The Anatomy of Depression – Kundalini Yoga and Meditation Tues 11 April 6-7pm@ The Om Space, Col 5

mindfulnessHaving completed 5 days of a deep, detox and spending time rejuvenating myself from within. This week we will focus on opening up to life especially through the breath and understanding the anatomy of depression or negative feelings.

Yogi Bhanjan says that depression is a symptom of shallow breathing and locked pelvic area. He says that people are mistaken in thinking depression and negativity are a result of mood or circumstance. He encourages people to do a heavy breath from the navel point to move negativity or depression very fast.

Practical Tip

Try lots of deep breathing starting from the pelvic floor and breath of fire this week, to counter any negativity in your thoughts and emotions. Start with 3mins daily, but if possible extend this up to 31 mins.

Joy- Give yourself to Permission – Kundalini, Gong and Meditation Classes

Melissa

My intention this week had been to write about the emotion of shame, but events of the last few days completely changed my focus.

Last week at the end of a very intensive weekend of Kundalini Level 1 Teacher Training, I was asked by my dear friend and colleague Annoushka to give myself a break and come away with her to attend a yoga retreat for 2 days at Ulpotha. Not only is Ulpotha one of my favourite places in the world but also one of my favourite teachers Melissa Smith was teaching.

I learnt so much, by giving myself time out, permission to dive into the depth of myself and feel joy. I first had to first process guilt and worry about cancelling a class, but all these emotions melted away as I smelt and heard the rain hitting the dry red earth, listened to the birds at dusk, heard the rustle of the wind in the trees as it picks up tempo before a storm. The sounds of the frogs and insects in our tropical paradise of Sri lanka. The feeling of water on my skin, weirdly hot and cold in the lake in Ulpotha. To the sound of my heart and breath during asana, meditation and relaxation.

All these things reminded me that I was not here on earth just to survive. I was also divinity, a co-creator of my reality. Survival was the old way, governed by our worries and intellect, linked with our fear of existence. With it comes judgment, blame, shame and guilt. When we separate from our innate nature of love and joy, our psyche splits into the polarity of good/bad, right/wrong, a two-dimensional world where life is a burden, a struggle. When we give ourselves permission to work with our heart brain, at a higher mental and physical frequency and do everything in the name of joy, even the boring or difficult things become effortless, effort. We act/do or work towards what we want, use the pause between the effort and surrender to be fully present to the reality of what IS. Then you can surrender yourself to the flow of life and receive the outcome with ease. Fulfillment, contentment and joy reside in the heart brain. Give up your worry of survival, do something inspiring that puts joy in your heart every day, even if it is just a beautiful affirmation, poem, deep breath, kiss, singing, chanting, the feel of the air on your skin, anything that connects you with the joy that always resides in your heart. This will allow you to access the deep well that resides in all of us, that will allow you to relax, trust and know all your dreams will be fulfilled.

With thanks to everyone in my life, to all the lessons I learn daily and the opportunity to experience existence.

Master Yourself in 2017, the year of Radiance

I innately knew and my body was preparing in November for 2017 (2+0+1+7 = 10) a number 10 year, of Mastery or self-illumination.

The tradition of tantric numerology, the kundalini yogic science of numbers was transmitted to Yogi Bhajan by a yogi who had made a life study of this technology. Essentially it is the frequency of the soul as it travels through life’s journey in its various energetic frequencies. I will write a longer blog next week all about Tantric numerology.

The number 10 in this system depicts the subtle energy of the Radiant Body, the Body of Light. It is the light of the soul shining through the transparent ego. A protective radiance which will dissolve attacking projections, at the auric level of your being. The polarity of the Radiant Body is that this circle of protection can become suffocating, oppressive and can prevent you from stepping into your mastery and excellence. Instead of a Master you feel a Fraud. It is time to recognise you are the light and that you can be the change you want to see.

In 2017 we get to really see what we are made of, we either commit to the sacredness of our own divinity, individuality and courage, in celebration and mastery of the illuminated self where the finite No one’s power is magnified by the 0, or the one turns inwards and we fall into loneliness, feeling like an outsider, fearful and isolated.

Having read a lot about 2017, from it being the year of mastering the emotional self, to the new wave of nootropics, a buzz word for biohacking, which is getting the best out of your brain and body, by using drugs and self-stimulants. I feel by going deep and developing a better understanding of yourself, your needs physically and emotionally, through self-care, we will really become the master of ourselves.

1447061955957

On a practical note, stretching into your body everyday no matter what method this is, some form of yoga, swimming, stretch class, etc. Bringing your conscious awareness to your breath, eating, waking, walking, typing, etc. Spending time chanting, singing, listening to your own words, internal and external, will help attune your senses to become more sensitive to YOU, and your needs. This in turn will allow you to understand what food serves and nourishes you. Not what someone else tells you in a magazine or the latest fashion but how do I feel when I eat this? Bloated, windy, heavy, light, fresh nourished? Spend time asking yourself these questions, about everything in your life.

Stop the judgement. This is year is about altitude, seeing the whole picture from above not narrow minded judgement. Decide to discern what suites you best and do not pass judgement on what suites someone else, even if they are your child, grandchild, parent or partner.

This year you need to see or recognise the problem, challenge or block in your life, stop condemning or blaming and know that the problem is there to guide you. Come to a point of stillness and clarity and become the solution to your problem.

If you want more peace, be more peaceful and kind to everyone around you. If you want more prosperity, be more generous without wanting anything in return, even good karma. Be the change you want to see in the world and then you will not need to spend endless time worrying, blaming or condemning all that is in existence at this time. Then, this year will bring you genuine joy and you will be the master of yourself and all you pervade.

Thanks to all my teachers, Sunder Singh, Shiv Charan Singh, Guru Singh and my family the greatest teachers of them all.

Life’s Major Transitions – Kundalini Yoga 6-7.30pm Mon 8 August@ Prana Lounge

cycles

We learnt last week that life lived unconsciously is existing instead of living. A quick recap – We learnt about the 18year cycle of our physical body. 11 year cycle of our mental body and the 7 year cycle of our emotional and spiritual bodies.

The important yogic science of understanding the biorhythms of your life and the clusters they form, equip you to see the map of your life’s influences. Normally we are so absorbed in what is going on in our mind or our problems that we have little time to look at the map of our life, evaluate the lessons learned and prepare for the future. Using the knowledge of our life cycles can give us the pre-sense to change our habits, physical, mental and emotional to slide through these times of great change with less resistance.

An example of a cluster is when the 18 year cycle of your physical body, occurs near the 21 year (3×7) cycle of your emotional body, occurring right next to the 22 years (2×11) cycle of the mental body. Please see the attached Life Cycles Char. This is a transition to adulthood usually celebrated in all cultures. But it can also be a time of great upheaval, for example the end of carefree life student life to transition into the world of work. If at this stage you have not worked on your inner resources through the 7 year and 11 year cycles, you may feel very lost.

FullSizeRender (2)

The Key transitions to understand and master for yourself and your family are:

  • 7-11yrs –      Connection to your spirit and inner self-reliance. Core sense of self.
  • 11-14yrs-      Adolescence and Identity – Character, Values, Risks & Commitments.
  • 18-21-22yrs  Transition to Adulthood – Taking on responsibility, Identity crisis.
  • 33-35-36yrs  Starting to revaluate the self, what you want and what you do not want
  • 42-44/54-55-56yrs       The Midlife Crisis
  • 66-70-72/ 88-90-91     Maturity and Aging, Golden Year. What can you give back, what is your legacy?
  • Death

Practical Application

This week after practicing yoga or meditation or around sunset or sunrise spend some time thinking about the major junctions. Write down the key events that happened during these periods. Can you identify any patterns? What were your dreams as a child? What was your motivation as a child for example; did you see helping others as your only way to self-worth? Or did you need to do something better than your classmate to be acknowledged and loved? Etc.

If you cannot find any patterns make a decision to be especially mindful this week and look for any emotional, mental and physical patterns in your life and see if they relate to your childhood?

Have Dominion so you do not have to Control Life! 6-7.30pm Kundalini Yoga Mon 18 April 2016

DSC04512

When I wake up and do my morning practice especially with a long meditation, I feel really in my centre, relaxed and present. In this state I am ready to face the challenges of the day because most certainly they will be on there way. When we can meet each moment from present awareness instead of a pre-planned expectation of how the world should be, we come into our Dominion. We are not looking to control a situation instead we can come to each moment and each challenge with a curious innocence. This will allow the person or moment to open up the solution to any challenge.

As a human being there is a distinct need for being approved of, this comes from the fact we only survived as being part of a pack. But if we let this need dominate our lives we end up trying to control situations instead of feeling our dominion or at home in any situation.

This need for approval, in human behavioural patterns, is driven by instincts arising from our second chakra. The second chakra is ruled by water and water is a solution. Therefore, one of the main purposes of the second chakra is to find solutions. When your sense is that you are not approved of, your entire second chakra will become disrupted. This is a ‘millions of years old’ instinctual driving force that will dominate your life until you once again experience approval. During this disruption you have a hard time finding answers to your questions . . . a hard time finding solutions to your problems . . . you will also question your solutions to the point of rendering them worthless.

The key is to create a form of self-approval; this is also known as self-realization. In Kundalini yoga we call this being ‘self-sensory’. Your daily practice and being present can bring you back to source. If not you end up is walking around in a state of low self-esteem until you discard this feeling and replace it by blaming others, feeling stressed and trying to control situations.

The Practice

As one can see, this demonstrates the significance and importance of creating a daily practice that provides for self-reflection, a meditative orientation, and ultimately the goal of self-approval. Any form of physical discipline helps in this process and Kundalini yoga is one of the disciplines that can be used. Meditation is also extremely helpful and one of the most introspective forms of meditation is to meditate on the breath. Sit in a comfortable setting and simply become aware that you are breathing and nothing else. After doing this for three minutes reflect on how wonderful it is to be you. Do every day and after a week or two you will begin to experience the sensation of self that is charming and endearing. This is your gift to you— give this gift every day.

Make Your Presence Work

Be present, this has become a buzz word from Kung fu Panda to corporate lingo. But how can you be present? Is it intense concentration or a blank mind? Eckhart Tolle gives the best description about presence.

imagesAPDAVQC3

“When you are present, when your attention is fully and intensely in the Now, Being can be felt, but it can never be understood mentally. ”Eckhart Tolle

For me being present is not a continuous state that you get to, in order to get back to presence, I bring my attention back to my heart and breath. In that moment I can feel the energy of life pulsating through my body and I am aware of existence through my feelings, including discomfort. We have a tendency to allow our mind to drift and then we fall out of presence and into a blue print of how life is. Our brain has evolved over time to recognize patterns and to try and predict what’s going to happen next from those patterns. Our neural pathways search for predictability and security. Our default position could be either negative, positive or neutral. But when we move away from doing a task in a robotic or automatic manner and apply our full awareness our presence to it, it allows us to respond from a place of being fully in the moment, fully present to the solution, where there is only a problem. At other times we are driven to rediscover and get back to presence—usually as a result of an unpleasant circumstance. This sometimes happens when success gives way to depression or boredom; when we experience an inexplicable, gradual drift from the sense of meaning in what we do; when a major transition upsets our life—by change of job, residence, marriage, death, war, or disaster; or when we are pressed by our own natural cycles of maturation to re-evaluate what, how, and why we do things.

During these times try out these exercises:

  • Put aside your expectations and replace them with a neutral anticipation and childlike curiosity
  • Put aside your judgments of good and bad and dwell in gratitude with what is real and now.
  • Put aside beliefs and imprints from others and claim the beliefs that are authentic to your heart, soul, and experience
  • Put aside your doubts and see your talents and gifts—emotionally, physically, mentally, spiritually, and socially.
  • Put aside the constant whir of your life for the stillness and intuitive sensitivity of your consciousness

In this way, the pattern of your life and the direction of your purpose will stand in this present moment and through every moment of your life just as the pull of the current shapes the form of a river.

How to increase your presence?

Give yourself markers during the day, maybe before each meal, you can take 30 seconds to feel present and grateful. First thing in the morning and last thing at night. Make bringing presence into your life your priority every day, this may include doing a daily yoga and meditation practice, being present when exercising, walking or even typing on your computer.

Dissolve your Hidden Self by Increasing your Radiance

dancing_sunset_by_kaamiila-d5jhhrp

The Hidden self diminishes our radiance and connection to our true identity.

Summary of Hidden Self, Agenda and Mask it creates

The Hidden Self and mask is completely separate to the Persona or Shadow Self. Nearly all of us have a Hidden self with a hidden agenda which developed between the ages of 0-7years. The trauma you could have suffered could be as simple as your mother left you in a room while you were asleep. You woke up scared and insecure, crying and the ego decided you never wanted to feel like this again. So you become reactive and start manipulating situations so as to avoid these feelings of insecurity and fear. The child’s agenda if it is not dealt with consciously at a young age becomes the hidden self. Because we are not neutral about ourselves we dismiss the hidden self and its agendas and do not believe the outside world is affected by our private thoughts and feelings.

We react in the same way to all situations, which may not make sense in the current moment. The gap between us and reality increases.   If our habit is to simple react, or to react and deny we reacted we divide and fight ourselves. It is just like trying to see ourselves in a shattered mirror.

Building our Presence and the Authentic Self

When we develop:

  1. Our frontal lobe so that we can use its discriminative ability to filter our thoughts and impulses.
  2. Develop our Intuitive capacity.
  3. Expand our radiance and Aura so we connect our electromagnetic field to the Universal Electromagnetic field.

radiant body 1

There is 2 ways of doing this, you need to work on Shakti and Bhakti.Shakti or strength is created through the daily discipline of kundalini yoga. By balancing the pranas and opening the central channel so that the kundalini energy of consciousness can flow. In many lectures Yogi Bhajan explained to us how we can develop an aura extending to 9 feet in all directions. However self-doubt, inner conflict can diminish the aura to 3-4 feet in a moment. To extend your radiance to connect with the universal magnetic field you need to enter a state of neutrality

Bhakti is the approach of love, surrender and merger. Normally we live in duality and conflict which saps the radiance of our aura. When we bow our head to our divinity and that of everything in the Universe, we open up a diagonal path past the blocks that seem to be in our way.

But our inner agendas dissuade us from this practice of surrender, instead we practice half-heartedly, comfortable and familiar with our own limitations. Our limits begin to define us rather than our radiance liberating us.

Question: How are you going to bring/more Shakti and Bhakti into your life?
