Kundalini Yoga Teacher Training Level 1 Café Ceylon, Sri Lanka

About the Venue?

Café Ceylon and Jasmin cottage are our beautiful beach cottage and wild sea food restaurant by Kabalana Beach. Jasmin cottage is homely, cosy and colourful. Beds are covered with Indian kanta work, brightly coloured bedspreads and lots of art adorn the walls. Café Ceylon has a huge, tropical garden full of ancient coconut palms, organic papaya, passion, bananas and flowers. We slept between the 2 cottages, had our classes looking out on to the luscious garden and ate special veggie food cooked by my master chef husband German Dimaano. After an intense day of classes, we went off to Kabalana beach and got thrown about in the dramatic waves. Some of us went body boarding but it was an intense experience for all as we faced our fears and did it anyway. The star lit night was filled with the sweet sound of singing and playing of spiritual mantras, before an early night for a 5am start.

About the Retreat?

We began the final week of Kundalini Yoga Teacher Training Level 1 with our joyful teacher Ronit Vardi who flew to us from Israel just for this course. It was a 7 day intensive. With 5am starts for morning Sadhana, then full 13-14 hour days, filled with teachings that included, the science of Chakras, humanology, the relationship and differences between male and females, Yogic diet, ethics, spiritual path and development, western anatomy, etc. All the student teachers got to a chance to teach in front of their peers, handling the Kriya’s, presentations and teaching asana, pranayama and meditation. The final day ended with a beautiful ceremony where we shared our thoughts for the future and how transformational the course had been for everyone including the teachers.

About the Food?

German is a brilliant chef, he was artistically creative with our food as well as it being delicious. We started the day with homemade muesli, fresh seasonal fruits and buffalo yoghurt or curd.   Lunch was roast veggie quinoa salad with hummus, roast pumpkin risotto with shavings of parmesan, etc. Dinner was a light, healthy veggie soup and coconut roti.

Can your Vibration change your Life? – Kundalini yoga 15 May 6.15pm @ Prana Lounge, Col 7

Last week we used the longitude and latitude of MAN (MIND) TRA (PROJECTION) to first notice then change what we were broadcasting through our words and thoughts both conscious and unconscious. This week we look in more detail about vibration.

Do you feel you are in the flow of life today? Or do you feel like life is blocking you, things are not moving, something just does not feel right? Well there could be a physical and energetic resolution to this problem.

39a57cc9d06eb850ce91097eeffe34c3

Quantum science tells us that the Universe is a vibration of energy. We are either vibrating in harmony or disharmony with this energy. We vibrate frequently through our thoughts, words, actions, emotions, and feelings. What we vibrate out through our mind and antennas (the hairs on our body) goes out in waves into the Universe and much like a boom-a-rang we receive it back.

When life seems to be continually placing blocks along your path and nothing seems to be moving, it may be showing you that you are not vibrating in harmony with the Universe. To vibrate with the Universe is to vibrate the higher frequencies of love, compassion, and kindness. (See my earlier blog on vibrational frequencies.)

So how do we change our frequency? One of the best ways to be in the flow of the Universe is through yoga, meditation, gong and chanting mantra. The sacred sounds that attune your mind to the pure vibration of the Universe or sound current.

Shift the frequency of your thoughts to be more aligned with the high frequency of the Universe. When you bring in the higher frequency energy into you and your life watch the Universe respond by clearing your path.   Trouble comes only when you ask for it.  Try out the simple Mantra Sat nam, (chanting a long Sat and short nam) and see how you feel after a few minutes of vibrating at a higher frequency.

Mantra – Control your mind’s Broadcasts! Kundalini yoga 8 May 6.15pm Prana Lounge, Col 7

e456e9853d2fe92816e7f61cce87c479

For Kundalini yogis, the impact of sound and vibration is the teacher or Guru. We are united with the Infinite through the vibration of the sound current or Naad. Kundalini yoga prepares your body and mind and enhances your hearing capacity so that you can recognise and hear the sound current.

I am asked many times when I play the Gong, how did I learn to play? It is a mixture of developing my intuition over the last 15 years, to play intuitively. But I feel that that would not have been enough. The real key was when I learnt and chanted mantra, particularly the Long Ek Ong Kars for 4 years. This enhanced my hearing capacity to allow me to hear the sound current.

Yogi Bhanjan reminds us, that our minds are not under our control and mantra is something that can bring the mind under our control.

Let’s look at the word Mantra. Man, mind and Tra projection. Whatever sets the projection of the mind is called Tra. Tra brings harmony, Tral means harmonious notes and Tra is the projected wave length of harmony.

If I say fire the arrow at a precise longitude and latitude, I am giving you the Tra or projection for that arrow. This is the same with the mind the Tra sets the projection of where the mind wants to get to.

Mantra is a cyclable, a key, a code, a sound which fixes the projection of the mind. It projects through the mind that secret code.

When we understand that on a quantum level everything in the Universe is in a constant state of vibration manifested in either, light, sound and energy, we understand how powerful chanting mantra can be for us. This is not a religious thing or even a mystical thing, it is a practical technology that works.

Start changing what your mind is broadcasting, by chanting instead of thinking in mind loops. Start listening to your mind, emotions and also what you say. Does your projection really reflect you? Or is it , the negative self, the victim self, the judgemental self, the worrier self? And is this what you want to be broadcasting and resonating? If it is not, be the change you want to see.

The purpose of chanting is to have a direct connection with the soul or infinite self that resides beyond your mind. You chant and your mind hears the sound of infinity through your voice, there is no higher meditation you can do. Start chanting Sat nam to yourself. Even this simple phrase of truth or true self will start making a change to your mind and its projection.

Spiritual Discipline – A commitment to Self – 1 May 6.15-7.30pm 9 Greenlands Lane, Col 5

mail-attachment

Last week we relaxed into trust and found peace when we reached deep inside to connect with our true self, our soul. This week we work on how you keep up this new found trust and peace, off the mat in our ever hectic lives. This is where the commitment to self and self-discipline comes in.

I generally disliked discipline, being a naturally lazy sort of person, I thought. But over the years I have realised that it is not the laziness that stopped me being disciplined but it is that I am not truly committed to MYSELF and my personal, physically, mentally and spiritually growth.

images7E3LJVDO

What does it mean to have a spiritual discipline and why do we need it? Well the ancient yogis found out that by relating to symbols and sacred geometry we make a friend out of our mind instead of the ever contradictory flow of our word and thoughts. That is why, kriya, asana, pranayama, mudra (hand positions) and mantra work. In this practice, we start to relate to ourselves on an ever deeper level, beyond logic and the meaning of words. As we relate to these symbols we create with our bodies, finger and mouth (mantra) we move beyond the mind to the stillness we find in mind, body, soul connection i.e. yoga, the sweet point where relaxation is deep and rejuvenative.

We start to change the neurochemistry of our mind, which has been set in stone from our 8.4 million incarnations which influences our cosmology and genealogy which is present in our DNA which spans 7 generations of our ancestors. If we do not want to be tugged by the winds of fate based on these two factors we need to set the intention to change this and that is where your spiritual discipline, sadhana, daily practice, however you want to name it comes in. Because change needs a little effort. That does not mean you need to dedicate an hour every day, this for most people other than yoga teacher is difficult. But how about 3 mins. Can you give yourself 3 mins every day to sit, stretch, be, breathe, exist, chant, sing etc.?   If you cannot you need to ask yourself why? If you can start small and aim a little higher every few months, but keep up, so you will be kept up.

Relxation, the Art of Happiness – Kundalini Yoga 6.15-7.30pm Mon 24 April @ Prana Lounge

“Just Relax”. It seems such an easy thing to say and do, but in reality, on a deeper level, relaxation is difficult for most people to achieve because of the subliminal level of emotional conflict or duality we exit in. We tend to live life through a mask or persona. This persona is created through the unconscious habits and patterns or maps in our mind which then triggers a secondary level of projected emotions. Even as we go about the normal day to day routine, there is an inner emotive dialogue that generates patterns of anxiety, anger, hopelessness or self-defeating emotions.

I first notice this when I left my high stress job, as a lawyer working on a high profile Public Inquiry into a disaster in London and moved to peaceful Quito, the capital of Ecuador. Suddenly there was no longer a logical reason to feel stressed but that underlying feeling starting to creep up from under my skin. I was happy, newly married, financially very well off and enjoying a new beginning in South America a long-term dream fulfilled, yet here I was feeling anxious! It was not until I started Kundalini Yoga and a deep meditation practice that I came to understand that this anxiety was not logical or as a result of circumstances, but a deep-seated feeling of duality we all experience at some level.

letting go

In Kundalini yoga, what I described above as my life is called commotional living. It drains the reserve energy of your nervous system and creates defences and armoring against discomfort.

The key to release this is through deep relaxation. But this is not simply better or more sleep, a massage or time off. To truly, deeply relax we need to change the distribution of prana, the vital lifeforce energy and relax the nervous system to allow reorganisation of patterns of being and doing.

On a more subtle level we need to relax into our core self by letting go and trusting that we are not solely the doer. If you can relax about the unknown, the infinite or generator, organise or destroyer (GOD) 75% of your tension will go away. With this realisation, we can be relaxed under the most stressful situations, as we remember our identity or Real self, the soul in the most unreal situations.

As yogi Bhajan says, “Total harmonious relaxation cures the body. To achieve this there must be a coordination between the 3 facets of ourselves: body, mind and soul”.

The Benefits of Deep Relaxation

  • Rejuvenating the parasympathetic nervous system.
  • Redistribution of prana.
  • Releasing rigid patterns in the muscles and promoting blood flow.
  • Learning how to let go of stress in the emotions and body
  • “Memorising” the relaxation response.

The Anatomy of Depression – Kundalini Yoga and Meditation Tues 11 April 6-7pm@ The Om Space, Col 5

mindfulnessHaving completed 5 days of a deep, detox and spending time rejuvenating myself from within. This week we will focus on opening up to life especially through the breath and understanding the anatomy of depression or negative feelings.

Yogi Bhanjan says that depression is a symptom of shallow breathing and locked pelvic area. He says that people are mistaken in thinking depression and negativity are a result of mood or circumstance. He encourages people to do a heavy breath from the navel point to move negativity or depression very fast.

Practical Tip

Try lots of deep breathing starting from the pelvic floor and breath of fire this week, to counter any negativity in your thoughts and emotions. Start with 3mins daily, but if possible extend this up to 31 mins.

Authentic Living Retreat – Negambo 25&26 March 2017

About the Venue

Villa Araylia is hotel where love is in the detail, set just a few minutes’ walk from the Negambo Beach. We stayed in a very spacious comfortable room, and the practice space was just next door. Each room and bathroom has a bespoke design in the polished concrete, together with beautiful bathrooms and upstairs balconies looking out on to the garden.

P1040833.JPG

About the Retreat

The Retreat was about understanding what being authentic was then looking at practical ways to put ourselves in the picture and bring that authentic self into our relationships and life. We worked on opening the heart, forgiveness and creating more self-love and conscious communication. We also connected through our intuition to our higher selves and did some work communicating with animals.

The days had a relaxed pace, we had time for jumping into the sea, plus gong bath relaxations after lunch.

P1040826

We concluded by doing a deep practice to consolidate the weekends works, which left us feeing, completely connected and joyful.

One of the Kriya’s from Day 1:

Part 1

This exercise is called Reverse Adi Shakti Kriya. Here you are mentally and hypnotically blessing yourself. This self-blessing is to affect and correct the magnetic field. It is said that doing this exercise will hurt if you have a lot of anger. Self-help is very difficult for those who are angry. After doing this exercise for 5 minutes your muscles may start hurting if your diet is improper. The taste in your mouth will change if you are breathing correctly.

Posture: Sit in Easy Pose with a straight spine and hold your right palm six to nine inches above the top center of your head. The right palm faces down, blessing you. This self-blessing corrects the aura. The left elbow is bent with the upper arm near the rib cage. The forearm and hand point upward. The left palm faces forward and blesses the world.

Eyes: The eyes are closed and focus at the lunar center in the middle of the chin.

Breath: Breathe long, slow, and deep with a feeling of self-affection. Try to bring the breath to one breath per minute: Inhale for 20 seconds, hold for 20 seconds, exhale for 20 seconds.[1]

Time: Continue for 11 minutes. Then inhale deeply and move slowly and directly into position for Exercise 2.

Part 2

This exercise will benefit everything between the neck and navel. It will strength to the heart and will open up the heart center.

Posture:
Extend your arms straight out in front, parallel to the ground, palms facing down. Stretch out to your maximum.

Eyes: The eyes are closed and focused at the lunar center in the center of the chin.

Breath: The breath is long, slow, and deep.

Time: Continue for 3 minutes. Then inhale deeply and move slowly and directly into position for Exercise 3.

Part 3

Posture: Stretch your arms straight up with the palms facing forward. There is no bend in the elbows.

Eyes: The eyes are closed and focused at the lunar center.

Breath: The breath continues to be long, slow, and deep.

Time: Continue for 3minutes.

To finish: Inhale, hold your breath for 10 seconds while you stretch your arms upward (try to stretch so much that your buttocks are lifted) and tighten all the muscles of your body. Exhale. Repeat this sequence two more times.

This set can be found in Self-Knowledge compiled by Harijot Kaur, p. 11, available from KRI.

1.5 tablespoons sesame oil

1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 tablespoon tahini

Back Pain & The Psycho Emotional Self – 27 Mar 6.15-7.30pm @ Prana Lounge, Col 7

One of the reasons we suffer from more chronic back pain (not caused by an injury), as we get older, is a result of limited range of movement. As we sit at our office desks or computer screens, our mind which can expand to infinity meets up with the world-wide web, an infinite source of information. We lose track that we even have a body. This lack of awareness ends up leaving us with overtight muscles in certain areas like the neck and shoulders and weak muscles around your stomach and lower spine which can cause chronic pain. Small children rarely suffer from aches and pains this is principally because they are always moving in a variety of ways, side stretches, up and down movements, they literally cannot sit down in one position for a moment, but this makes for a healthy body.

We should not forget the psycho emotional self which plays a big part in chronic pain especially in the back. The psycho emotional body can be seen as the intermediate point between the physical body and the spirit or soul. Therefore, emotional pain we have suffer or disconnection from spirit can lead to physical repercussions in the body.

Connecting the physical event and discomfort with a psychological meaning can open inner connections to your own emotional responses and further expand your awareness. The pain, in effect, gives you permission to realise yourself as the holistic creature you truly are.

Kundalini Yoga is great for the back. In Kundalini Yoga, we spend a lot of time working with the flexibility of the spine. We move the whole back in many different ways that you don’t normally do in adult life. We use static stretching, range of motion movements, and also move energy through the spine. In addition, we work on the energy fields and learn and practice meditation techniques that clear and clarify the mind and emotions. The net result is a healthy and pain free back as well as the means to keep it that way.

Have a look at this table below and find the area you are having an issue with. Try out some of the recommended meditations and affirmations to bring healing to your back and emotional body. Try my gong bath this week as we heal our psycho emotional self and our spines. Please book to secure your place, Om Space 011 2507515.

Anatomy of Psycho Emotional Self – Kundalini yoga 6-7pm Tues 21 March 2017

Fiona yoga pose

While recently dealing with a right knee issue, I decided to go back and look at my blog on 15 August 2015 which looked at our anatomy as the psycho-emotional expression of our life.

What does this mean? It means that your body, pains, problems etc., mirror what is going on in your mind and emotions and vice versa. The body like the Universe was created in balance. Your body is always trying to get back to that natural state. When we do not deal with our emotional issues, i.e. process them correctly they create small blocks in the body, which change our movement. The physical constraint coupled with a movement that compensates for this block, ends up in chronic health problems. As I discovered with my right knee. When we start to spend time every day balancing our bodies we start to change the physical imbalance which can help process the psycho-emotional imbalance. I have created a table to help you understand how the major joints relate to your emotions and how to balance each one.

Body Part Emotion Imbalance Key to Balance Chakra
Ankles lower legs Standards, those you set for yourself verses the standards set by society, family etc. It you do not balance doing what you want to what society wants for you, you will have ankle and lower leg problems Massage the heal to 4inches along the Achilles tendon – with your thumbs 3mins.

Balancing on one foot, tree pose, eagle.

1st chakra
Knee right Motivation You make plans but do not have the energy, will, to see them through. Kriya for knees. Balancing on a block. Strengthening your willpower at the navel point to make you determined. Channel anger into determination to complete a project 1st chakra
Knee left Intention, creativity, ideas When motivation is greater than intention you get bored easily. Kriya for knees. Balancing on a block.

Be more creative, patient and master things.

1st chakra
Hips Your Purpose – conception Hips problems prevalent in old age when you are running out of time to complete your purpose Kriyas to balance the pelvis, butterfly pose. 2nd chakra
Arms Sharing and caring beyond just your self interest or

Closed heart, isolated, introvert

Open your heart, selfless service. Balancing the heart centre. 4th chakra
Shoulders Carrying the weight of your thoughts and worries on your shoulders Try to resolve worries and negative thought patterns Shoulder shrugs, kriya for shoulders and neck. Use mantra to change negative thoughts to positive ones. 5th chakra
Neck Thoughts travel from left inner ear to right inner ear via your throat When you have thought loops, unexpressed worries, this build up creates neck problems. Neck rolls, thinking and worrying less.

Use mantra to change negative thoughts to positive ones.

5th chakra

Bring your body to balance, allow this balance to work on your mind and emotions and finally affect the world around you. This is the root nature and cause of manifestation. Your purpose (pelvis) in life is to manifest your intentions (left knee) through motivation (right knee) while keeping up your principles and standards (lower leg/ ankles).

Emotions – Your Biochemical Gland Laboratory – Kundalini Yoga

aquarian 3

Last week looked at the Nervous system, how we withstand the stresses and strains of life. The depth or strength of your nervous system determined whether you could experience the moment, process it and let it go.

We look at anatomy in Kundalini yoga because we want to understand why our brain produces certain thoughts and what feelings come from what glands and organs. We even investigate what foods, habits, yoga asanas and breathing techniques are recommended to regulate our hormones or endocrine system.

The endocrine glands manufacture certain chemical compounds called hormones which regulate all the functions of the body. The body and personality are dependent on the proper functioning of the endocrine glands for the maintenance of good health. For example, an over secretion of thyroxin, (produced by the thyroid gland) makes us irritable, tense, overexcited, speedy. Thoughts race around and the body metabolism speeds up. This is the opposite when the there is a under production of thyroxin.

Yogi Bhajan used the half cobra for a lot of the sets because half cobra is very important in relating to the emotional body. It opens up the pelvis and the pelvis is the bowl that holds the glands and organs that produce the hormones and peptides that create a lot of our emotional sensation. To attain optimum health, every gland must work efficiently and in harmony with the other glands. Together they form an axis controlled by the master pituitary gland and brain.

Emotional Intelligence is understanding that all emotions are energy which can be used for our benefit. We have been told to be afraid of our anger so be bottle it up. The wise use of Angry energy is determination. The energy conversion in Confusion it decisiveness. Confusion is just decisiveness with no place to go.

Our bodies are the most masterful, chemical, laboratories know to the Universe. Make a note this week, what makes you angry, anxious, upset, fearful etc. What are the triggers for these emotions? Be mindful when they are triggered to take action, but not be reactive. Is it food, people or certain scenarios? Start creating a map for yourself of your emotional body to really start mastering the self. Then use your body, breath and mind to start mastering your glands and organs, bringing them to balance so we can feel our emotions, know what to do with each one, experience the present moment without the mental commentary and process the what it.
