Applied Intelligence – Kundalini Yoga 5 Feb 6.15-7.30pm Prana Lounge

The Mind and Applied Intelligence

In January took at look at ourselves, our relationship with the self and how through the use of our own voice and sound we could be our truest, highest self. During the next few weeks I want to take us on a discovery of our minds. I want us to understand the mind, its function, its challenges and discover how to make it our best friend. In order to do this we need to clarify the relationship between ourselves and our mind.

What is intelligence?

We begin with a look at Intelligence. Intelligence is the ability to manifest the thoughts that we identify with and create clear intentions from. Intelligence is not the thoughts themselves, nor just the intellect, nor knowing something. It is the capacity to act on what we know and to evaluate quickly the result of our choices.

What is Applied intelligence?

Is the capacity of the mind to determine the thoughts we dwell on, the intentions we manifest and the actions we take. With applied intelligence you have subjective control to select and direct your thought projections.

wahaHow does it work?

Remember we talked about mantra, man being mind, tra being projection. When you can control your thought projections, you are said to have applied intelligence. This is not easy, but with patience and discipline it can be learnt.  The normal way of thinking is we attach to an idea, feeling, or belief that is just a stream of messages running through our mind as a result of internal and external stimulation. When we do not consciously understand this we let those random thoughts narrow our perception of what is, which slows our ability to learn and adapt to new environments. The key to appropriate development of intelligence is the power of non-attachment.  It is the capacity to select a strategy, from competing factions, that can get you to the goal. It is the higher form of the negative mind In this context, it is your ability to negate false learning and move quickly to a new insight and direction.  This week we will analyse the kinds of thoughts we are constantly having from the elevation and development of our neutral mind and focus on the projection we want have. What is your legacy for 2018 – Kundalini Yoga

legacy 1Last week we healed our insecurities and the barriers we had erected to dealing with the challenges of life by using the grace of god meditation. This week we think about legacy, the ability to have a selfless, infinite projection into everything we do in our lives. Legacy means the deeds and characteristics we will be remembered by. What would you like someone to say about how you lived your life and what lasting character you created when you die. Will you just leave money and property to your loved ones, or will they remember you for your kindness, tolerance, compassion. Think of any person you admire, for example what characteristic springs to mind when you think of Mother Theresa? Compassion. Selfless sacrifice? Martin Luther King, justice, equality? Gandhi, peaceful resistance?

Yogi Bhajan the Master of Kundalini Yoga, who came to serve humanity in the Aquarian Age, came to the West to share his legacy, the technology of Kundalini yoga. He came to establish a legacy not a lineage. It is our great blessing to have the guidance of our Spiritual Teacher, Yogi Bhajan, and the connection he gave us to Guru Ram Das and the Golden Chain. Yogi Bhajan transformed the traditional concept of a ‘spiritual lineage’ to one of a spiritual legacy. Historically, a spiritual master would pass his wisdom and lineage on to only one disciple or from the master to his son. Instead, Yogi Bhajan passed on the sacred technology of Kundalini Yoga and its legacy to all who would come to the energy of the Golden Chain as held by Guru Ram Das—the Raj Yogi and Guru who opened the doors to any seeker who would come.

Now spend a few moments thinking what type of legacy or characteristic you would like to focus on for 2018. When you walk into a room what is your energy going to be, a healer, innocent, purity; open, compassion? Hold that thought as many times as you can during the day to hold that energy and project it into your life and those who meet you. Be your legacy in 2018.

Laws of Attractiveness – Kundalini Yoga in Sri Lanka

attraction.png

Now we have started feeling deep acceptance of our polarities and paradoxes let’s get into the nitty, gritty of intimate relationships. Yogi Bhajan says this type of relationship is the highest kind of yoga because it pits you against conflict, paradox, polarity, challenge and asks you to call upon your conscious power over your mind to stay graceful, tolerant, compassionate and loving. Sound familiar?

But let’s look at what we are attracted to and how we become truly attractive?

We all have our theories about attraction – from fashion to passion, finding our soul mate to the need to fill our emotional holes. Are we attracted to people similar to ourselves or different? Is it their laugh or eye colour? Does Prince charming really exist?

The most powerful factor of attraction is none of the above. What we all find truly attractive is security. If a person exhibits a quality of self-love they are at their most attractive. It is typically when a person after a break up is feeling really good about themselves and is not looking for a relationship, that is when they attract someone. This sense of completeness and autonomy in yoga is call Saibhung.   We always will feel the need for someone to complete us this is the polarity of separation that the soul feels as it has been separated from the infinite. We need to use our applied intelligence to go beyond this polarity and feel whole, self fulfilled, self contained to serve in our intimate relationships instead of looking for our needs to be fulfilled by someone else.

Attraction is further complicated by the factors built into our instinctual programming, for example, take smell and symmetry. Smell is a powerful attractive factor. We immediately subconsciously recognise the smell of a potential mate that has genes which would be compatible to our having disease free, strong children.

Symmetry is another common attraction. We seek beauty and beauty is universally recognized as symmetry this factor also exists in the natural world.

harmony

The saying goes opposites attract. But we also like to share similarities in our partners. However we need enough of a difference to keep our relationship interesting. Differences create challenge, but if you do not try and fix your partner to make them like you, then you can face these polarities, stay conscious and remain flexible in your approach which lends to a healthy relationship.

So attraction is a complex blend of glandular, cerebral, social, genetic, karmic and spiritual. The only way to enjoy this and act with clarity is with applied intelligence where we use our consciousness and intuition to build and fulfil authentic relationships that are pleasing to our soul and its values.

The most important thing is not to be going into an intimate relationship with an itinerary of needs that have to be fulfilled by the other person. When people feel this insecurity it is very unattractive.

The best way to approach any relationship is when you are pre-fulfilled. You have everything you need. Begin with Oneness. This feeling of Saibhang can be developed through your daily practice of Kundalini yoga and meditation.

Next week let’s talk about how to sustain a loving, intimate relationship now you understand attraction. Sat nam Fi x sanasumainsrilanka.wordpress.com read our weekly blogs and brain candy updates raymond.fiona@gmail.com 0778011984

Elevate your Polarities to Live with Grace – Kundalini Yoga 6, Nov 6.15pm @ Prana Lounge

Wow, having just spent 10days together with amazing teachers Tonie Nooyens and Tien at Guava House participating at a Level 2 Authentic Relationship Retreat, I was amazed at facing the polarities and paradoxes of life immediately. I was left energised by dead tired at the same time.

This is a complicated topic so I am going to take 2 weeks in blogging about this one so stay with me!

Let’s look at definitions first. A polarity is an opposite that cannot exist without the other. We live in a world full of polarities like night and day, black and white, good and bad. In fact one of the reasons the world is in such conflict inside ourselves and out, is because we do not understand or handle our polarities.

We get narrow minded and feel that we can only have one view; we either have to Hate Trump or love him. We either have to eat, a clean, green, vegan diet to be a good person or eat junk food. There is no longer a middle ground we feel we can comfortable to occupy. These polarised views are damaging us.

The first mistake is to try and fight the polarity. If we destroy one side the other side will cease to exist. Every Wiseman is sometimes a fool. From the mouths of fools the greatest wisdom flows. In fact by focusing solely on one side of the picture, the balance shifts to give you more of what you do not want. For example when you are trying not to think of a scary thought, it increases your fear not decreases it. The second mistake is to take the average between the 2 polarities. For example look at a coalition government, most of the time they end up being totally ineffective as they end up compromising so much that neither do they get anything done or do they please the electorate or their respective parties.

We need to elevate the polarities and paradoxes in our personalities and outside ourselves on a diagonal path to become masters of ourselves. This is not another facade where we reduce the tensions between our conflicts and challenges by pretending everything is perfect, for example when a spiritualised person avoids inner conflict by saying, “What conflict, everything is ONE and heavenly”! This is a position that isolates, insulates, separates and denies reality. Where there is peace there is conflict, where there is heaven there is hell.

This week we will look at each polarity and see the lessons they can create for us in life and why they exist? Look at this quote and try and see the elevated or diagonal energy it gives to a polarity.

“When you deny something, actually you are accepting those things very deep in your subconscious mind, and sometimes when you accept something you are rejecting it in your subconscious mind so strongly even though you do not know it. So it is not by your acts alone that you approve or disapprove things. Your personality, which is a known personality can be known by acts, but your unknown personality is also there. Man is both unknown and known. Unknown is divine. Known is individual, however you are denying God. God is only denied because you say it is unknown. To know thyself is to know God. God is what? God is the totality, and when one knows the totality of one’s personality, one is GOD.” Teachings of Yogi Bhajan.

See you if you can understand why a polarity exists in your life. Next week we look more closely at paradox.

How to Deal with the Pressure Cooker of Life – Kundalini Yoga 6.15-7.30pm Mon 16 Oct @ Prana Lounge

anti stress yoga

Just as Yogi Bhajan predicted, now more than ever people need to know how to quickly and efficiently deal with the pressures of the times.

Since 2002 when I discovered Kundalini Yoga I have watched the pressures of our technological ages consume more and more of our fading attention span and vitality. The demands we are facing as human beings has exponentially increased with the development in technology. In this pressure cooker inflicting pressure, tension and friction on us something profound is also happening. Mainly a viral need for physical, emotional understanding and wellness on a deeper and deeper level.

Last week I was honoured to take part in a Hatha Yoga Teacher Training(YTT), to introduce the technology of Kundalini yoga, Chakras, Tattvas and the Gong. I was so impressed with the young ladies who are doing the training. For taking the chance to go deep, connect with themselves and their soul.   I joke that everyone now a days is a yoga teacher, but it makes me feel supremely happy as this is another sign of the change of the times. When I trained 15 years ago, my family thought I was nuts to turn in a good job as a lawyer to pursue teaching yoga, now it is common place.

From my experience what I have found is that Kundalini yoga kriyas and meditations are a quick and efficient way to release the stress and pressure of these times, more efficient than a cocktail or a movie. The pressure is not a bad thing. The pressure has made many look deep inside of themselves and ask the hard questions. Just like the girls on the YTT.

12096555_395166917356978_4905646554773778319_n

I feel personally this technology has given me a different perspective on life. A way that does not require me to follow a religion or rely on my teacher to initiate me. You can right here, right now in a very short time be connected to a deeper pulse of your life force which manifests in instant, peace, harmony, mental clarity, neutrality and wellness.

This is not some form of denial and fakism that pretends that there are no up and downs in life, gains and losses. But it does mean that I am training myself to use the now as a guide for joy, wisdom and learning to gain a greater understanding and experience of myself. This I was born to do. Join me all week as we practice kriyas and meditations to help you cope with the pressure and thrive.

Appreciate Yourself – Kundalini Yoga 6.15-7.30pm Mon 2 Oct 2017@Prana Lounge, Colombo 7

security

We often feel unappreciated. We do all these things for other people, but it feels like a thankless waste as no one’s acknowledges us. We expect something from the things we do, achieve, etc. But nobody acknowledges us? Well guess what the most important thing is to feel self appreciation for all you do. In my kids class when a child says, “Aunty, aunty look at me!”, I reply, “That is great but how do you feel? You do not need me to like what you are doing, you need to feel good about what you are doing.”

This is what Yogi Bhajan says about appreciation, “If you appreciate your life, if you appreciate your job, if you appreciate yourself, if you appreciate your surroundings—poor or rich, whatever they are—you are divine. The principle is that you are divine when you appreciate whatever you are. You must appreciate your job, no matter how dirty it is. You must appreciate your misery, no matter how painful it is. The moment you start appreciating misery it will run away. You don’t have to do anything. That’s why you all suffer. Misery doesn’t need appreciation. Misery needs to give you pain. The purpose of misery is to put you through pain. As soon as you start appreciating misery, its purpose is lost. How is misery going to be there?” The Universal consciousness is around and within us, if we can feel appreciation.

Last week I understood this concept. When I was going through a feeling of being really stuck, annoyed, off centre, frustrated, just for a moment I was able to break through and ask myself ok, there must be a lesson in this? Guru Singh’s punch line is, there so much fresh shit around, if I dig deep enough I will find the pony.

How are you going to tap into appreciation when your day falls apart when you are at your worst?

Practical Tips

Move away from the object of frustration, take a deep breath, go and have a shower or drink a cold class of water, or if you have time go for a swim, change the electromagnetic field of negativity around you. Refresh and reboot yourself. Say to yourself even though this is not going well, I appreciate myself and the situation. I will learn the lesson that comes out of this situation, even if I do not understand why this is happening. Do not try to engage your brain, it will only say that life is no fare, there is no justice and why it is happening to me? Drop your expectations of the situation and appreciate what is at the present moment.

Take your life off Autopilot- Kundalini Yoga 6.15pm Tuesday 26 Sept @ The Om Space

transitionWe have all experienced reading a few lines or in fact pages in a state of automatic pilot and not being able to recall any of it. This is our body’s clever way of saving fuel. Our conscious brain is a gas guzzling high powered machine when we concentrate, for example like learning a new language. To be more efficient our subconscious brain takes over, it looks at what we are experiencing now and sees if it looks familiar with a previous experience. If it does, it assumes that the experience is the same as yesterday and behaves in the same way. It creates a blue print of your daily life and feeds you this reality again and again. No wonder we feel bored, no wonder small kids say, “I know that Aunty”.

It is estimated that we spend 80% of our life on autopilot or subconscious pilot! This means that majority of life is habituated doing what we regularly do and not seeing the unique context of that moment as a separate time (fourth dimension) in three dimensional space.

Our life is lived in a dull blur. We resist the now and the new.

We need to override this autopilot. Each time you notice you are on autopilot, or the next time you take a drink of water, tea, etc. Take a slow deep breath in through your nose, hold the breath, exhale through the nose, smile and ask yourself, “what is needed now?” Because it is different to what was needed yesterday. Just by doing this you will have taken yourself off autopilot and switched on your high powered intuitive, brain. Enjoy, life is here to be experienced not thought about!

Make all your Relationships Authentic – 18 Sept 6.15-7.30pm Kundalini Yoga @ Prana Lounge, Colombo 7

We now know that our real soul mate is when we connect deeply with our spirit. Once we can feel our spirit, we can then start to bring that clear, real relationship we have with our self into relating with others.

IMG_4350

The problem is that our relationships with our friends, partners, colleagues, students, etc. are always in a state of change. They are very complex. We need to keep a clear relationship with ourselves so we can extend that out through our electromagnetic field when we deal with others.  This is called having an authentic relationship.  Relationships even ones filled with conflict we deal with through integrity, kindness, intuitive intelligence  and neutrally.  You always express love, your authenticity  and your soul,  as opposed to your projected fears and defences that are provoked during challenging circumstances.

authentic_relationships

Now think of a time in your life when you felt the most authentic and your core self? What do you look, sound and feel like? With whom do you feel you can be yourself without feeling judged? How do you recognise an authentic relationship verses an inauthentic one where you have something to gain from displaying particular behaviour.

Yogi bhajan says, “ Relationship is nothing but a totally extended experience of self”.

For me being authentic is saying what I mean and following through with my words.  I have had to start being more careful with how I relate to people through my speech. Not just saying empty words to fill the time , or making empty promises to please people. I strive to hold the relationship with myself  consciously, not to let myself down or anyone else down. To face relationships evening challenging ones with  love first over projected fears and defences that are provoked by circumstances and act neutrally, from my soul.

The Practice

One Minute Breath: Tune in with Ong Namo, Guru Dev Namo 3-5x. Sit with a straight spine. Inhale deeply for 20 seconds, hold for 20 seconds, exhale for 20 seconds. You may start with 10 seconds and build up.  Even if you do this for 3 mins it can really get you back in touch with the true, authentic self.

Soul Mate – The yogic science of relationships, 11 Sept 2017, 6.15-7.30pm @Prana Lounge

untitledOver the last few weeks we have talked about the mind, the frequency and going beyond the small I, to really connect with ourselves on a level which gives us the bigger picture of life. Let’s apply this to our relationships.

We all are lonely and also have a longing. A longing to form loving, intimate relationships with passionate, deep, connections, at every level in our life.  To understand this we need to examine, where does this longing or need come from? What is the reality or the Maya of these feelings?

The impulse to form relationships comes from our soul or spirit.  The spirit is longing to know itself.  We are not just longing for a relationship with someone else. We know, we can be in a crowded room full of people but still feel alone.  We are longing for a deep connection with ourselves, our soul. The soul is considered a thing, with a weight just less than 1 once. It is the barometer in us that gives us our purpose in life and makes us feel in harmony with existence.    This is why when you practice Kundalini Yoga and meditation you start to get this cosy and fulfilling feeling.  You do not even realise what it is, but you feel it. Just this feeling of deep connection with your heart beat, body and breath makes you feel really good.

The feelings you get when you connect to another person is similar, you are also trying to connect with that person’s soul.  That is why when you have a deep, fulfilling relationship, a merger with another person, you feel so good because once again it is allowing you to experience the infinite in them. It is when you go back to being your personality and they become their personality that there are conflicts again. If you can see yourself and them as soul, you can move beyond your need to fight and be right.

The Practice

This week sit with yourself and start to develop a real and beautiful relationship with yourself, not because of the things you have or the personality you are, just because you can feel your breath moving in and out of your nostrils, your heart beat, the feeling of air touching your skin, etc. Then connect to this subtle life force energy in nature, your partner, friends, family and colleagues.  See through their personalities, outside projections to the heart and soul which resides inside you and them.
