Detox & Cleanse before Avurdu – 6.15-7.30pm Kundalini yoga@ Prana Lounge, Col 7

We detoxify continuously throughout life. We process food, thoughts, and all forms of energy. The trouble is that we accumulate more than we process. On a physical form if our body is not eliminating all our metabolic waste we become highly acidic, which compromises our health. We can also become weighed down under the remnants of old emotions and thought patterns. When we want to cleanse and clean ourselves out on a deep level, we go on a fast and do detoxification kriyas and pranayamas.

So how do you know if you need to detox? If you live in a city, eat processed food and do not regularly exercise and meditate the chances are you need to detox at least once a year. Here are other signs to look for:

  • Feeling tired all the time, fatigue
  • Dark cycles under your eyes
  • Cysts, fibrosis, kidney stones or clots
  • Eczema, acne, headaches, joint pain
  • Bad breath, foul smelling stools and perspiration
  • Constipation (for women is defined if we do not pass a stool within 18 hours of eating and men 24 hrs)
  • Yellow skin, purple lips, coated tongue
  • Yellow or brown in the whites of the eyes
  • Gout

How can a cleansing diet, detox Kriyas and Pranayama help? When the body does not get the level of calories it is use to per day, it goes into detoxifying mode. The aerobic detox kriyas and breath of fire increases circulation and your metabolic rate thereby stimulating the exit of toxins. Ayurveda and Kundalini yoga does not advocate water fasts, as the drastic lack of food makes the body think it is starving and the body attempts to preserve resources which is the opposite of the detoxification and elimination process.

Practical  A detox is a powerful tool for healing, strengthening the body and restoring vitality as we grow older. However, before doing a detox you need to check with your doctor or naturopath, especially if you are on meditation. Sticking to detox is only half the challenge. Physical detoxification is accompanied by emotional and mental cleansing. Anger and negative thought patterns can be released especially if you use food to numb yourself. Use your meditative mind and meditation practice to help you watch your mind and emotions.

My detox day

My program was as follows:

  1. Wake up mindfully becoming conscious of the moment and my mood.

  4. Sipping plenty of alkaline water (ie over ph7) throughout the day.
  5. Followed by a Tbsp. of virgin, organic coconut oil and acidophilus based mango, strawberry smoothie.
  6. I notice immediately how quick I felt angry today and allowed myself to feel the emotion and attempted not get taken away by it.

  8. 2 full glasses of green smoothie, a mixture of king coconut water, organic kale, parsley, moringa powder, cucumber, green apple, green banana, ½ avocado, ½ an orange. I chewed my smoothie to get the most nutrients out of it.
  9. Getting on with my day and work, feeling super energetic.
  10. Tea time drink of freshly ground turmeric, lemon juice and 1 teaspoon of manuka honey.

Pranayama – Breath of Fire purifies and detoxes your blood & increases your vital energy. Detoxification Kriya – Vatskar Dhouti Kriya to master the digestive system: This is a very secret kundalini yoga kriya that has been used for centuries. It must be done on an empty stomach and it great to get the bowl moving in the mornings.

Sit in any comfortable posture. Make your lips round in an “O” shape. Start inhaling through your mouth as if you are sipping in air. Sip until your stomach is full and hold the breath. Now rotate and churn your belly with your breath held in until you need to exhale. Exhale through your nose in a steady stream. Only repeat this process a maximum of 3 times in total. It is prohibited to do this more times in a day. Do this for 40 days without missing a day to heal your digestive system.

detox yogaHow can Fasting and detox Kriyas and Pranayama help?

When the body does not get the level of calories it is use to per day, it goes into detoxifying mode. The aerobic detox kriyas and breath of fire increases circulation and your metabolic rate thereby stimulating the exit of toxins. Ayurveda and Kundalini yoga does not advocate water fasts, as the drastic lack of food makes the body think it is starving and the body attempts to preserve resources which is the opposite of the detoxification and elimination process.

Practical

Fasting is a powerful tool for healing, strengthening the body and restoring vitality as we grow older. However, before going on a fast you need to check with your doctor or naturopath, especially if you are on meditation. The mono diet fast given below is generally safe for anyone, but please check first.

Preparation for fasting:

The week before fasting, start eliminating junk or fast food. Eat lighter meals, composed of mainly veggies and fruits. Eliminate alcohol, meats, fish, eggs, sugar, refined carbohydrates like bread, biscuits, cakes etc. and caffeine. Then try replacing one meal per day with say Melon. When your body feels comfortable on a lighter diet then you can try a 1 day fast on watermelon, plenty of fresh water and king coconut water.

Sticking to the mono food fast is only half the challenge. Physical detoxification is accompanied by emotional and mental cleansing. Anger and negative thought patterns can be released especially if you use food to numb yourself. Use your meditative mind and meditation practice to help you watch your mind and emotions.

Breaking the fast

Fasting makes the body very sensitive. So break your fast slowly. If you do the 3-day melon fast and break it with a pizza you are going to feel very sick. The day after the fast, start by introducing veggies and other fruits. Next day add grains, pulses and the next day add diary. After a cleanse it is difficult to go back to junk food.

Watermelon Fast for detoxification of the kidneys and antioxidant

Eat only watermelon (organic if possible) for 1 to 3 days. Eat as much as desired. Drink plenty of water and king coconut water. Take it easy.

Pranayama – Breath of Fire purifies and detoxes your blood & increases your vital energy. Sit in any comfortable pose where you can breathe consciously. As you exhale pull in your navel as your diaphragm goes in an up. For the inhale, simply relax your stomach muscles and your lungs will naturally refill with air. Focus on the exhale but the inhale and exhale are of equal length. Make the breath rhythmic. It does not have to be fast as first. You may feel dizzy when you first start practicing this breath but it will get easier as your body starts to detox. Do it for 1-3 mins daily before, during and after your fast.

Detoxification Kriya – Vatskar Dhouti Kriya to master the digestive system: This is a very secret kundalini yoga kriya that has been used for centuries. It must be done on an empty stomach and it great to get the bowl moving in the mornings.

There is a way through every block – Dissolve them

yogavibes-kundalini-yoga-online

Dissolve the Blocks in your life

We do not realise it but we actually block ourselves. We get entangled in our emotional wants and needs which fail to serve our real heart’s desire for connection with our infinite self.

Yogi Bhajan explains: “We have forgotten one thing. We have not come on this Earth to have a religion, not at all. We have not come here to do a business. These are all tools to achieve one thing-which is a basic human instinct—that this finite wants to merge in Infinity. We want to have not this, not that, but we want to have everything; we want to feel everything, we want to know everything, we want to merge in everything, and we want everything to merge in us. When you stop trying this, you destroy yourself. It destroys your mechanism because then you act against your own nature to seek Infinity.”

Sometimes we do not recognize that our finite experience in the human body is in part to create a polarity so we can experience the Infinite. The finite and the Infinite are like two hands which are there to both serve our heart. We feel the desire to expand and touch that infinite nature.

We may express this as a desire for:

  • Power
  • Status
  • Money
  • Looking physically good or fashionable

But when we settle for these finite goals, instead of understanding that these things are an expression of our infinite nature not our hearts desire, we get stuck. As Yogi Bhajan put it, we settle for a single peanut butter sandwich instead of the ongoing feast of plenty that will continue for all our lives.

In order to elevate ourselves as human beings and to stay on the path of our spirit, there are simple tools that can help us. They give us the clarity, courage and consciousness we need. This meditation is one of those tools.

The practice of this meditation, even briefly, locates you in your heart, opens your perception, and lets you immediately recognize the way forward. All the blocks that seemed absolute dissolve. When darkness and struggle seem to surround you, a ray of light finds its way in and it is even easier to see through the darkness. This is a state of ordinary miracles. This is a steady state of gratitude to see the constant flow of miracles that accompany you on your path. That is Dharma!

EVERY-BLOCK

2nd Sutra Meditation: Mandhavani Kriya

“When your work doesn’t proceed, you get blocked, if you chant this mantra, then not only it will start it will start like Infinity.” -Yogi Bhajan 4/11/77

Posture: Sit in a comfortable cross-legged position with a straight spine.

Mudra: Bring the hands in front of the throat, forearms parallel to the ground. The left hand is palm down; the palm is flat and the fingers point to the right. Extend the left thumb toward the throat. Bring the right thumb between the left thumb and index finger, placing it in the center of the left palm and allow the fingers of the right hand to rest on the back of the left hand. Lock the right thumb in place and apply firm pressure on the left palm. Hold the position at the level of the throat about six inches in front of the body.

Eyes: Closed

Mantra: ad Asch, Jugaad Sach, Hai Bhay Sach, Naanak Hosee Bhay Sach

Breath: Inhale deeply and completely exhale as the mantra is chanted in a monotone.  Inhale and continue. This mantra is from the 17th Ashtapadi of Sukhmani Sahib

Time: 31 minutes.

Comments:

Be sure to keep the arms parallel to the ground. The key to this meditation is locking the right thumb and keeping firm pressure on the center of the left hand. Your thumb may become sore after a while but be strong and don’t give an inch.

Comments by Gurucharan Singh: Let each sound resonate through your whole being like a pebble across the calmest of ponds. And in that complex matrix of ripples you are still personally present and feel your vastness in equal proportion to your specific finiteness. You are in this body—at this time—timelessly and fully engaged. When you listen from the doorway between the finite and Infinite, the mantra you recite becomes the shabad—a sound that dissolves the ego as it invites the Infinite through the heart that you embody. As Yogi Bhajan instructed us:

“This is a Shabad. If you can perfect that Shabad—perfect means when you can recite it correctly at any time without any hindrance while reciting, this is the perfection of the Shabad. While reciting you can hear it accurately. You hear it within yourself, not anybody else. That means it is perfected. Then whenever you will perform it the master miracle will happen.”

Why Detox?

Healthy saladsSo why bother to detoxify the body and where do toxins come from?

In fact our body regularly eliminates many pounds of toxins daily through our bowels.  Our bowels are the human body’s sewage system.  The toxins come from inhaling dust, car pollution, chemical sprays from our household cleaners, undigested processed acid forming foods (please see alkaline foods below) ingested heavy metals and pesticides in our food.  A large amount of toxins come from dead cells from our own body.  By taking time to re-evaluate what we consume from the food we eat to the entertainment we watch, we can increase our wellness, feel energised, calm and alive.
