Yogi Ji’s 7 Steps to Happiness

Last week we learnt that joy came from bringing more spirit into our life. We then begin to experience our lives as part of an endless giving cycle. We give to others and the Infinite within us, gives to us. We start to feel no lack, we do not react to fear, we embrace our shadow and our light. Happiness comes from being in the flow of life. Yogi Bhajan taught that there are 7 specific steps to happiness. Each step builds on the next. Happiness is the crowning result of developing our consciousness and increasing the percentage of spirit we feel in our life. When we enter the state of happiness, then we are capable of living for each other.

The 7 steps are: 1. Commitment
In every life you are meant to commit. Commitment needs discipline, decide you will commit to conscious awareness every day. Go to sleep with a dream and wake up with this purpose. That is why the word is commit-meant. Commitment gives you character.

  1. Character
    Character is when all your characteristics – all facets, flaws and facts – are under your control. Yin and yang meet there, totally balanced, you accept all of yourself, warts and all. Character gives you dignity.
  2. Dignity
    People start trusting you, liking you, respecting you. Dignity will give you divinity.
  3. Divinity
    Divinity is when people have no duality. You have mastered the up and downs of life and can meet each challenge with the knowledge you can win, because you can trust yourself. Then people trust you right away. They have no fear about you. Divinity gives you grace.be the change
  4. Grace
    Where there is grace, there is no interference, no gap between two people, no hidden agenda. Grace gives you the power to sacrifice.
  5. Sacrifice
    Allows you to serve from a place of divine, compassion where you are so full you are overflowing. You can stand in any pain for that person. That sacrifice gives you happiness.
  6. Happiness

Reactive Personality ie Hidden Self

Over the last few weeks we have been looking at how we can be truly happy, to feel good about ourselves, be able to cope with difficult feelings and circumstances. But the biggest obstacle to all of this is what Yogi Bhajan named as the Reactive personality or Hidden self.

Firstly we need to understand that we originate from the soul which does not include any polarity, just oneness, which reflects true self. We incarnate into a Universe of polarities, where our persona and shadow self exist. Persona is the part of our personality which we project into the world, how we would like to be seen. The Shadow is the part of the personality which we keep hidden. For example if you are a very kind, generous person there is within you a selfish and mean side. In order not to be at odds with your Shadow you need to acknowledge both sides of the persona but choose to be kind and generous to yourself and others. Understanding that sometimes you need to put yourself first and look after your financial needs. Then there is no conflict between the persona and the shadow.

Within the Shadow lies the Hidden or reactive self. This part of us is created through experiences we had usually in the first 7 years of our life. Just like the little angle baby becomes a monster during the terrible twos, this reactive self does not die with childhood. It stays in the subconscious realm as we get older, holding on to its hidden agenda, undermining our ability to appreciate life, be happy and fulfilled. The reactive self is activated when we do not get what we want. In these circumstances we become angry but it is not just feelings of anger but the reactive mind gets involved, saying, why am I angry, I feel bad about being angry, etc. Adding layer upon layer to this initial feeling from the hidden self.

How to recognise the Reactive or Hidden Self ?

  1. Feelings of regret about the past, past mistakes, etc.
  2. When you begin defending yourself because feelings of shame, loss and fear arise. It prevents us from acknowledging our accountability for what happens to us in life. If it is happening to you, it is happening through you.
  3. We may be busy, our lives filled with many people, tasks and adventures but inside we are not content.
  4. The interconnection between the left and right hemisphere is weakened. The effect is often a change in voice and tone. We are angry, childlike, talkative, full of stories, sneaky and insecure.
  5. Feeling sorry for ourselves, life is unfair, living in our stories.
  6. . Because we are not neutral about ourselves we dismiss the hidden self and its agendas and do not believe the outside world is affected by our private thoughts and feelings. The ego and subconscious mind align with the hidden self. This now reactive personality based on unprocessed childhood trauma, creates thousands of thoughts, feelings and narratives to serve our hidden agenda. We react in the same way to all situations, which may not make sense in the current moment. The gap between us and reality increases.   If our habit is to simple react, or to react and deny we reacted we divide and fight ourselves. It is just like trying to see ourselves in a shattered mirror.

These are just some of the signs of the Reactive personality. When they occur the hidden personality is dominating our normal personality

So how do we deal with it?

Shiv Charan our teacher is very clear about this, he says when you observe the Hidden self, you have got to be very very firm.

  1. There is nothing to heal.
  2. Do not mentally react to it or start to analysis it or discuss it.
  3. Hit it with a Mantra. Mantra is like a tread, a diver’s life line, keep chanting, keep the rhythm and you will get through the waves of it until you come out on the other side.
  4. Have a tool box you can use when the Reactive Self arises, Inhale 4 exhale 1.
  5. For most people we will never be able to get rid of the hidden self reactive personality, only put it to sleep.

Emotional Intelligence – Kundalini Yoga 6.45pmWed 25 July @ 9 Greenlands Lane

Our happiness will not be complete until we understand our emotions and what they are trying to tell us. We feel that emotions drain us and if we could live without negative emotions, we would be happier.

GuruMeher has made a study of our emotions, he calls them the Senses of the Soul. He says “We do two things wrong with emotions we either let them take over us or we repress them.”   Students and yoga teachers alike have been asking me about how to deal with difficult emotions and I feel that especially the spiritual community tries to bypass difficult emotions. In fact I had a friend who did 3 to 4 kriyas and meditations per day to try and kriya her way out of feelings dark emotions. You may feel better initially but these emotions only get stronger if denied or vilified.

GuruMeher talks about emotions being the immune system of our mental health, therefore when we have an emotion use the clarity of our mind to try and understand what that emotion is trying to tell us.

Practical Solutions

So how do we do this? If an emotion is bothering you bring it into your consciousness awareness. Especially when you meditate. So next time you meditate bring in the emotion and listen to it what is it trying to tell you. Your emotions do not talk like your brain.   Start observing yourself not just your thoughts but listen with your self sensory system to feel the answer.

If you are in a meditative or neutral mind state when you bring up a difficult emotion your pre frontal cortex lights up and you feel clear, in normal situations your limbic system takes over and you go cloudy and unconscious. For example, feel the shame and after a while the shame will not feel so bad, as long as you are not feeding it with your thoughts. You need to feel this on a somatic (physical)level. Ask yourself, what do I need to do to feel better? This is the future of therapy ,it is self therapy. You will find yourself through it. It is a simple formula, you know what you are feeling and know what to do to feel better.

Cultivate Happiness

Yogi Bhanjan tells us that our birthright is to be healthy, happy and holy. But what would it take to make you happy? If you had all the money in the world, would just material wealth make you truly happy? Most probably not, because happiness is not a thing it is state of being. To make your life happier it takes conscious effort and cultivation of new habits and patterns.

A Yale psychologist Laurie Santos created a course (that nearly 25% of all Yale undergraduates signed up for in 2018) which concluded that if we could spend month learning the technology of happiness we would be happier. It is a bit like learning to play the violin or a new language, you need to commit and practice.

Santos calls it rewirement, something we talk about a lot in Kundalini the ability to create neuroplasticity in the brain to retrain our thinking, i.e. qualify our thoughts so they serve you not the neurotic monkey mind. The teachings also tell us that happiness is not just an emotional state, but has a physical and spiritual component.

On a physical level we can bring greater happiness into our lives if we start connecting to our navel point or Nabhi. This point is 2-3 inches below our belly button, but lies greatly unused by the modern human being. It is the point where our nerve endings and meridian points come together to connect us to the world. By creating a strong and centred nabhi we can control our health and energy.   Yogi Bhajan says:

“Whatever you hear, whatever you see, and whatever you say is controlled by this navel point. If the navel point pulse is felt a little above the navel point, it means diarrhea. If it is a little below, constipation. If it is on the left side, gas. If it is on the right, burp. And all it has to be off is one millimeter. If the navel point is one millimeter off, your entire digestive system, your feelings–you are not you.” When you do not feel you, you do not feel happy.

Spiritually to feel happy we need connection. Connection to nature, loved ones and our spiritual family. My experience last week of spending 6 days with my spiritual community on retreat left me feeling uplifted inspired and deeply connected which in turn made me very happy and content. Serving, helping, giving and general acts of kindness make us feel happy. This is because we are serving the spirit in the other which we recognise has the same needs as ourselves.

Practical Solutions

In the 2012 New Zealand study researchers found that the following behaviour enhanced enjoyment: This list is just a start.

  1. Talking to another person about feeling good and lucky
  2. Laughing and telling yourself how proud you are of yourself
  3. Focusing in on the moment
  4. Physical – more sleep, exercise and deep relaxation
  5. Emotional: Making a list of all the things you feel grateful for as well as savouring special moments of your day. A cup of tea, the breeze on your skin, your first breath in the morning.
  6. Radom acts of kindness.

Seeing the world as it is not as we Are?

I read an interesting quote this week, “we see the world not as it is but as we are. A saint sees the world as a saint, a killer sees only murders or victims” by Neil Gaiman. I think we are all guilty of living in our mind. We talked about how the brain favours its blue print of the world, so we can live in low power mode. Therefore it does not have to experience reality as it is, new, fresh, for the first time. It quickly categorises experiences so we can place them in the correct pigeon hole and therefore not really experience the reality of what is. On the surface this seems like a simple solution so your brain can work on more pressing issues like your problems, worries, regrets etc. But in reality it stops you experiencing the wonder of life.   Every taste is stale not fresh and vibrant. Every birdsong goes unnoticed instead of being music to your ears.

The gap between seeing the world as we are, as oppose to, how it is, is suffering. In short, we just keep on getting the same old problems wrapped up in a different package but keep on desiring a different outcome. Nothing seems to change.

When our overly, assertive, positive mind says, “Oh it was just not meant to be”. Know this is just a defense mechanism to make you feel better but ultimately keep you from living your dreams. We need to change our affirmation from frustration which makes us feel important. To spending time every day to reduce the noise in our minds after meditation and dream our dreams and affirm, “I will succeed. I have forever”.   When we put a time limit on our dreams we are setting ourselves up for the expected failure, or “I knew it would not work”, because once again being right is more important than being happy and complaints gain sympathy, again a short-term pleasure but not getting you to a place of joy.

This week let’s take the challenge of learning to develop patience, notice how your body is feeling at any point in the day and relax it. Feel joy in your heart, while being super alert to noticing all the sensory information coming in. If you want life to be different you need to change your thinking. Thoughts are a very subtle energy and our mind is the antenna constantly receiving and broadcasting this subtle energy. But what are we broadcasting? When our lives and behaviour become automatic, instinctual without conscious awareness, we are broadcasting our factory setting, default mode, etc. The factory setting of our mind is largely determined by genes and the environment we grew up in. For example what did your carers say about money, security, success, relationships? Do any of these statements sound familiar?

  • Life is hard/ Life is a Burden/ Life is Suffering
  • Money does Not grow on trees
  • People eventually disappoint you.
  • You cannot trust anyone.
  • Better to expect the worse than hope for the best.
  • Money is easy to spend difficult to make.

The predisposition of our mind can show us our automatic programming. This programming is generated from the sub conscious mind, therefore we are not always aware of it. Once we can become aware of this programming we can develop mental flexibility or neuroplasticity, to change that programming through the process of meditation and consciousness. In a meditative state ( if you are confused read last week’s blog) the observer observes the mind and its thought patterns, the observer then elevates the mind to the vastness of the universal Shuniya (stillness).

Practical Solutions

During your meditation notice what is the factory setting of your mind regarding the fundamental issues in your life. It could be, why I am not successful, why I am not prosperous, why I am not trusting, etc. Use acceptance of what is and gratitude to reprogram the default mode, i.e. feeling grateful for the 1 student who attended your class instead of being disappointed. This moves us away from broadcasting a constant message of need, fear and want, to feeling blessed, fulfilled and taken care of. My personal experience of this is that it can really start changing the reality of your life. It is not a miracle and may take time to work but with patience, trust and practice when you see a mental pattern that is not serving you and you want to break the cycle, a gratitude practice will work. The Buddhi Mind and why we Meditate?

We have worked a lot on the mind and in these final weeks before Sri Lankan New Year I wanted to clear up some concepts around meditation, concentration and relaxation. This is what we know so far:

  1. The mind is automatic and there is a lot being thought, processed in the sub, unconscious and conscious mind. But the key thing is that you recognise that YOU are not the one thinking; your MIND is the one thinking. You are the one observing a small portion of the thoughts the mind is having.
  2. The Mind loves contrast so it can create a blueprint for the mind. It likes polarities because they are helpful for classification, good/ bad, right/wrong. Pre established judgements of the world allow the brain to do less work, use less energy and be on a low power mode.
  3. You can affect your mind because it is actually very subtle matter. It can be affected by things like food, breathing, lifestyle, sound and energy.
  4. The point of meditation isn’t to shut it off the mind, it is always working. We meditate to both delete obsolete content that has been stored in the mind and pause in our identification with it.
  5. The only way to gain control of the mind to start serving you, is to use a technique that removes the self reference point, the I.   When we take our attention to the breath, body, mantra, an object etc, this concentration on something beyond the mind is like working a muscle. After the muscle is worked it relaxes more easily. This is the same as your mind, at one point during or after the focused meditation you will start to feel more relaxed and with regular practice start developing the Buddhi mind, which is intuitive, discerning and discriminates what is false and real.

The word meditation has become super trendy, people talk about beer meditation, cooking meditation, all sorts of times when they feel they are in a meditative state.   Feeling relaxed is one of the effects of meditation but it is not the only one. I discussed this with one of the wonderful teachers from the UK who were visiting us, Hari Karam.   Relaxation is essential in life, doing things you love and feeling relaxed but do not confuse it with meditation which is essentially concentration to unload the mind, relax it, make it intuitive and in higher states feel a merger with the Infinite.   This is very different to feeling relaxed after a glass of wine or TV show. The former puts you above thought, while the later puts you below thought.

So in summary we meditate to transcend the waves of the mind and become conscious of our sensory system. It allows us to see what is in our mind, why we are behaving as we do, so we know what is real and not. In higher forms it allows you to know the unknown (intuition) and see the unseen. So you can steer yourself through life, without reaction with GRACE.

Practical Solutions –The easiest way to meditate is through simple, seated breath, or mantra meditation. Just sit comfortably in a quiet place, straighten the spine, relax the body and slow your breath. Focus on your breath or on repeating a mantra. Keep your body still. Your mind will dump out a lot of thoughts from the subconscious, your may experience pain the in body. Watch them, they are not YOU. Just continue to sit still and continue to bring yourself back to your focus. Eventually the thoughts will become still and you will feel surrounded by comfort. Let the Mind Serve You – Kundalini Yoga 6.15pm Mon 26 March 2018

By thinking and thinking nothing happens! Train the mind to find the solution.

Letting go is one of the powerful ways we can learn to make our mind work for us and start to develop a real understanding and control of our mind. But the big one is when we are confronted by a real challenge in the moment. When this happens, can you stop your mind from blaming, feeling shame, thinking how it should have been, would have been, why me, I cannot cope, etc? This is the real test and it is one of the reasons we need challenge in our life to help us refine our mental reactions.

Yogi Bhajan tell us this, “If we can master the use and command of the mind, we can enjoy this world and live truthfully, gracefully and prosperously.”

The challenge is that often times we feel that the mind is beyond our reach and impact. The mind acts so fast we do not have the habit or chance to stop it reacting. This is why we need to make a clear relationship with the mind. i.e. realise my thoughts and/ or feelings are not me. My mind is under me so I do not need to react to it. Instead I assess the information the mind gives to me with my 3 functional minds and decide what action to take, based on what is the highest outcome or good in any given situation.

Practical Solutions –Here are some triggers for you to know your mind is reacting and you are under the mind:

  • Whenever you are subject to the mind you act and become inferior. You communicate to receive sympathy. You may say, “Why is this happening to me? I cannot help my feelings. I acting out of fear”.
  • Also when your negative mind says something to you, immediately it should be accompanied by the positive mind saying the polar opposite which is both assessed by the neutral mind. When this is not happening you know you are stuck in a mind loop.
  • Procrastination, thinking, talking, writing lists but not getting on and doing what is needed.
  • Resistance to what is occurring in the moment. Things not going the way you expect or want.

Yogi Bhajan gives us a really easy solution once we notice we are being triggered into reaction. If you can switch your dominant nostril breathing to the left, your mind will serve you. He says that the moment you start breathing through your left nostril your elementary self comes into to play and the totality of your mind becomes one, then the radiance will increase in your electromagnetic field and you will become very pleasant, positive instead of angry and reactive. Meditation to control your breathing and mind

Posture:Sit in Easy Pose with a straight spine.

Breath: Close off your right nostril with your right thumb and inhale deeply through your left nostril. Exhale completely through your mouth.

Time: Continue for 6 minutes.

To End: Inhale deeply, interlace your fingers and stretch them over your head palms up. Hold your breath for 10-15 seconds while you stretch your spine upward. Exhale and relax.

Synchronize your Brain – Kundalini Yoga Mon 12 Mar 6.15pm @ Prana Lounge

This week we become whole brain centric as we understand what the functions of the left and right hemispheres are and how we can make them work together to give us neuroplasticity or super brain thinking

When Albert Einstein’s brain was examined after death the only difference they found to a normal brain was the thickening of the tissue that interconnects the right and left brain hemispheres. Giving him a “Super Brain”.

The brain has right and left cerebral hemispheres which are divided by the longitudinal fissure. Both hemispheres have an outer grey matter and a cerebral cortex.  They have individual functions and can also function together. For example:

  • Linear reasoning functions of language such as grammar and word production are often controlled by the left hemisphere of the brain. In contrast, holistic functions of language such as intonation and emphasis are often controlled by the right hemisphere of the brain.
  • The right brain does not distinguish between past, present or future but the left brain cuts reality up to give us the past, present and future.
  • The left hemisphere is the elementary brain which releases memory of movement patterns.
  • The right brain controls your projection and has an independent identity from the left brain.

Practical Solutions

What this shows us is that we need the synchronization of both hemispheres at the same time to give us the ability to live and act with grace in these challenging times Balancing the hemispheres enables you to convert ideas into actions and to function as an integrated whole

The kriya and meditations we will be practicing this week will help to develop neuroplasticity. The use of mantra with the postures stimulates the central neural cavity in the brain to allow you to hear the inner voice of your soul.
