Vesak retreat - final

As we grieve and suffer on this small Island of Sri Lanka for the dead and injured  in last week’s attack, we still as yogis keep compassion and hope in our heart.

As we move into May this week after a long, slow April full of holidays and horrors. Shiv Charan encourages us to tune into the lessons being learnt through our 5 senses and 5 elements (earth, water, fire, air & ether) that gives our body the experience of life. The body becomes the divine temple.  Let’s connect deeply with the body in the physical experience of it, whilst still keeping connected to the inner experience of self. The mantra of this month can be KARTA PURKH which means creative being.  Create the harmony of daily life with spiritual existence. Between action and stillness.

Practical Tips

This you can do by having a strong practice this month, it is needed as well as deep meditations that take you to a still place.  Your words are also very important this month so think before you speak.  Use your words and voice as inspiration. Read poetry. Chant your words into your food as you cook and then invite your loved ones to share a meal with you.

Retreat? Why do we Go on Them? Kundalini Yoga 6.15pm Mon 25 June@ Prana Lounge, Col 7

What is a Retreat? And Why do we go on Them?

As the Kundalini yoga community gets ready to go on Retreat this week,( sorry in advance to students who are not coming and will have a lack of teachers), I thought I would blog about what going on Retreat is and why I look forward to this practice as many times as I can manage it in a year.

The definition of Retreat, is to withdraw. But in the spiritual sense we go on Retreat to withdraw from our everyday life and routine towards our spiritual touch stone. To leave our technological filled world behind and spend some me time, learning, connecting with new and old friends, teachers and most of all our spirit.

For me personally going on Retreat is a time for me to tap into my own deep wisdom, to listen to the quite voice within and have insights into my life, routines, relationships, mind, habits, etc.   At the same time you Retreat to be alone and have an inner experience, even though you are in a group or community. You have personal insights and OMG moments but also feel the shared experience of the group that makes you feel cosy, relaxed and supported. After a Retreat I usually feel as if I have hit the refresh button, I have more energy, my body feels great and my mind feels clear.

Practical Solutions

So how about all of you who are not going on Retreat? You can still have the experience of a Retreat. One day a week or half day I retreat, I try not to use technology, I switch off, withdraw from the outside world and have retreat time. Whether it is attending a yoga class by myself, reading a book, magazine, taking a nap, swimming or watching my favourite movie. Learning to love your own company and spend alone time is very important to counter balance the pressures of life. So this week let’s make each class a special time for you to retreat and connect deeply with that inner you, reflect on your year so far, feel gratitude for what you have and have done.
