brain yogaSat nam, feeling very happy to be back teaching in Sri Lanka and looking forward to our Level 2 and Level 1 Teacher Training coming up.

Increasingly I have been reading about how as a society we wish to increase our executive brain function.  But first of all, what is executive brain function and how can Kundalini yoga help us increase this cognitive feature in our brain?

Executive function is an umbrella term for cognitive processes that regulate, control, and manage brain processes, such as planning, working memory, attention, problem solving, verbal reasoning, inhibition, mental flexibility, task switching, initiation, monitoring etc.

Executive brain function is seen as important because it helps us gets things done, quickly effectively, efficiently, multi task and juggle different types of thinking. I.e. the more we can focus, plan and practice the better our brain works for us.

The area of the brain that controls executive function is the frontal lobe.  With age the area of grey matter which includes the front lobe decreases. With regular practice of Kundalini yoga and meditation we can not only increase the grey matter of the brain but also work on being able to go past the mind saying, I can’t and the body saying I do not want to. Giving yourself the ultimate freedom to make decisions not based on a reactive mind.  Try it out for yourself as we do a set of meditations this week and conduct your own study of your brain.

Balancing the Gunas

The yogis call the time prior to the big Bang the Unmanifested consciousness and after the Big Bang when matter and polarity is created, the separation between the Unmanifested and Manifest Shiva (creator) and Shakti (the destroyer).

Matter (Prakirti) is composed of 3 aspects or in Sanskrit Gunas. Gunas cannot be destroyed but the dominance of Gunas can be changed to change our perception of life.

I am going to relate the 3 gunas to the flavours of food. The flavor of a fresh raw apple, in its pure essence we could relate to the sattva guna.

When we add some spices and sugar to the apple it changes its true state to something different, something warming, expanding our taste buds, we have created something new and exciting out of the original pure taste of apple, a flavor of rajas guna.

If we get that same apple and ferment it, a process of deterioration into its sugary and finally alcoholic parts to make cider. When we drink cider it makes us slow, our limbs feel heavy, we feel attached to our opinions, too much may make us feel angry or confused, this is the tamas guna.

So why it this important? Well our thoughts, feeling and actions come from how we perceive life and the how we see life comes from the predominant guna influencing us at that moment

For example if you are feeling depressed, your mind and body are being dominated by tamas. If you are feeling angry again this is the tamas domination of your gunas. At present both these states of being are seen as the status quo in our society. More and more people are suffering from mood disorders, which are only made worse by taking drugs or alcohol which only increase the tamas quality of the mind. Directing your anger on twitter or social media without thought of how the communication will impact on another person, comes from the tamas guna. Yogi Ji reminds us that tamas gunas dominance is not the norm for a human being, in fact we are sattvic by nature or angelic. But this is going to depend on your lifestyle and how well your mind is disciplined

He gave us the gutka shabad to stop the mind when it gets insane. He said to chant a minimum of 5 times

“Ek Ong Kaar, Sat Gurprasaad. Sat Gurprasaad, Ek Ong Kaar.

It will stop the negativity of the mind and put it in reverse, it is a mantra that will reverse the downward spiral of the thoughts. Chant it with reverence as it is really powerful and then make sure your words and thoughts are positive. Attraction – Kundalini Yoga and relationships

If we think that a romantic relationship will complete us, make up for our lack of self esteem or make us happy we are wrong. Dr Hair Simian says.

It is in the nature of an intimate relationship to reveal some of our deepest attachments and neuroses. Without a consistent way to dissolve the patterns of the subconscious, the patterns of the subconscious will dissolve the relationship. Our fear, limitations, and attachments define the limits of our tolerance. Tolerance is the foundation of a relationship. If you are looking for a perfect and ideal person to relate to, there isn’t one. If you’re going to reject your partner due to his or her faults or misguided concepts, you might as well leave now and save time. If you live for each other and encourage your partner to grow, develop, and expand in tolerance, you will be happy in that relationship. Growing and changing together develops the depth of a relationship. Share your growth.

If you ask your partner to complete you, you will be completely unhappy. We are by nature whole, complete, happy humans with a spiritual identity. If our identity relies on our relationship, the fluctuations of that relationship will bring you with it. If instead you rely on developing your relationship with yourself and your soul then you will remain steady.

 

Qualities to think about in a relationship:

  • Am I attracted to that person’s consciousness and spirit?
  • Do we share common ground on our, vibratory compatibility, similar vision regarding children, etc?
  • As conscious humans we are tolerant and grow in tolerance towards our partners.
  • If you want a relationship so you can get sometime out of your partner you will not be content. If your focus is on giving to the Universe, the Universe will serve you. When giving is your intention, you will be deeply satisfied in your relationship.
  • We all want a warm and cozy home. When the home has a cozy, warm, and graceful environment, the relationship has a warm nest to grow in. When the home is chaotic and disruptive, then division and isolation can happen between the partners. When there is freshly cooked food and the house smells good, it is difficult to argue. Happiness can be attained at home.
  • We must nurture our relationships by making time for each other. Withholding love and an attitude of scarcity will constrict and restrict the love between two people. If you don’t have time to hold your beloved, then it is time to adjust your schedule.

Sex starts at the third eye or 6th chakra with intention and perception. The balance of your nervous system and glandular system is important.

Dr Hari Simran says: The parasympathetic nervous system controls the rest and relaxing functions of the body and is necessary to access for arousal. If there is any fear or stress in the relationship or individual insecurity, then sexual arousal is blocked. In Kundalini Yoga therapy we recommend long deep breathing through the left nostril, Kirtan Kriya, and gong meditation to help access the ability to relax. To achieve a full orgasm requires accessing the sympathetic nervous system. This requires a degree of sexual tension, attraction, and passion. If couples “take each other for granted,” the passion begins to be elusive. In Kundalini Yoga therapy, we suggest that couples chant together, participate in White Tantric Yoga®, and do yoga that stimulates the sympathetic flow.

Reactive Personality ie Hidden Self

Over the last few weeks we have been looking at how we can be truly happy, to feel good about ourselves, be able to cope with difficult feelings and circumstances. But the biggest obstacle to all of this is what Yogi Bhajan named as the Reactive personality or Hidden self.

Firstly we need to understand that we originate from the soul which does not include any polarity, just oneness, which reflects true self. We incarnate into a Universe of polarities, where our persona and shadow self exist. Persona is the part of our personality which we project into the world, how we would like to be seen. The Shadow is the part of the personality which we keep hidden. For example if you are a very kind, generous person there is within you a selfish and mean side. In order not to be at odds with your Shadow you need to acknowledge both sides of the persona but choose to be kind and generous to yourself and others. Understanding that sometimes you need to put yourself first and look after your financial needs. Then there is no conflict between the persona and the shadow.

Within the Shadow lies the Hidden or reactive self. This part of us is created through experiences we had usually in the first 7 years of our life. Just like the little angle baby becomes a monster during the terrible twos, this reactive self does not die with childhood. It stays in the subconscious realm as we get older, holding on to its hidden agenda, undermining our ability to appreciate life, be happy and fulfilled. The reactive self is activated when we do not get what we want. In these circumstances we become angry but it is not just feelings of anger but the reactive mind gets involved, saying, why am I angry, I feel bad about being angry, etc. Adding layer upon layer to this initial feeling from the hidden self.

How to recognise the Reactive or Hidden Self ?

  1. Feelings of regret about the past, past mistakes, etc.
  2. When you begin defending yourself because feelings of shame, loss and fear arise. It prevents us from acknowledging our accountability for what happens to us in life. If it is happening to you, it is happening through you.
  3. We may be busy, our lives filled with many people, tasks and adventures but inside we are not content.
  4. The interconnection between the left and right hemisphere is weakened. The effect is often a change in voice and tone. We are angry, childlike, talkative, full of stories, sneaky and insecure.
  5. Feeling sorry for ourselves, life is unfair, living in our stories.
  6. . Because we are not neutral about ourselves we dismiss the hidden self and its agendas and do not believe the outside world is affected by our private thoughts and feelings. The ego and subconscious mind align with the hidden self. This now reactive personality based on unprocessed childhood trauma, creates thousands of thoughts, feelings and narratives to serve our hidden agenda. We react in the same way to all situations, which may not make sense in the current moment. The gap between us and reality increases.   If our habit is to simple react, or to react and deny we reacted we divide and fight ourselves. It is just like trying to see ourselves in a shattered mirror.

These are just some of the signs of the Reactive personality. When they occur the hidden personality is dominating our normal personality

So how do we deal with it?

Shiv Charan our teacher is very clear about this, he says when you observe the Hidden self, you have got to be very very firm.

  1. There is nothing to heal.
  2. Do not mentally react to it or start to analysis it or discuss it.
  3. Hit it with a Mantra. Mantra is like a tread, a diver’s life line, keep chanting, keep the rhythm and you will get through the waves of it until you come out on the other side.
  4. Have a tool box you can use when the Reactive Self arises, Inhale 4 exhale 1.
  5. For most people we will never be able to get rid of the hidden self reactive personality, only put it to sleep.

Emotional Intelligence – Kundalini Yoga 6.45pmWed 25 July @ 9 Greenlands Lane

Our happiness will not be complete until we understand our emotions and what they are trying to tell us. We feel that emotions drain us and if we could live without negative emotions, we would be happier.

GuruMeher has made a study of our emotions, he calls them the Senses of the Soul. He says “We do two things wrong with emotions we either let them take over us or we repress them.”   Students and yoga teachers alike have been asking me about how to deal with difficult emotions and I feel that especially the spiritual community tries to bypass difficult emotions. In fact I had a friend who did 3 to 4 kriyas and meditations per day to try and kriya her way out of feelings dark emotions. You may feel better initially but these emotions only get stronger if denied or vilified.

GuruMeher talks about emotions being the immune system of our mental health, therefore when we have an emotion use the clarity of our mind to try and understand what that emotion is trying to tell us.

Practical Solutions

So how do we do this? If an emotion is bothering you bring it into your consciousness awareness. Especially when you meditate. So next time you meditate bring in the emotion and listen to it what is it trying to tell you. Your emotions do not talk like your brain.   Start observing yourself not just your thoughts but listen with your self sensory system to feel the answer.

If you are in a meditative or neutral mind state when you bring up a difficult emotion your pre frontal cortex lights up and you feel clear, in normal situations your limbic system takes over and you go cloudy and unconscious. For example, feel the shame and after a while the shame will not feel so bad, as long as you are not feeding it with your thoughts. You need to feel this on a somatic (physical)level. Ask yourself, what do I need to do to feel better? This is the future of therapy ,it is self therapy. You will find yourself through it. It is a simple formula, you know what you are feeling and know what to do to feel better.

Guru Singh tells us “When you walk into any room, make it your home. Then help everyone in the room to feel at home. Remember, you are uniquely you and you have every right to be exactly that. Do not try to fit in, you fit perfectly in you.”This is you making everyone else in the room feel at home. It is the very reason why sacred disciplines are essential. Yoga and meditation to reconstruct our random inclinations to follow the crowd instead of having the courage to move towards our dream and goals. Not just your parents and societies.

Practical Solutions

Essentially I think the key to understanding your uniqueness is to take a beautiful journey to learn who you really are. What your dreams are, your talents, your weaknesses, your gifts and your challenges. We are so obsessed about learning about others, the latest movie star, our partners, discovering everything new about our children or new friendships, but how often do we really decide to deeply learn about ourselves? Not in a narcissist way, but in a profound, curious and amazed way?

What is the difference between your external reality (i.e. personality) and the inner you, the spirit within? Because each of us has more than just a personality. Each of us has an energy signature like a thumb print which makes us Unique, one in finity in this incarnation. I just feel special even thinking about it. But we must remember that this applies to all people not just ourselves. So I invite you in the next few weeks, to take time out each day, whether it is through kundalini or yoga meditation practice, reiki, healing, being around the light energy of children, communing with nature in the waves or mountains to become a curious and courageous traveler of your inner journey. Let the Mind Serve You – Kundalini Yoga 6.15pm Mon 26 March 2018

By thinking and thinking nothing happens! Train the mind to find the solution.

Letting go is one of the powerful ways we can learn to make our mind work for us and start to develop a real understanding and control of our mind. But the big one is when we are confronted by a real challenge in the moment. When this happens, can you stop your mind from blaming, feeling shame, thinking how it should have been, would have been, why me, I cannot cope, etc? This is the real test and it is one of the reasons we need challenge in our life to help us refine our mental reactions.

Yogi Bhajan tell us this, “If we can master the use and command of the mind, we can enjoy this world and live truthfully, gracefully and prosperously.”

The challenge is that often times we feel that the mind is beyond our reach and impact. The mind acts so fast we do not have the habit or chance to stop it reacting. This is why we need to make a clear relationship with the mind. i.e. realise my thoughts and/ or feelings are not me. My mind is under me so I do not need to react to it. Instead I assess the information the mind gives to me with my 3 functional minds and decide what action to take, based on what is the highest outcome or good in any given situation.

Practical Solutions –Here are some triggers for you to know your mind is reacting and you are under the mind:

  • Whenever you are subject to the mind you act and become inferior. You communicate to receive sympathy. You may say, “Why is this happening to me? I cannot help my feelings. I acting out of fear”.
  • Also when your negative mind says something to you, immediately it should be accompanied by the positive mind saying the polar opposite which is both assessed by the neutral mind. When this is not happening you know you are stuck in a mind loop.
  • Procrastination, thinking, talking, writing lists but not getting on and doing what is needed.
  • Resistance to what is occurring in the moment. Things not going the way you expect or want.

Yogi Bhajan gives us a really easy solution once we notice we are being triggered into reaction. If you can switch your dominant nostril breathing to the left, your mind will serve you. He says that the moment you start breathing through your left nostril your elementary self comes into to play and the totality of your mind becomes one, then the radiance will increase in your electromagnetic field and you will become very pleasant, positive instead of angry and reactive. Meditation to control your breathing and mind

Posture:Sit in Easy Pose with a straight spine.

Breath: Close off your right nostril with your right thumb and inhale deeply through your left nostril. Exhale completely through your mouth.

Time: Continue for 6 minutes.

To End: Inhale deeply, interlace your fingers and stretch them over your head palms up. Hold your breath for 10-15 seconds while you stretch your spine upward. Exhale and relax.

Letting Go to Gain Everything

Loosening your grip does not mean you lose, it eventually makes you win because you are invested without attachment to the outcome.   You do the work, take the risk but without expectation. Holding on leaves little room for new creation to blossom as we create energetic boundaries that say, “No I expect this, I want that, No thank you!” The hard part is to act without expectation of gain, to do with intention, pure intention without the need to try and manipulate ensure your expectation is met. This is the real yoga. Because eventually we have to complete all our life lessons and then let go of everything the illusion of our five senses has created, this is called Death. But life without conscious living is no life at all, it is all sweat, toll, and worry without the feelings of limitless liberation in this lifetime.   As the bounds of attachment keep us glued to external validation.

 

The earth element is linked with our attachment. When we practice the one minute breath and master the one minute breath it can really give us a sense of liberation, effortless non attachment, having the experience for itself. I had this experience a few times practicing this breath and it was life altering for me. It left me with a touch stone to go back to when life becomes very heavy, when gravity outweighs gratitude.

Practical Solutions – I found his great practical exercise on www.3ho.org website. It can really help those obsessive thoughts especially related to emotions of anger, outrage and shame. Example: Release of suffering that originates with attachment from the activity of the intellectual mind and reactive emotions.

  1. Old habit: If someone insulted you, your intellectual mind understood it and your body responded to the stress. You used to allow your mind to repeat that incident over and over, stressing your body over and over. Although sometimes repeated with different outcomes, no matter how you ran or re-ran the event in your mind and body, neither were satisfied. Repeated self-induced stress equaled suffering.
  2. New habit: If someone insults you, you recall that the definition of a yogi/yogini is someone who is not attached or reactive to either praise or insult. You then recall the profound sensory experiences that you have created earlier through your practice. Recall your sensory experience of being transported into deep tranquility by meditating on the sacred mantra sounds. Recall your sensory experience of total relaxation. Recall your sensory experience of brilliant healing light radiating from your heart. As you drop your old habit of attachment, your suffering ends. Mental Intrigues, the Positive Mind and Kundalini yoga

The Positive MIND and its intrigues

This week we move on to the Positive mind, the second in the three functional minds. Why do we need to know our mind, explore it and understand it?   In my experience if we do not, it becomes a monster, especially if we become locked into our mental intrigues. Yogi Bhajan reminds us, “Your mind must not intrigue you …your mind must serve you.”

Let me define the Positive mind. The Positive mind is expansive and practical. It searches for pleasure & fulfilment. It is constructive, risk taking and active. It examines every thought and feeling to determine what resources are needed. It asks, “How is this useful to me, how can this help?”

When we attach to a mental intrigue, it can make us emotional and commotional. For example suppose you start to talk about somebody, gossip. The mind may encourage you, by bringing up all the bad things that person has ever done. The negative mind does not give a critical comparison, to the good things that person has done. The neutral mind does not tell you how this person confronting you, annoying you, etc. relates to your higher purpose of teaching tolerance & compassion. When we finish gossiping our mind says you were really bad, the words leave a bad taste in your mouth, it creates guilt. You followed your mind, got caught in an impulse and tangled in an intrigue. You start to feel bad you want to defeat yourself, so you pick up every bad habit that confirms you are a failure.  Sounds familiar?

So how do we stop getting tangled by our intrigues, where the negative mind and positive mind lock and loop? We need to watch the mind and practice deep meditation to develop our neutral mind. Your mind must give you the positive and negative then show you your relationship to it all through the neutral mind.

Yogi Bhajan also invited us to develop our presence and an unlimited projection Saibhang, self illuminated, radiant identity of your spirit. Stretch your mind to infinity; abandon your cleverness for innocence, then everyone and everything will sense your presence.   Do not confront or fight the mind, always elevate its vibration. With consistent practice it will get easier.

Laws of Attractiveness – Kundalini Yoga in Sri Lanka

Now we have started feeling deep acceptance of our polarities and paradoxes let’s get into the nitty, gritty of intimate relationships. Yogi Bhajan says this type of relationship is the highest kind of yoga because it pits you against conflict, paradox, polarity, challenge and asks you to call upon your conscious power over your mind to stay graceful, tolerant, compassionate and loving. Sound familiar?

But let’s look at what we are attracted to and how we become truly attractive?

We all have our theories about attraction – from fashion to passion, finding our soul mate to the need to fill our emotional holes. Are we attracted to people similar to ourselves or different? Is it their laugh or eye colour? Does Prince charming really exist?

The most powerful factor of attraction is none of the above. What we all find truly attractive is security. If a person exhibits a quality of self-love they are at their most attractive. It is typically when a person after a break up is feeling really good about themselves and is not looking for a relationship, that is when they attract someone. This sense of completeness and autonomy in yoga is call Saibhung.   We always will feel the need for someone to complete us this is the polarity of separation that the soul feels as it has been separated from the infinite. We need to use our applied intelligence to go beyond this polarity and feel whole, self fulfilled, self contained to serve in our intimate relationships instead of looking for our needs to be fulfilled by someone else.

Attraction is further complicated by the factors built into our instinctual programming, for example, take smell and symmetry. Smell is a powerful attractive factor. We immediately subconsciously recognise the smell of a potential mate that has genes which would be compatible to our having disease free, strong children.

Symmetry is another common attraction. We seek beauty and beauty is universally recognized as symmetry this factor also exists in the natural world.

The saying goes opposites attract. But we also like to share similarities in our partners. However we need enough of a difference to keep our relationship interesting. Differences create challenge, but if you do not try and fix your partner to make them like you, then you can face these polarities, stay conscious and remain flexible in your approach which lends to a healthy relationship.

So attraction is a complex blend of glandular, cerebral, social, genetic, karmic and spiritual. The only way to enjoy this and act with clarity is with applied intelligence where we use our consciousness and intuition to build and fulfil authentic relationships that are pleasing to our soul and its values.

The most important thing is not to be going into an intimate relationship with an itinerary of needs that have to be fulfilled by the other person. When people feel this insecurity it is very unattractive.

The best way to approach any relationship is when you are pre-fulfilled. You have everything you need. Begin with Oneness. This feeling of Saibhang can be developed through your daily practice of Kundalini yoga and meditation.
