Seeing the world as it is not as we Are?

I read an interesting quote this week, “we see the world not as it is but as we are. A saint sees the world as a saint, a killer sees only murders or victims” by Neil Gaiman. I think we are all guilty of living in our mind. We talked about how the brain favours its blue print of the world, so we can live in low power mode. Therefore it does not have to experience reality as it is, new, fresh, for the first time. It quickly categorises experiences so we can place them in the correct pigeon hole and therefore not really experience the reality of what is. On the surface this seems like a simple solution so your brain can work on more pressing issues like your problems, worries, regrets etc. But in reality it stops you experiencing the wonder of life.   Every taste is stale not fresh and vibrant. Every birdsong goes unnoticed instead of being music to your ears.

The gap between seeing the world as we are, as oppose to, how it is, is suffering. In short, we just keep on getting the same old problems wrapped up in a different package but keep on desiring a different outcome. Nothing seems to change.

When our overly, assertive, positive mind says, “Oh it was just not meant to be”. Know this is just a defense mechanism to make you feel better but ultimately keep you from living your dreams. We need to change our affirmation from frustration which makes us feel important. To spending time every day to reduce the noise in our minds after meditation and dream our dreams and affirm, “I will succeed. I have forever”.   When we put a time limit on our dreams we are setting ourselves up for the expected failure, or “I knew it would not work”, because once again being right is more important than being happy and complaints gain sympathy, again a short-term pleasure but not getting you to a place of joy.

Practical Solutions

This week let’s take the challenge of learning to develop patience, notice how your body is feeling at any point in the day and relax it. Feel joy in your heart, while being super alert to noticing all the sensory information coming in. If you want life to be different you need to change your thinking. Thoughts are a very subtle energy and our mind is the antenna constantly receiving and broadcasting this subtle energy. But what are we broadcasting? When our lives and behaviour become automatic, instinctual without conscious awareness, we are broadcasting our factory setting, default mode, etc. The factory setting of our mind is largely determined by genes and the environment we grew up in. For example what did your carers say about money, security, success, relationships? Do any of these statements sound familiar?

  • Life is hard/ Life is a Burden/ Life is Suffering
  • Money does Not grow on trees
  • People eventually disappoint you.
  • You cannot trust anyone.
  • Better to expect the worse than hope for the best.
  • Money is easy to spend difficult to make.

The predisposition of our mind can show us our automatic programming. This programming is generated from the sub conscious mind, therefore we are not always aware of it. Once we can become aware of this programming we can develop mental flexibility or neuroplasticity, to change that programming through the process of meditation and consciousness. In a meditative state ( if you are confused read last week’s blog) the observer observes the mind and its thought patterns, the observer then elevates the mind to the vastness of the universal Shuniya (stillness).

Practical Solutions

During your meditation notice what is the factory setting of your mind regarding the fundamental issues in your life. It could be, why I am not successful, why I am not prosperous, why I am not trusting, etc. Use acceptance of what is and gratitude to reprogram the default mode, i.e. feeling grateful for the 1 student who attended your class instead of being disappointed. This moves us away from broadcasting a constant message of need, fear and want, to feeling blessed, fulfilled and taken care of. My personal experience of this is that it can really start changing the reality of your life. It is not a miracle and may take time to work but with patience, trust and practice when you see a mental pattern that is not serving you and you want to break the cycle, a gratitude practice will work. The Buddhi Mind and why we Meditate?

We have worked a lot on the mind and in these final weeks before Sri Lankan New Year I wanted to clear up some concepts around meditation, concentration and relaxation. This is what we know so far:

  1. The mind is automatic and there is a lot being thought, processed in the sub, unconscious and conscious mind. But the key thing is that you recognise that YOU are not the one thinking; your MIND is the one thinking. You are the one observing a small portion of the thoughts the mind is having.
  2. The Mind loves contrast so it can create a blueprint for the mind. It likes polarities because they are helpful for classification, good/ bad, right/wrong. Pre established judgements of the world allow the brain to do less work, use less energy and be on a low power mode.
  3. You can affect your mind because it is actually very subtle matter. It can be affected by things like food, breathing, lifestyle, sound and energy.
  4. The point of meditation isn’t to shut it off the mind, it is always working. We meditate to both delete obsolete content that has been stored in the mind and pause in our identification with it.
  5. The only way to gain control of the mind to start serving you, is to use a technique that removes the self reference point, the I.   When we take our attention to the breath, body, mantra, an object etc, this concentration on something beyond the mind is like working a muscle. After the muscle is worked it relaxes more easily. This is the same as your mind, at one point during or after the focused meditation you will start to feel more relaxed and with regular practice start developing the Buddhi mind, which is intuitive, discerning and discriminates what is false and real.

The word meditation has become super trendy, people talk about beer meditation, cooking meditation, all sorts of times when they feel they are in a meditative state.   Feeling relaxed is one of the effects of meditation but it is not the only one. I discussed this with one of the wonderful teachers from the UK who were visiting us, Hari Karam.   Relaxation is essential in life, doing things you love and feeling relaxed but do not confuse it with meditation which is essentially concentration to unload the mind, relax it, make it intuitive and in higher states feel a merger with the Infinite.   This is very different to feeling relaxed after a glass of wine or TV show. The former puts you above thought, while the later puts you below thought.

So in summary we meditate to transcend the waves of the mind and become conscious of our sensory system. It allows us to see what is in our mind, why we are behaving as we do, so we know what is real and not. In higher forms it allows you to know the unknown (intuition) and see the unseen. So you can steer yourself through life, without reaction with GRACE.

Practical Solutions –The easiest way to meditate is through simple, seated breath, or mantra meditation. Just sit comfortably in a quiet place, straighten the spine, relax the body and slow your breath. Focus on your breath or on repeating a mantra. Keep your body still. Your mind will dump out a lot of thoughts from the subconscious, your may experience pain the in body. Watch them, they are not YOU. Just continue to sit still and continue to bring yourself back to your focus. Eventually the thoughts will become still and you will feel surrounded by comfort. Let the Mind Serve You – Kundalini Yoga 6.15pm Mon 26 March 2018

By thinking and thinking nothing happens! Train the mind to find the solution.

Letting go is one of the powerful ways we can learn to make our mind work for us and start to develop a real understanding and control of our mind. But the big one is when we are confronted by a real challenge in the moment. When this happens, can you stop your mind from blaming, feeling shame, thinking how it should have been, would have been, why me, I cannot cope, etc? This is the real test and it is one of the reasons we need challenge in our life to help us refine our mental reactions.

Yogi Bhajan tell us this, “If we can master the use and command of the mind, we can enjoy this world and live truthfully, gracefully and prosperously.”

The challenge is that often times we feel that the mind is beyond our reach and impact. The mind acts so fast we do not have the habit or chance to stop it reacting. This is why we need to make a clear relationship with the mind. i.e. realise my thoughts and/ or feelings are not me. My mind is under me so I do not need to react to it. Instead I assess the information the mind gives to me with my 3 functional minds and decide what action to take, based on what is the highest outcome or good in any given situation.

Practical Solutions –Here are some triggers for you to know your mind is reacting and you are under the mind:

  • Whenever you are subject to the mind you act and become inferior. You communicate to receive sympathy. You may say, “Why is this happening to me? I cannot help my feelings. I acting out of fear”.
  • Also when your negative mind says something to you, immediately it should be accompanied by the positive mind saying the polar opposite which is both assessed by the neutral mind. When this is not happening you know you are stuck in a mind loop.
  • Procrastination, thinking, talking, writing lists but not getting on and doing what is needed.
  • Resistance to what is occurring in the moment. Things not going the way you expect or want.

Yogi Bhajan gives us a really easy solution once we notice we are being triggered into reaction. If you can switch your dominant nostril breathing to the left, your mind will serve you. He says that the moment you start breathing through your left nostril your elementary self comes into to play and the totality of your mind becomes one, then the radiance will increase in your electromagnetic field and you will become very pleasant, positive instead of angry and reactive. Meditation to control your breathing and mind

Posture:Sit in Easy Pose with a straight spine.

Breath: Close off your right nostril with your right thumb and inhale deeply through your left nostril. Exhale completely through your mouth.

Time: Continue for 6 minutes.

To End: Inhale deeply, interlace your fingers and stretch them over your head palms up. Hold your breath for 10-15 seconds while you stretch your spine upward. Exhale and relax.

Synchronize your Brain – Kundalini Yoga Mon 12 Mar 6.15pm @ Prana Lounge

This week we become whole brain centric as we understand what the functions of the left and right hemispheres are and how we can make them work together to give us neuroplasticity or super brain thinking

When Albert Einstein’s brain was examined after death the only difference they found to a normal brain was the thickening of the tissue that interconnects the right and left brain hemispheres. Giving him a “Super Brain”.

The brain has right and left cerebral hemispheres which are divided by the longitudinal fissure. Both hemispheres have an outer grey matter and a cerebral cortex.  They have individual functions and can also function together. For example:

  • Linear reasoning functions of language such as grammar and word production are often controlled by the left hemisphere of the brain. In contrast, holistic functions of language such as intonation and emphasis are often controlled by the right hemisphere of the brain.
  • The right brain does not distinguish between past, present or future but the left brain cuts reality up to give us the past, present and future.
  • The left hemisphere is the elementary brain which releases memory of movement patterns.
  • The right brain controls your projection and has an independent identity from the left brain.

Practical Solutions

What this shows us is that we need the synchronization of both hemispheres at the same time to give us the ability to live and act with grace in these challenging times Balancing the hemispheres enables you to convert ideas into actions and to function as an integrated whole

The use of mantra with the postures stimulates the central neural cavity in the brain to allow you to hear the inner voice of your soul. Applied Intelligence – Kundalini Yoga 5 Feb 6.15-7.30pm Prana Lounge

The Mind and Applied Intelligence

In January took at look at ourselves, our relationship with the self and how through the use of our own voice and sound we could be our truest, highest self. During the next few weeks I want to take us on a discovery of our minds. I want us to understand the mind, its function, its challenges and discover how to make it our best friend. In order to do this we need to clarify the relationship between ourselves and our mind.

What is intelligence?

We begin with a look at Intelligence. Intelligence is the ability to manifest the thoughts that we identify with and create clear intentions from. Intelligence is not the thoughts themselves, nor just the intellect, nor knowing something. It is the capacity to act on what we know and to evaluate quickly the result of our choices.

What is Applied intelligence?

Is the capacity of the mind to determine the thoughts we dwell on, the intentions we manifest and the actions we take. With applied intelligence you have subjective control to select and direct your thought projections.

wahaHow does it work?

Remember we talked about mantra, man being mind, tra being projection. When you can control your thought projections, you are said to have applied intelligence. This is not easy, but with patience and discipline it can be learnt.  The normal way of thinking is we attach to an idea, feeling, or belief that is just a stream of messages running through our mind as a result of internal and external stimulation. When we do not consciously understand this we let those random thoughts narrow our perception of what is, which slows our ability to learn and adapt to new environments. The key to appropriate development of intelligence is the power of non-attachment.  It is the capacity to select a strategy, from competing factions, that can get you to the goal. It is the higher form of the negative mind In this context, it is your ability to negate false learning and move quickly to a new insight and direction.  This week we will analyse the kinds of thoughts we are constantly having from the elevation and development of our neutral mind and focus on the projection we want have. What is your legacy for 2018 – Kundalini Yoga

legacy 1Last week we healed our insecurities and the barriers we had erected to dealing with the challenges of life by using the grace of god meditation. This week we think about legacy, the ability to have a selfless, infinite projection into everything we do in our lives. Legacy means the deeds and characteristics we will be remembered by. What would you like someone to say about how you lived your life and what lasting character you created when you die. Will you just leave money and property to your loved ones, or will they remember you for your kindness, tolerance, compassion. Think of any person you admire, for example what characteristic springs to mind when you think of Mother Theresa? Compassion. Selfless sacrifice? Martin Luther King, justice, equality? Gandhi, peaceful resistance?

Yogi Bhajan the Master of Kundalini Yoga, who came to serve humanity in the Aquarian Age, came to the West to share his legacy, the technology of Kundalini yoga. He came to establish a legacy not a lineage. It is our great blessing to have the guidance of our Spiritual Teacher, Yogi Bhajan, and the connection he gave us to Guru Ram Das and the Golden Chain. Yogi Bhajan transformed the traditional concept of a ‘spiritual lineage’ to one of a spiritual legacy. Historically, a spiritual master would pass his wisdom and lineage on to only one disciple or from the master to his son. Instead, Yogi Bhajan passed on the sacred technology of Kundalini Yoga and its legacy to all who would come to the energy of the Golden Chain as held by Guru Ram Das—the Raj Yogi and Guru who opened the doors to any seeker who would come.

Now spend a few moments thinking what type of legacy or characteristic you would like to focus on for 2018. When you walk into a room what is your energy going to be, a healer, innocent, purity; open, compassion? Hold that thought as many times as you can during the day to hold that energy and project it into your life and those who meet you. Be your legacy in 2018.

Laws of Attractiveness – Kundalini Yoga in Sri Lanka

Now we have started feeling deep acceptance of our polarities and paradoxes let’s get into the nitty, gritty of intimate relationships. Yogi Bhajan says this type of relationship is the highest kind of yoga because it pits you against conflict, paradox, polarity, challenge and asks you to call upon your conscious power over your mind to stay graceful, tolerant, compassionate and loving. Sound familiar?

But let’s look at what we are attracted to and how we become truly attractive?

We all have our theories about attraction – from fashion to passion, finding our soul mate to the need to fill our emotional holes. Are we attracted to people similar to ourselves or different? Is it their laugh or eye colour? Does Prince charming really exist?

The most powerful factor of attraction is none of the above. What we all find truly attractive is security. If a person exhibits a quality of self-love they are at their most attractive. It is typically when a person after a break up is feeling really good about themselves and is not looking for a relationship, that is when they attract someone. This sense of completeness and autonomy in yoga is call Saibhung.   We always will feel the need for someone to complete us this is the polarity of separation that the soul feels as it has been separated from the infinite. We need to use our applied intelligence to go beyond this polarity and feel whole, self fulfilled, self contained to serve in our intimate relationships instead of looking for our needs to be fulfilled by someone else.

Attraction is further complicated by the factors built into our instinctual programming, for example, take smell and symmetry. Smell is a powerful attractive factor. We immediately subconsciously recognise the smell of a potential mate that has genes which would be compatible to our having disease free, strong children.

Symmetry is another common attraction. We seek beauty and beauty is universally recognized as symmetry this factor also exists in the natural world.

The saying goes opposites attract. But we also like to share similarities in our partners. However we need enough of a difference to keep our relationship interesting. Differences create challenge, but if you do not try and fix your partner to make them like you, then you can face these polarities, stay conscious and remain flexible in your approach which lends to a healthy relationship.

So attraction is a complex blend of glandular, cerebral, social, genetic, karmic and spiritual. The only way to enjoy this and act with clarity is with applied intelligence where we use our consciousness and intuition to build and fulfil authentic relationships that are pleasing to our soul and its values.

The most important thing is not to be going into an intimate relationship with an itinerary of needs that have to be fulfilled by the other person. When people feel this insecurity it is very unattractive.

The best way to approach any relationship is when you are pre-fulfilled. You have everything you need. Begin with Oneness. This feeling of Saibhang can be developed through your daily practice of Kundalini yoga and meditation.

Elevate your Polarities to Live with Grace – Kundalini Yoga 6, Nov 6.15pm @ Prana Lounge

Wow, having just spent 10days together with amazing teachers Tonie Nooyens and Tien at Guava House participating at a Level 2 Authentic Relationship Retreat, I was amazed at facing the polarities and paradoxes of life immediately. I was left energised by dead tired at the same time.

This is a complicated topic so I am going to take 2 weeks in blogging about this one so stay with me!

Let’s look at definitions first. A polarity is an opposite that cannot exist without the other. We live in a world full of polarities like night and day, black and white, good and bad. In fact one of the reasons the world is in such conflict inside ourselves and out, is because we do not understand or handle our polarities.

We get narrow minded and feel that we can only have one view; we either have to Hate Trump or love him. We either have to eat, a clean, green, vegan diet to be a good person or eat junk food. There is no longer a middle ground we feel we can comfortable to occupy. These polarised views are damaging us.

The first mistake is to try and fight the polarity. If we destroy one side the other side will cease to exist. Every Wiseman is sometimes a fool. From the mouths of fools the greatest wisdom flows. In fact by focusing solely on one side of the picture, the balance shifts to give you more of what you do not want. For example when you are trying not to think of a scary thought, it increases your fear not decreases it. The second mistake is to take the average between the 2 polarities. For example look at a coalition government, most of the time they end up being totally ineffective as they end up compromising so much that neither do they get anything done or do they please the electorate or their respective parties.

We need to elevate the polarities and paradoxes in our personalities and outside ourselves on a diagonal path to become masters of ourselves. This is not another facade where we reduce the tensions between our conflicts and challenges by pretending everything is perfect, for example when a spiritualised person avoids inner conflict by saying, “What conflict, everything is ONE and heavenly”! This is a position that isolates, insulates, separates and denies reality. Where there is peace there is conflict, where there is heaven there is hell.

This week we will look at each polarity and see the lessons they can create for us in life and why they exist? Look at this quote and try and see the elevated or diagonal energy it gives to a polarity.

“When you deny something, actually you are accepting those things very deep in your subconscious mind, and sometimes when you accept something you are rejecting it in your subconscious mind so strongly even though you do not know it. So it is not by your acts alone that you approve or disapprove things. Your personality, which is a known personality can be known by acts, but your unknown personality is also there. Man is both unknown and known. Unknown is divine. Known is individual, however you are denying God. God is only denied because you say it is unknown. To know thyself is to know God. God is what? God is the totality, and when one knows the totality of one’s personality, one is GOD.” Teachings of Yogi Bhajan.
