Acceptance, Self-Acceptance – Kundalini Yoga 18 November 2019

9caf3c68-2589-40b0-a47c-bba0dfc7181d

This week I want to focus on acceptance and what this really means? How we can embody it? Last week my mum’s health deteriorated and I got a severe muscle cramp in my upper right arm so much so that after our Week 2 Kundalini Yoga Teacher Training Level 1 Sri Lanka 2019, I could not even lift my arm. I remember saying to my mum when she was in pain, relax and just accept that you cannot move for a few days until your leg gets better. It is so easy to give advice but taking it is a lot harder, as I found out. I first felt upset that I had an arm injury, why and how did it happen to me? The mind keeps you occupied with these questions a good distraction and helps to start getting you emotional. Then I remembered my words to my mum and thought I just need to accept this situation, relax and stop trying to work out what went wrong. I relaxed and stop trying to do things and I had to rely on my husband to help me, brush my hair, dress me, even feed me as picking up a fork was painful. This morning I woke up 70% better. I believe if you can really just accept a situation as it is without trying to deny it, pretend it is not there or reject it, it will start to balance itself out. A Yogi Bhajan quote, “ Embrace to erase”.

27d97f14-7f0c-4ef8-8400-5c5a2ff4e699

We are always trying to change life, improve ourselves and our situations, when we fail we feel defeated, judge ourselves harshly. We need to start with an attitude of acceptance, that reality at this moment even if we do not like it, has occurred and only from the acceptance of this moment can we make change possible. Self-acceptance is the same. Instead of self-improvement, move towards a sense of self-acceptance, self-love, even in times of pain.   Accept yourself for who you are and what you are before attempting to strive for self-improvement. It is a subtle yet powerful shift in attitude. Be aware notice your talents.

We may not like reality but by blaming and shouting about the unfairness of life does not change anything, save your energy. First accept and from this attitude take action to improve your situation.

Kundalini Yoga – 6.15pm 23 Sept @ Prana Lounge

The Retreat

Kundalini Yoga Teacher Training 2019 has started off as a deeply transformative experience for the students and training team alike.  We learnt through experiential workshops about our breath signatures, how our nervous system has plasticity to change as a result of glial cells, the compassion at of the heart of a kundalini yoga teacher, the Vayu’s in yogic anatomy, the quantum technology of mantra that affects us as a cellular level, etc. during 7 intensive days starting at 5am and ending at 6pm.

The Venue  as usual we started off in Colombo spending our last 3 days at Guava House, enjoying the variety of birds, squirrels, nature and prana which was an uplifting experience.  We ended the last morning on the misty pool deck at Guava House with Sadhana staring at a starlit sky before chanting into the dawn to clear the stories that litter our subconscious and stop us living in the present moment.

Yoga Bhajan Birthday – 6.15pm Mon 26 August Prana Lounge by Donation

compassion

This week we come together as a Yoga community and spiritual family to celebrate Yogi Bhajan’s birthday, 26 August 1929, the legacy and technology of Kundalini yoga that he has left us.

He was not the inventor of Kundalini yoga, but for me he systemised it into a formula that you and I can understand and more importantly use in our daily lives, to be healthier, happier and feel connected to our spirit. The love I feel for our teachers comes from this.

We will join in celebration with the many communities all over the world that will come together this Monday, 26 August to honour Yogi Bhajan and celebrate his tireless teaching, coaching, comforting and elevating his students through his life and through the teachings.

This year the venue is Prana Lounge where we will start with a Kundalini yoga kriya, deep gong relaxation, ending with a Healing circle meditation and sharing of food and laughter. Please bring some food to share and pay a donation to Prana Lounge.

Change your energy state- Kundalini Yoga Retreats 18-20 May Amba Estate

Last week we worked on the Pranic cavity under the 8 vertebrae which is one of the store houses for our pranic energy.  We needed to get our energy back after the disturbing, unbalancing effect of collective grief, outrage, fear and pain we suffered as community in Sri Lanka.  This week we learn how to alter this pranic energy to create the effect we need at any given time.

This is what Yogi Bhajan has to say: “You have to learn to alter your energy. If at one frequency you are freaking out, change or alter your energy. You will not freak out.  You cannot change the time, but you can change the place. You cannot get out of your body but you can change its energy.  If the right nostril is sending fire (Agni) energy and you are thinking something very neurotic, start breathing from the left nostril. It will send the cooling sitalee energy.  If you are irritated, very depressed, in a most weird mental state, start breathing from the right nostril. Within 3 minutes after you shift the nostril, you will be in a different mental state.  The ability to change nostrils in breathing should be taught to your children within the first 3 years.”

We will practice the meditation to show you how to alter your energy state at your command.

Love, attraction & Kundalini Yoga

authentic_relationships

Attraction – Kundalini Yoga and relationships

If we think that a romantic relationship will complete us, make up for our lack of self esteem or make us happy we are wrong. Dr Hair Simian says.

It is in the nature of an intimate relationship to reveal some of our deepest attachments and neuroses. Without a consistent way to dissolve the patterns of the subconscious, the patterns of the subconscious will dissolve the relationship. Our fear, limitations, and attachments define the limits of our tolerance. Tolerance is the foundation of a relationship. If you are looking for a perfect and ideal person to relate to, there isn’t one. If you’re going to reject your partner due to his or her faults or misguided concepts, you might as well leave now and save time. If you live for each other and encourage your partner to grow, develop, and expand in tolerance, you will be happy in that relationship. Growing and changing together develops the depth of a relationship. Share your growth.

If you ask your partner to complete you, you will be completely unhappy. We are by nature whole, complete, happy humans with a spiritual identity. If our identity relies on our relationship, the fluctuations of that relationship will bring you with it. If instead you rely on developing your relationship with yourself and your soul then you will remain steady.

Qualities to think about in a relationship:

  • Am I attracted to that person’s consciousness and spirit?
  • Do we share common ground on our, vibratory compatibility, similar vision regarding children, etc?
  • As conscious humans we are tolerant and grow in tolerance towards our partners.
  • If you want a relationship so you can get sometime out of your partner you will not be content. If your focus is on giving to the Universe, the Universe will serve you. When giving is your intention, you will be deeply satisfied in your relationship.
  • We all want a warm and cozy home. When the home has a cozy, warm, and graceful environment, the relationship has a warm nest to grow in. When the home is chaotic and disruptive, then division and isolation can happen between the partners. When there is freshly cooked food and the house smells good, it is difficult to argue. Happiness can be attained at home.
  • We must nurture our relationships by making time for each other. Withholding love and an attitude of scarcity will constrict and restrict the love between two people. If you don’t have time to hold your beloved, then it is time to adjust your schedule.

Sex starts at the third eye or 6th chakra with intention and perception. The balance of your nervous system and glandular system is important.

Dr Hari Simran says: The parasympathetic nervous system controls the rest and relaxing functions of the body and is necessary to access for arousal. If there is any fear or stress in the relationship or individual insecurity, then sexual arousal is blocked. In Kundalini Yoga therapy we recommend long deep breathing through the left nostril, Kirtan Kriya, and gong meditation to help access the ability to relax. To achieve a full orgasm requires accessing the sympathetic nervous system. This requires a degree of sexual tension, attraction, and passion. If couples “take each other for granted,” the passion begins to be elusive. In Kundalini Yoga therapy, we suggest that couples chant together, participate in White Tantric Yoga®, and do yoga that stimulates the sympathetic flow.

Mental Noise and Stress – Kundalini Yoga

brain

Relieve mental noise and stress

Stress increases mental noise, it is a universal effect. As mental noise increases our mind fills with sensations and thoughts. The mind begins to repeat things, get caught up in the same thought again and again. Feelings and thoughts can also seem unrelated. As I described in class last week, think of your mind as a large pond. When we receive sensory overload whether coming from traffic, loud noises, trying to do too many things at once or from inside our heads the still pond of our mind becomes agitated, when those waves become too fast and strong it can even express itself as mental illness, schizophrenia, OCD, etc, narratives or voices that seem separate from ourselves. These disturbed waves lead to mental fogginess, making mistakes and finally insulation to try and deal with this overload. Our mind creates stories and distortions which we believe are real. We become lost in the detail or lose sight of the whole becoming more impulsive, acting out of fear, trapped in habits becoming a different person or our stress personality.

We try to escape the pain of our sensory overload, by escaping our reality. We watch TV when we should be studying for our exams. We clean out a cupboard when we need to complete our tax form. We seek one great cause of our misery, our relationship, our families, our jobs, etc. We seek one solution to end our pain, if we are just more religious, good, follow a guru, etc we will be saved. Our striving for this one great solution becomes a platform for judging others, we start blaming and isolating ourselves and/or we escape into fantasy, TV, films, etc.

Now we are only using our old reptilian brain, situated at the brain stem to function. The limbic system which gives us compassion and the ability to relate to others stops functioning. We are in survival mode, alive but not living.

IMG_1021

Ok that all sounds terrible now what can we do. It is important that we have a daily practice of reducing the internal and external noise vibrating in our mind. Watch those waves and then dive deep into the stillness that exists even if the nosiest of brains. You could use the tools of yoga, pranayama, meditation, kriya, gong, going for a swim, etc. However being mindful (ie watching your thoughts) is not enough. You need to go one step further to move your mind into a neutral meditative state, zero or shuniya, even if it lasts for just for a few seconds. You need this mental silence to help you recalibrate your mind. It is like the reset button on your phone when it is playing up. From this reset state our brain function can get back to normal and we be the healthy, happy humans we were born to be.  Sat nam Fi x sanasumainsrilanka.wordpress.com read our weekly blogs and brain candy updatesraymond.fiona@gmail.comwww.sanasuma.co.uk0778011984.

A Strong Nervous System means less Stress – Kundalini yoga 6.15pm Mon Sept 10@ Prana Lounge, Col 7

553967d4b499b312071c3d62066f0719A Strong Nervous System helps us Deal with Stress

Living our daily lives especially in the Age of Aquarius, juggling, work, family, friends and finances can be difficult at the best of times, but when challenges or crisis hits we can feel overwhelmed by pressure which can literally derail us and end up as STRESS.

How we respond consciously or unconsciously to our environment, people and situations all depends on the strength of our nervous system. The nervous system consists of three parts: Central Nervous System (sensation & motor control), Peripheral Nervous System (connects nerves to organs and limbs) and Autonomic Nervous System (emergency response: Sympathetic- “gas pedal” & Parasympathetic- “brake pedal”). Nerve impulses from these 3 different systems communicate with our glands, muscles and organs via electrical and chemical signals to sense and respond, or sense and react.

Some of the benefits to having a strong nervous system are that you can manage stress, respond less automatically and process sensations and emotions so they do not create patterns/habits in our sub and unconscious mind.

Have you ever looked away during a scary movie or if you see something painful? It feels like you cannot bare to watch what is about to happen, anticipating something bad? This is what a weak nervous system is like. A person cannot contain the reality of an event and therefore avoids it altogether. It is as if your container, the nervous system, does not have the depth or inner resources to deal with the painful or difficult events and this governs the limit of the amount of stress or pain that can be withstood. Your nerves get frayed and the thalamus (an area at the back of your brain) filters sensations and decides which thoughts and sensations make it to the conscious mind or which go unnoticed and are pushed into the unconscious mind. These thoughts left unprocessed end up in nervous disorders.

When you develop a strong nervous system, it allowsyouto experience an event no matter how painful. You cannot control what is happening, but you can control whether you allow yourself to experience reality.

A strong nervous system is like a deep well, it gives you the ability to hold whatever situation comes into your life. A strong nervous system can allow you to experience and process painful events faster, as you can ALLOW the experience without avoiding it, process the feelings and not get attached. It can also reflect in your depth in meditation. With a strong nervous system you can meditate for hours without distracting pain. When the nervous system develops the capacity to hold pain, then your mind can bring awareness to it and then release it.

We have become a society that seeks pleasure and avoids pain at all costs. I am not saying that we should seek out pain, but the reality of life is that there are good times and bad times, this is just the polarity of existence. By consciously avoiding the tough times you are running away from reality. We all do it on some level, but the truth is that avoiding pain causes neurosis. It is important to have a strong nervous system to be graceful during tough times.

anti stress yoga

Practical tips – What does this all mean?

Practice soothing the nervous system, through yoga and meditation. Yoga increases the energy moving through particular nerve pathways. Breath of fire is great for this. This is why sometimes you feel light headed when practicing this breath, because it has moved a block, now energy can flow along that nerve pathway releasing toxins and giving you renewed vitality, which creates that sensation of dizziness.

Yoga also works on stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system, your brake pedal in life, by increasing the parasympathetic response, so you do not get the feeling of being overwhelmed. You can ALLOW yourself to see the thought, or feel the emotion, bring conscious awareness to it and release it.

The neural pathways in people with chronic pain become hypersensitive so they feel pain much faster. Yoga decreases the pain sensation by increasing the amount of information travelling down a shared neural pathway, effectively diluting the pain information. This means you withstand more pain, once again bring conscious awareness to that area and heal it.

Meditation including mantra and eye focus actively stimulates the thalamus and changes how it deals with sensory information, once again allowing us to be in the moment without rejecting it.

Try meditation to “To Stabilize the State.” This meditation works with the armpits which Yogi Bhajan said, if the brain is the engine the armpits are the exhaust. By working the armpits, the connection to our central nervous system, we strengthen the whole nervous system.

What Kundalini Yoga Awakens?- Monday 27 August 6.15pm Prana Lounge, Colombo 7

What Kundalini Awakens?

I get a lot of students asking me so What is Kundalini Yoga and what does it awaken? My experience is that many people misunderstand what Kundalini is, they think it is just a sexual energy, maybe something that will give them powers?. It is a vast concept! Yogi Bhajans reply when asked if Kundalini was dangerous, his answer was, Yes, Kundalini is dangerous. If someone has awakened Kundalini energy you cannot lie to that person, you cannot cheat that person, you cannot dominate that person. It is the energy, supreme energy of the human being, the problem is not Kundalini awakening but a person spending their life with it unawakened. The job of the human being is to awaken to what you really are.

If human organism or vehicle you operate is dominated by the lower energy centres, the person will operate from a perspective of density.   What is real and most valuable for that persons will be the material realm. As we know from our weeks working on Happiness, our happiness is not influenced by our material wealth.   This focus will constrict the Kundalini energy in the lower triangle and will not be feeding the higher chakras.

When you start to have a kundlini experience you start to understand what you really are. What created you, that is the process of Kundalini Yoga . Beyond your gender, your race, your bank account, you learn to concentrate on what is in the nucleus of you, what you really are, spirit. In order to feel this subtle shift, you need to purify the blood stream, purify the density of the body and so that the pituitary gland can secrete into the blood stream to create a conducive environment to awaken your consciousness. That person has a different type of brightness coming out of their eyes. What they really are in coming out through the instrument of the body. That is what makes you a magnetic presence and that transmit to all that see you.  You are in love with life and it overflows into everything you do. You become you, genuine you, guided by your intuition. It is a potent and profound path and needs hard work, discipline and determination but you will see the results when you start to awaken.

7 Steps to Happiness & Yogi Ji’s Birthday – Kundalini celebration Sun 26 August 5.30pm@ 9 Greenlands Lane, Col 5

7 steps

Yogi Ji’s 7 Steps to Happiness

Last week we learnt that joy came from bringing more spirit into our life. We then begin to experience our lives as part of an endless giving cycle. We give to others and the Infinite within us, gives to us. We start to feel no lack, we do not react to fear, we embrace our shadow and our light. Happiness comes from being in the flow of life. Yogi Bhajan taught that there are 7 specific steps to happiness. Each step builds on the next. Happiness is the crowning result of developing our consciousness and increasing the percentage of spirit we feel in our life. When we enter the state of happiness, then we are capable of living for each other.

The 7 steps are: 1. Commitment
In every life you are meant to commit. Commitment needs discipline, decide you will commit to conscious awareness every day. Go to sleep with a dream and wake up with this purpose. That is why the word is commit-meant. Commitment gives you character.

  1. Character
Character is when all your characteristics – all facets, flaws and facts – are under your control. Yin and yang meet there, totally balanced, you accept all of yourself, warts and all. Character gives you dignity.
  2. Dignity
People start trusting you, liking you, respecting you. Dignity will give you divinity.
  3. Divinity
Divinity is when people have no duality. You have mastered the up and downs of life and can meet each challenge with the knowledge you can win, because you can trust yourself. Then people trust you right away. They have no fear about you. Divinity gives you grace.be the change
  4. Grace
Where there is grace, there is no interference, no gap between two people, no hidden agenda. Grace gives you the power to sacrifice.
  5. Sacrifice
Allows you to serve from a place of divine, compassion where you are so full you are overflowing. You can stand in any pain for that person. That sacrifice gives you happiness.
  6. Happiness
“You should make yourself so happy, that by looking at you, other people become happy. Join us this Sunday to celebrate Yogi Ji’s birthday, with a Kundalini Class and tea party. Please bring a dish. Sat nam x raymond.fiona@gmail.com 0778011984 www.sanasuma.co.uk www.3ho.org
