Heart Coherence and Kundalini Yoga

Heart, Brain Coherence – Kundalini Yoga

Are we sick of the word vagus nerve yet?  What is happening to Kundalini yoga is that we are developing evidence and research based confirmation of what yogic scriptures have said thousands of years ago.

I learnt this week that our vagus nerve is like the central string of an instrument and when it is in tune all other parts of us come into harmony. We can use this information to heal ourselves.

What does this mean?

One of the main functions of the vagus nerve (10th cranial nerve that wonders throughout the body and into organs) is to connect the sinoatrial node in our heart which acts like a spark plug to signal the autonomic nervous system and the old brain/subconscious brain to monitor our state of emotional, mental and physical wellbeing. This is called cardiac vagal tone.

In fact cardiac vagal tone is so important that medical science has developed a cardiac vagal tone pace maker.   It is attached to the sinoatrial node which artificially controls the Heart Rate Variability (HRV) and is inplanted to help reduce epilepsy and cases of severe depression.

Solutions – We can Help Ourselves

Our heart and our HRV has a big part to play in our physical, mental and emotional health, as it sends information about how we are to our autonomic nervous system. Yogi Bhajan tells us, “ Every beat of your heart is the rhythm of your soul and the voice of your soul is your breath”.

This does not just mean a physically healthy heart or HRV, because as we have been learning our organs are also effected very deeply by how we feel and think.

It means we need to be more heart centred, do things with all our heart, use the 40,000 neurons (brain cells) in our heart, as our heart brain. Just image when you do something with all your heart, your energy become like a laser beam, it creates coherence and therefore it is more focussed, stronger, has greater effect and reach.   When we do something half heartedly, we are in two minds. Our energy becomes disbursed like a light bulb giving a little light to a small area, little coherence, focus or effect.

This does not mean that you let people walk all over you and be a bleeding heart, spiritual bypass difficult situations, etc. As this is not serving your heart or anyone else, it is serving your ego.

I first encountered this feeling of coherence when I did 21 Stages of Meditation in 2013 in Thailand. For the first time during and after meditation I really noticed my heart beat, I had no thoughts, just a feeling of connection and ease. This created such emotions of well being that when I met German and travelled around Thailand on a short holiday my patterns of behaviour, relating to him and our relationship were changed for the better.

So this week we will be practicing a range of techniques that yogis have known for thousands of years to put ourselves in a heart centred space of healing, wellness and coherence. Sat nam x

Healing, Celestial Communication – Kundalini Yoga 18 May

Healing through Celestial Communication – Kundalini Yoga 18 May

We combine the prana and mantra themes we have been using over the last two weeks, to heal ourselves through what Yogi Bhajan named celestial communication.

We all know the amount of stress; physical and emotional this period of time has generated.  Whether you are worried about your finances, family or personal health. Literally 2020 (2+0+2+0) is a 4 year and the negative polarity is loneliness & disconnection. Our teacher was a visionary and could see that this stressful and alienating time would need something special that was accessible by everyone, all ages, all physical conditions and backgrounds so he shared the technology of Celestial Communication—meditative body language and music.

“I want to show you how much pranic energy you can feel in the heart center. I know this works. You have to use the body and the being as the instrument of the music. And sing with your tongue. Then you can create a vibratory effect.

Try to understand the basic meaning of what you do with Celestial Communication. The word is ‘kirtan.’ ‘Kir’ means ‘the hand’; ‘tan’ means ‘the body.’ When the hands and body meet, then internal music is created.

Let your body become the instrument. And pavan, the prana, becomes your projection and feelings. Celestial Communication is extremely effective in every part of your being.”When you master Celestial Communication, all the feelings of stress and trauma are filtered through a somatic story (i.e. your physical body) and transform into new and meaningful insights and understanding.

The power and possibility of this process is in our bones—ancient tribes gathered and told stories with body language, music, sacred sound and ceremonial movements. Expressing, awakening, healing and connecting with a sangat—a community—is an ancient and time-tested prescription for wholeness.

It relaxes the tense parts of the brain through the nerve connections in the tips of the fingers, tongue and upper palate, which are the main active parts, and the meridians.

The tension in the neural patterns is relieved into a relaxed pattern of its own originality. It is a very fantastic release. Physical relaxation is not as important as the systematic relaxation of nerves and self are. That’s why the Celestial Communication system will work wonders with all people, from all religions and places. It is a methodology which gives you a tremendous amount of relief in your inner being.”
During our everyday emotions and flashes of memory steal away our mental and emotional energy, our prana, from the present reality. In this practice, as you give your mind and your body to the conscious music through simple arm movements and breath, the music gives you back to your Self—simple, joyous and creative.

In my personal experience this is why this method works so well with kids including with special needs. Sat nam x raymond.fiona@gmail.com   0778011984 www.sanasuma.co.uk www.3ho.org

Regrets, Should have… Kundalini Yoga 19 April 2020

Regrets, Should haves – Kundalini Yoga 19 April 2020

As curfew eases in Sri Lanka and we start to return to normal, you may suddenly be faced with regrets. A little voice in your head that says you should have used your time more usefully, learning a new language, new hobby, being more present with family, doing more yoga, etc.

what-is-kundalini-meditation-4688618-9faf3f2cf6b2482a815f0b15a71a14b6

Psychologists refer to this process in which we evaluate how we should have done something differently as “counterfactual”. It is a mental mechanism with creates, regret, disappointment, self judgement and low self esteem. But is meant to help us learn from our mistakes.

On the other hand we may also feel a slave to our to do list and only feel good when we are on the tread mill of getting things done. How do we find a balance between the treadmill of life and regret?

Instead of waking up for my practice because I have to, lets bring conscious awareness into it. Insert I choose, (intention) to wake up early, I could stay in bed, but I know that doing my practice makes me feel really good and balanced for the day. Choosing is liberating we are acting to serve our own best interests aligning our inner self with our actions, instead of doing things automatically, unconsciously and resentfully. This small conscious word makes a huge difference. Make a list of all the mundane things you do regularly and write next to each one what are the benefits of completing the task.

imagesMLQN1HF6

When it comes to big regrets, the career you never pursued, the property you did not buy, the language you never learned, etc. You first need to work out if you still have this unfilled passion or if you wanted to do that thing to impress someone or look good? Think about this after your kundalini yoga and meditation class. Your mind will be very calm and intuitive. Then if the dream still feels unfulfilled try to do something in your life to move towards this goal. If you always wanted to play an instrument watch a YouTube video on it. Maybe learn the musical scale, doing a little towards your dreams releases you from your nagging voice of regret.

Change your energy state- Kundalini Yoga Retreats 18-20 May Amba Estate

Last week we worked on the Pranic cavity under the 8 vertebrae which is one of the store houses for our pranic energy.  We needed to get our energy back after the disturbing, unbalancing effect of collective grief, outrage, fear and pain we suffered as community in Sri Lanka.  This week we learn how to alter this pranic energy to create the effect we need at any given time.

This is what Yogi Bhajan has to say: “You have to learn to alter your energy. If at one frequency you are freaking out, change or alter your energy. You will not freak out.  You cannot change the time, but you can change the place. You cannot get out of your body but you can change its energy.  If the right nostril is sending fire (Agni) energy and you are thinking something very neurotic, start breathing from the left nostril. It will send the cooling sitalee energy.  If you are irritated, very depressed, in a most weird mental state, start breathing from the right nostril. Within 3 minutes after you shift the nostril, you will be in a different mental state.  The ability to change nostrils in breathing should be taught to your children within the first 3 years.”

We will practice the meditation to show you how to alter your energy state at your command.

Stress Antidote Parasympathetic Nervous System – Kundalini Yoga 17 Sept, 6.15pm @ Prana Lounge.

38674396_452141915303215_8697543820780240896_o

Parasympathetic nervous system a stress antidote.

The parasympathetic nervous system is the calming half of the autonomic (i.e. automatic) nervous system. It is the ability to calmly see with awareness and find the solution even when you feel really challenged. It is the break peddle of the vehicle of your body. If allows you to deeply relax, rejuvenate and regenerate. The parasympathetic nervous system is ruled by sound, therefore that is why Gong or mantra is so powerful to stimulate it.

The sympathetic nervous system is your alarm, it is the alertness of being on edge It is governed by sight as opposed to sound. It is your gas pedal in the vehicle of your body. We overly use our sympathetic nervous system; we have not found the off button. In today’s stressful lives more than ever it produces chronic stress which affects our health. The over production of adrenaline and cortisol leads to auto immune dysfunctions such as:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis. …
  • Systemic lupus erythematosus (lupus). …
  • Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). …
  • Multiple sclerosis (MS). …
  • Type 1 diabetes mellitus. …
  • Psoriasis.

Just to list a few. The wonderful thing is we have yogic tools and technologies that allow us to reduce the sympathetic nervous system response by stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system. A study reported by International Journal of Basic and Applied Medical Sciences ISSN: 2277-2103 (Online) An Online International Journal Available at http://www.cibtech.org/jms.htm 2011 Vol. 1 (1) September-December, pp.144-148/Kiran et al.concluded that , meditative lifestyle is specifically associated with better mental health scores. The autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity is affected by meditation. While comparing ANS activity of mediators and non mediators of each group separately, they concluded that there is an increase in parasympathetic activity, but the sympathetic activity was less in mediators.

Let’s practice sound healing and meditation on a daily basis to bring our autonomic nervous system back into balance. Sat nam Fi x sanasumainsrilanka.wordpress.com read our weekly blogs and brain candy updatesraymond.fiona@gmail.comwww.sanasuma.co.uk0778011984.

What Kundalini Yoga Awakens?- Monday 27 August 6.15pm Prana Lounge, Colombo 7

What Kundalini Awakens?

I get a lot of students asking me so What is Kundalini Yoga and what does it awaken? My experience is that many people misunderstand what Kundalini is, they think it is just a sexual energy, maybe something that will give them powers?. It is a vast concept! Yogi Bhajans reply when asked if Kundalini was dangerous, his answer was, Yes, Kundalini is dangerous. If someone has awakened Kundalini energy you cannot lie to that person, you cannot cheat that person, you cannot dominate that person. It is the energy, supreme energy of the human being, the problem is not Kundalini awakening but a person spending their life with it unawakened. The job of the human being is to awaken to what you really are.

If human organism or vehicle you operate is dominated by the lower energy centres, the person will operate from a perspective of density.   What is real and most valuable for that persons will be the material realm. As we know from our weeks working on Happiness, our happiness is not influenced by our material wealth.   This focus will constrict the Kundalini energy in the lower triangle and will not be feeding the higher chakras.

When you start to have a kundlini experience you start to understand what you really are. What created you, that is the process of Kundalini Yoga . Beyond your gender, your race, your bank account, you learn to concentrate on what is in the nucleus of you, what you really are, spirit. In order to feel this subtle shift, you need to purify the blood stream, purify the density of the body and so that the pituitary gland can secrete into the blood stream to create a conducive environment to awaken your consciousness. That person has a different type of brightness coming out of their eyes. What they really are in coming out through the instrument of the body. That is what makes you a magnetic presence and that transmit to all that see you.  You are in love with life and it overflows into everything you do. You become you, genuine you, guided by your intuition. It is a potent and profound path and needs hard work, discipline and determination but you will see the results when you start to awaken.

Appreciate Yourself – Kundalini Yoga 6.15-7.30pm Mon 2 Oct 2017@Prana Lounge, Colombo 7

security

We often feel unappreciated. We do all these things for other people, but it feels like a thankless waste as no one’s acknowledges us. We expect something from the things we do, achieve, etc. But nobody acknowledges us? Well guess what the most important thing is to feel self appreciation for all you do. In my kids class when a child says, “Aunty, aunty look at me!”, I reply, “That is great but how do you feel? You do not need me to like what you are doing, you need to feel good about what you are doing.”

This is what Yogi Bhajan says about appreciation, “If you appreciate your life, if you appreciate your job, if you appreciate yourself, if you appreciate your surroundings—poor or rich, whatever they are—you are divine. The principle is that you are divine when you appreciate whatever you are. You must appreciate your job, no matter how dirty it is. You must appreciate your misery, no matter how painful it is. The moment you start appreciating misery it will run away. You don’t have to do anything. That’s why you all suffer. Misery doesn’t need appreciation. Misery needs to give you pain. The purpose of misery is to put you through pain. As soon as you start appreciating misery, its purpose is lost. How is misery going to be there?” The Universal consciousness is around and within us, if we can feel appreciation.

Last week I understood this concept. When I was going through a feeling of being really stuck, annoyed, off centre, frustrated, just for a moment I was able to break through and ask myself ok, there must be a lesson in this? Guru Singh’s punch line is, there so much fresh shit around, if I dig deep enough I will find the pony.

How are you going to tap into appreciation when your day falls apart when you are at your worst?

Practical Tips

Move away from the object of frustration, take a deep breath, go and have a shower or drink a cold class of water, or if you have time go for a swim, change the electromagnetic field of negativity around you. Refresh and reboot yourself. Say to yourself even though this is not going well, I appreciate myself and the situation. I will learn the lesson that comes out of this situation, even if I do not understand why this is happening. Do not try to engage your brain, it will only say that life is no fare, there is no justice and why it is happening to me? Drop your expectations of the situation and appreciate what is at the present moment.

Sadhana – Invest in your Wellbeing

kundalini-yoga-sadhana-flickr-sharing-218170There is no gain without effort, therefore creating the habit of Sadhana (spiritual disciplined practice) in your life is a worthy investment in your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing.

Sadhana can be defined as, whatever you do consistently to awaken your consciousness so that you can relate your higher self. To cover all aspects, it will include some form of yoga or exercise and meditation. You can do it on your own or in the group. The best time to practice is in the Amrit Vela which is 2 hours before sunrise or sunset 4-7am or 4-7pm daily.

When I thought about writing about Sadhana, I wanted to give you an idea of what my motivation is to do a daily spiritual practice as well as group Sadhana.

On many fronts, I would say that before I began practicing Kundalini Yoga and doing a daily practice, I found it very hard to motivate myself, especially when it came to physical exercise and meditation. I am one of those soft people, who loves comfort, cosiness and really lazing around. I had not really nurtured discipline in my life, especially the physical or emotional sort. I was very self-absorbed and believed my internal mental dialog. I had quite a shock when I realised that I was indeed not my mind or emotions and that the clarity of the real me, was buried deep down under a ton of pre-conceived ideas most of which were not even my own.

Sadhana began as a chore for me. I got bored by my practice, used it to daydream about other things but keep on just doing it. Very slowly it started to work, very subtly without even my conscious knowledge.

When you start a consistent Sadhana practice be prepared for many subconscious blocks to challenge you and prevent you from keeping up a daily practice. Whether it be, not being able to sleep the night before, feeling sick, running late, family problems or just your alarm not going off. But as you build up your will power to overcome your mental and physical excuses it becomes easier to become more committed to yourself. Your mind becomes clearer as subconscious fears and unhealthy patterns that normally hold you in their grip are released. Doubt is released and your mind becomes sure. You become clear and start feeling more joy, being able to deal neutrally with fears and anxieties as they arise, as you have started the day by tuning your body, mind instrument to start reflecting that inner radiance in you.

This is my motivation for doing a daily and group Sadhana, I feel the benefits of having greater mental clarity to see what is real and what is just an illusion created by my mind. I am able to see my emotional patterns especially the unhealthy ones. This manifests in my new-found ability not to automatically speak my mind, which may create drama or karma, instead watch my mind and not react to its internal dialog.

I know I have a long way to go but by keeping up almost an uninterrupted practice for the last 14 years, I really see the benefits in my life. So, my challenge to you is, try it, keep going for 1 year and if you see no benefits stop. If you do feel better continue. Keep your motivation in mind when you feel tired, or angry you have to do your practice last thing at night. Remember sadhana clears the subconscious shadows, the automatic patterns of behaviour that make you feel bad or guilty after reacting to a situation. Try coming to a group Sadhana, I lead one once a week every Wed 5-7.30am 9 Greenlands Lane, Col 5, just sms to confirm you are coming or attend the first Saturday of the month at The Om Space.

Yogic Science, the Ten Bodies – Kundalini Yoga

10bodies

Life just synchronises sometimes, because as I write this we are on day 2 of Kundalini Yoga Teacher Training Level 1 and tomorrow morning Tonie Nooyens our Lead Teacher trainer in Asia will be leading a Sadhana and Kriya called the 10 bodies which correspondence with this post.

I met a man this summer at Solstice in who told me the story of how Yogi Bhajan managed to get the technology of the 10 Bodies. The story goes that he tracked down a yogi who had spent his life mastering the technology but refused to pass on the knowledge. He said he would take it to his grave. Then Yogi Bhajan said prepare to die, because it is no use having this knowledge if you do not want share it with humanity. Eventually he reluctantly gave it to him.

Throughout the ages the importance of dates, including our date of birth has been revered by many cultures. Tantric numerology is a technology that uses numbers and significant dates to establish and understanding our strengths and weaknesses. Once you understand these its gives you a plan and guidelines on how to improve the areas of weakness and utilise your strengths.

The system Yogi Bhajan uses reduces every number above 11 and relates it to one of our 10 bodies plus 11th the number called embodiment. The numbers relate to the journey of our soul from its essence as it moves from the grosser forms of existence the physical body, to the conscious forces of thought, through the more esoteric frequencies of electromagnetic field.

1 The number of the soul as it emerges from the infinite.

2 Once the soul emerges from the infinite, it gets surrounded by thought. Which comprises of the 3 functional minds. The first being the negative mind.

3 The positive mind

4 The neutral mind

5 The soul and mind find expression in the physical body.

6 The soul, mind and physical body needs guidance which comes from the clarity of the arc line.

7 The aura is the flow of electromagnetic energy within and around the physical body. It interconnects with the 7th chakra and is the space through which we hold and release our past experiences.

8 The pranic body fills us with energy and which fuels our spiritual growth.

9 The subtle body is the vehicle which allows us to understand the subtle flow of energies in the world.

10 The Radiant body finds radiance in all the other bodies.

11 the Embodiment is the point from which the soul and radiant body unite. A union between heaven and earth.

Just as last week we used the addition of the numbers for this year 2017 to give us meaning and direction for our energies. You can do the same with your birth date, the day of the week, to give yourself a sense of direction and guidance. You can read more about this technology from the following website and the master of Numerology Shiv Charan Singh http://www.karamkriya.com.

Master Yourself in 2017, the year of Radiance

I innately knew and my body was preparing in November for 2017 (2+0+1+7 = 10) a number 10 year, of Mastery or self-illumination.

The tradition of tantric numerology, the kundalini yogic science of numbers was transmitted to Yogi Bhajan by a yogi who had made a life study of this technology. Essentially it is the frequency of the soul as it travels through life’s journey in its various energetic frequencies. I will write a longer blog next week all about Tantric numerology.

The number 10 in this system depicts the subtle energy of the Radiant Body, the Body of Light. It is the light of the soul shining through the transparent ego. A protective radiance which will dissolve attacking projections, at the auric level of your being. The polarity of the Radiant Body is that this circle of protection can become suffocating, oppressive and can prevent you from stepping into your mastery and excellence. Instead of a Master you feel a Fraud. It is time to recognise you are the light and that you can be the change you want to see.

In 2017 we get to really see what we are made of, we either commit to the sacredness of our own divinity, individuality and courage, in celebration and mastery of the illuminated self where the finite No one’s power is magnified by the 0, or the one turns inwards and we fall into loneliness, feeling like an outsider, fearful and isolated.

Having read a lot about 2017, from it being the year of mastering the emotional self, to the new wave of nootropics, a buzz word for biohacking, which is getting the best out of your brain and body, by using drugs and self-stimulants. I feel by going deep and developing a better understanding of yourself, your needs physically and emotionally, through self-care, we will really become the master of ourselves.

On a practical note, stretching into your body everyday no matter what method this is, some form of yoga, swimming, stretch class, etc. Bringing your conscious awareness to your breath, eating, waking, walking, typing, etc. Spending time chanting, singing, listening to your own words, internal and external, will help attune your senses to become more sensitive to YOU, and your needs. This in turn will allow you to understand what food serves and nourishes you. Not what someone else tells you in a magazine or the latest fashion but how do I feel when I eat this? Bloated, windy, heavy, light, fresh nourished? Spend time asking yourself these questions, about everything in your life.

Stop the judgement. This is year is about altitude, seeing the whole picture from above not narrow minded judgement. Decide to discern what suites you best and do not pass judgement on what suites someone else, even if they are your child, grandchild, parent or partner.

This year you need to see or recognise the problem, challenge or block in your life, stop condemning or blaming and know that the problem is there to guide you. Come to a point of stillness and clarity and become the solution to your problem.

If you want more peace, be more peaceful and kind to everyone around you. If you want more prosperity, be more generous without wanting anything in return, even good karma. Be the change you want to see in the world and then you will not need to spend endless time worrying, blaming or condemning all that is in existence at this time. Then, this year will bring you genuine joy and you will be the master of yourself and all you pervade.

Thanks to all my teachers, Sunder Singh, Shiv Charan Singh, Guru Singh and my family the greatest teachers of them all.
