The Science of Sound – Kundalini yoga heal and inspire – 29 January 6.15-7.30pm Prana Lounge

brainThe Science of Sound

I spent a very special weekend hearing different sounds at the Galle Literary Festival. The words and vibrations of inspirational speakers, who used their voices to inspire, excite and uplift. This week we continue with our investigation into the yogic science of sound to make our words powerful, uplifting and inspirational.

The Science-We are the most amazing instrument. We discussed the power of sound to raise our vibration last week, as we played the instrument of our body and its 72,000 surs, string or meridian points. Why is mantra a quantum technology? It is quantum because sound manipulates the smallest particles in our bodies to effectively change the combinations and patterns within us. These patterns then form the informational DNA of your spirit. A sacred rope of knots to lift you to the divine.

These primal sounds we use in mantra are called Phonemes. The Shabd (sound) guru (teacher) uses these primal units of speech plus universal grammar under laying all language to change the psychoactive neurology of the brain. Repeating the pattern embedded in the Shabd guru ingrains that pattern of primal sound into the brain, this is the patterns of sound made at the beginning of time, the big bang so to speak. Enlightened Masters having experienced the sound current, have extracted these sounds from the Anahat (the unstruck or unmanifested sound current) and plucked these particular series of notes from behind the silence to give us a technology to heal the maladies of our time. You may ask why these particular notes and not all sounds. Because not all combinations of sounds create a pattern of wholeness and healing.

Why does it work?

Shabd means sound, but when you break the word down you get Sha, meaning the expression of ego and bd, to cut. Ego is formed by the minds constant automatic processing that attaches us to identify with objects, people, feelings, thoughts, etc. The Ego is not bad, just very limited.   When all your actions, thoughts, etc are attached to ego your reality becomes very narrow, and you live in the duality of pain and pleasure. When you transcend, the ego see it but are not taken by it, then you intuitively connect to the larger Self the vastness of what is and understand the play of life from this perspective.

Each primal sound is a unit that is pronounced by a particular part of the mouth. When we form a word to speak it, the tongue moves and touches the palate, the top of the mouth, and the teeth in a well-defined area. The sound of the word directs the pressure of the air and vibrates the vocal chords to stimulate specific areas in the skull. The primal sounds use these areas of reflex, attached to meridians, to direct brain patterns. That is why it is easier to meditate to Mantra, because it cuts through the ego of negative and positive thoughts to the truth of you and your neutral mind.  Having practiced chanting for around 16 years I can attest to the power of mantra. Try it and lets your normal day words come from a clear mind and inspire all those who hear you.  Sat nam Fi x read our weekly blogs,   0778011984

sound 12018 the Year of Sound

Having just been to the movies to watch Pitch Perfect I was inspired by how amazing music, singing and sound can lift you up and start really transforming you. In fact Mick Rock legendary 70’s rock and roll photographer and yogi said, “ You paid whatever you could afford for your mantra…I ‘ve used this mantra ever since. Very easy to use very powerful.” In later life he discovered Kundalini yoga. When asked why Kundalini? He said, “It totally works. It is not bullshit crap. It’s not theoretical. You don’t have to start as a believer or be a follower of Yogi Bhajan to get the benefits. All I really know is the Kundalini kriyas, postures, meditation, chanting and breathing techniques enable me to easily access an altered state in a non chemical way. I just go into the Kundalini space. My brain, my being transforms.”

Practical Guide: So how does Sound & Mantra work

Thoughts and sounds are energetic waves we cannot see but exist. If you project a specific form of energy through the mind, it can have a predictable effect on the physiology of the body and psyche of the brain. This we call mantra. Mantra essentially is a sound wave that you pulse across the brain to create a specific effect within you. It is a bit like a mathematical formula. Each mantra creates a measurable end. It alters the chemistry and pattern of the neurons with both physical and esoteric effects. This has been measured in Harvard and UCLA when they researched how Kritan Kriya (SA,TA,NA,MA) affected DNA and regrowth of telomeres in patients with Alzheimer’s.

Every element of the universe is in a constant state of vibration manifested to us as light, sound and energy. The human sense perceives only a fraction of the infinite range of vibration, so it is difficult to comprehen that the Word mentioned in the bible is actually the totality of vibration which underlies and sustains all creation. A person can tune his or her own consciousness into the awareness of that totality with the use of a mantra. By vibrating in rhythm with the breath to a particular sound that is proportional to the creative sound, or sound current, one can expand one’s sensitivity to the entire spectrum of vibration. It is similar to striking a note on a stringed instrument. In other words, as you vibrate, the universe vibrates with you.” ~Yogi Bhajan

Chanting a mantra either silently or out loud is a method of directing the mind. All of our emotions (sorrow, joy, bitterness, elation) are vibratory frequencies. You can call them beliefs, attitudes, whatever you want, but fundamentally they are vibratory patterns that determine the program played by our mind. So much of what we interact with as “reality” is the program our mind is playing. Our vibratory pattern determines how we feel.

We chant constantly, even if we aren’t aware of it. Chanting can look like “I’m failure, I’m failure, I always fail so why bother trying”. If every other word out of our mouth is “I don’t have enough money for (fill in the blank)” then that, too, is the vibratory pattern we are sending across our minds. When we consciously chant a mantra we are invoking its specific vibratory resonance and placing it into our mind’s field. So if the mantra is for prosperity, peace, happiness, intuition or any multitude of other marvelous things that is the vibratory pattern we are establishing. It doesn’t actually matter if we know the meaning of the mantra; it will still have an effect. The sounds themselves are encoded with meaning and vibratory range. It’s not all about belief. Nor is it placebo. It’s a matter of the universe itself using certain frequencies to manifest things. Mantras were developed by those who could hear and understand the language of the universe. They then blossomed forth these combination of sounds to harness specific vibratory patterns and allow us to mirror them back to the universe in its own language of sound, light and energy.

When chanting it is important to listen to the sound of your own voice, no matter what the pitch or tone. It is not about harmonising. But try to make sure your voice does not dominate either. As the thoughts or emotions arise in meditation, chant strongly and consciously to match the frequency of the thought or emotion. The mantra can then dissolve or replace this pattern with a positive one.

Mantra is also great for people who find meditation difficult. Chanting mantra is a way of staying focused and positively cutting through negative mind loops and patterns. Great to use with Autistic children. Find a mantra that you feel the effect of and use it this year to be the truest, highest version of you. Sat nam Fi x read our weekly blogs,   0778011984

Kundalini yoga & Success at Work – 15 Jan 6.15-7.30pm Prana Lounge, Col 7

yoga at workLast week we looked at practical ways to maximise 2018 so we can thrive this year instead of just trying to survive. But how can we also bring our spiritual practice into our work environment? The working world and yogic principles might seem like strange companions but clarity of purpose, commitment to ethics and being authentic have driven some of the world’s most successful entrepreneurs from the Apple Empire of the late Steve Jobs to Richard Branson. We should not be surprised that the last book that Steve Jobs read was, The Autobiography of a Yogi, by Paramhansa Yogananda.

The movement now is of better business as a creator of value, not just wealth.  Profit being a by product of purpose, not the reason to get out of bed in the morning. Yogic thinking destroys the life limiting beliefs which can hold so many of us back whether in our professional or personal lives.   The practice of kundalini yoga and meditation gives us the clarity and focus which made those like Steve Jobs and Warren Buffett so successful. Yogic principles also help us navigate the ethical dilemmas that characterise the work environment, having to make money and employ others.

Practical Guide to Yogic Success at work

  • Be yourself. There is no sustainability in wearing a mask or trying to be like someone you admire. By focusing on your strengths and abilities you will find your niche.
  • Once you understand your niche exploit it, be the best you that you can be. Oprah Winfrey said she never competed with anyone. She was told just be yourself she.
  • Being a former lawyer, I love a little critical thinking and I find writing easy, therefore not only do I teach yoga and I have decided to be a teacher trainer but it suites me to understand yoga on a mental level as well as a spiritual level one and I work this out by researching and writing my blog.
  • Self care – it is important for your mental health to build a life outside work. This could mean developing a yogic practice, social life with friends, hobbies. Headspace to breathe other air is good. This helps you keep a perspective at work.
  • Planning – make a plan but leave room for the magic of connections, collaboration and creativity to come into your work.
  • Do what you need to but have unshakable faith and confidence that what you need will come to you when you need it.

The Year 2018 = 11 – Kundalini yoga in Sri Lanka

Happy 2018 dear ones. I have been on holiday spending quality time with my family this Christmas season but will see you all back in class after 7th January 2018.  I just wanted to share our amazing teacher Shiv Charan Singh’s message for 2018 with you all. Happy, healthy, holy to you and all your families. Remember what ever we need to face we are always equal to our challenges. Sat nam Fiona

THE YEAR 2018: (Note: this is not a predictive text. Just some guidelines for those to whom it means something)
Every year we appreciate renewal of the year as a chance to give our life a new focus, or a refocus, checking the direction, and sowing new seeds. Each one has their own way to do that. and sometimes we can appreciate and benefit from a suggestion. Here is just a suggestion guided by the intelligence inherent in numbers
The first change from 2017 to 2018 is that the 7 becomes 8. This unit number is in the place of the Hidden treasure or hidden demon (virtue or virus). The seed within the seed. The gift within the gift. The poison within the gift, or the gift within the poison.   8 suggests power and energy, abundance or abuse, economy, compassion or fatality, sympathy – empathy – antipathy, authority, healing, life and death, purity and the pranic body.  8 is the number of infinity, beyond time, which also means beyond time and space. We are all linked in timelessness, but it is a dreamy state that we mostly are ignorant of. Pausing our busy life to contemplate our shared infinite link moves us into compassion through which healing happens. Taking time in nature helps a lot.
The impact of this change then changes 17 to 18. The sum of the last 2 digits of the year represents the overall potential/ seed/sutra = 18 = 9:  Tolerance or tyranny. Patience or frustration. Peace or extreme restlessness. Direction or dispersion.  9 is the number of subtlety. The subtlety that sabotages us when we ignore it.  Peace is subtle, which is why it often eludes us even after years of peace talks. Before walking in the world to bring peace. We first need to walk peace into our selves. Walking in consciousness of nothing but the act of walking is recommended. Also practice sitting in peace. Sitting in a way that the subtlety of peace can settle within.  9, in relation to the total of 2018 = 11, leads to the mystery of expand to contract and contract to expand. If we don’t recycle then we cannot renew; we will simply run out. Fragment to unite.

The next level of impact is that 2017 becomes 2018. This sums up to 11.  The sum of the full/whole year implies the future, the shared human destiny, the possibilities and opportunities. Not only the flowering of humanity but also the fragility, the trauma, the pain and the paralysis of that unfolding being cut short, thwarted.
11: The highest possibility of the 11 will only be known if we do not reduce the 11 to become 2.   The number 11 is 10 and 1. Intimacy, likeness and unison between the Macro-Unity, 10, and the micro-unit, 1. In religious language that is ‘God and me, me and God, are One. Otherwise it is 1 + 1 = 2, and that is duality, separation and splits in our life.
11 is the relation between the Universal Spirit Radiant Body, 10, and the Individual Soul, 1. Combining ‘Royal Courage’ and humility.  In 11 we find reflections of the soul – richness of wisdom through alignment. In 2 we suffer the poverty of separation, despair and naivety.
11 = I am, you are, we are, we are 1. Beyond temporary bonds and attachments to rediscover the eternal and infinite connection.  11 is the mirror effect of the universal spirit.  It is consciousness being conscious of itself through the individually embodied consciousness.
The 1 (in 11) is the indication of new beginnings, while the 10 indicates a complete closure of what was. In 2018 certain things will unarguably be over and the seeds of new possibilities will emerge.
2018 is a year for breaking the unwanted and karmic ties, the chains , the bonds. And renewing your bond with the Infinite, the Eternal, the Unchanging. Bound to the One within your heart you will be free of everything else. From that state you will discover how the unlikely path becomes the only path.  A year to fully and totally offer your self to your higher consciousness. A year to fully receive the offering, not just of life itself, but also the offering of the teachings that guides us through the Maya of time and space towards the realisation of the unison between the micro self and the macro self. The offering of the teachings is called GurPrasaad; the Guru’s Grace or benevolence.  In other words 11 is the inner knowing of, and identity with, the One that gives you all you are.
Establish the micro ‘i am’. Return to the place you come from – within your self. Come back. Come back to the One. And the Great Macro ‘I Am’ will come to your side.  Become small to know the All. ‘I know nothing, yet I am’; this is existing in the non-existence; it is a zero-point.
11 – the individualised conscious soul, will always relate to the Universal Spirit of Oneness: Listening and attuning to the will of the One. Reflecting upon, and stepping into, the pervasive light of the One. Living in, and with, the consciousness of the One. Remembering and walking in the company of the One. The simple act of bringing the palms together in front of the heart invites the innate potential of the 11 to actualise itself.
11 invites Harmonious Alignment in Conscious Action. Alignment of parts of our own personal life; between heart and mind; between our thoughts, words and deeds; between the higher self and the inner soul. Alignment between women and men, parent and child. Alignment between the community [outer self] and the individual [inner self]. Harmonious Alignment between communities of all types of diversity.  It is an inviting chance to tune your soul in with the Cosmos, to restate your identity and come together with others in celebration. Ultimately alignment will bring a sense of solidarity with all beings.
’All my life I prepared for one thing; the day I meet God, I will meet as His part and parcel never an
individual. Therefore never meet any human as a individual to individual, meet always as a part of
parcel of that person as you are one. Because there is one God and every creation of that one God is
one, learn the art to be one.
And remember, one and one makes eleven, never two. Your force will increase eleven fold, if you
talk to somebody as one to one, within the one of that person,…. you can share the whole world and
dare to love all in one and one in all. One and one is eleven, when you talk as one with another
person, you power will increase eleven fold.’’  Yogi Bhajan July 27. 1995   v
