Why do we procrastinate?

Sat nam having just emerged from week 2 KYTT Level 1, I can relate to the topic of procrastination.

When we begin to procrastinate, our washing gets done, we declutter our cupboards, we even iron but other than having a super clean house and clothes, procrastination is a thief of our time and energy.

Our modern hectic, multi tasking life style has provided the perfect environment for the distractions of procrastination. Our lives look busy and productive but mostly we are killing time, not really dealing with the important jobs that just seem too hard to start.

There can be many different types of reasons we procrastinate. Some of us are perfectionist and the perfect excuse (mind my pun) is to procrastinate because things are not just so, not perfect. I want to do it properly or not at all.

Others are the Crisis Junkies who love to leave important things to the last minute so the stress can kick start them into action and then they can have a dramatic story to tell their friends.

There are the Rebel procrastinators, who feel the resistance of starting the important tasks, because there negative mind tells them they do not feel like it and they believe there mind and feelings.

Dreamers can be procrastinators, reading books , day dreaming or getting lost in movies to avoid the important tasks. If they do not think about it maybe it will go away?

Then there is the worrier, who over thinks the task making a mountain out of a molehill before even starting.

Yogi Bhajan tells us to be mindful when we start down the alley of procrastination. Usually we have been hijacked by our negative or positive mind. In one of the Sutra’s of the Age of Aquarius he reminds us, “When the pressure is on, start and the pressure will be off”. He is reminding us to break down our tasks into smaller ones, focusing and doing them one at a time. Making a plan to breakdown and map out the big task into more manageable stages with a timeframe. Write it down and work through it step by step. . This is a good use of your mind, instead of letting your mind sideline you into worry, perfectionism, feeling pressured, dreaming etc.

Tonier Nooyens reminded us on our Level 1 KYTT course, that we can use the energy of Sattva (perfection) or soul to be our touchstone when our mind turns to procrastination. We can discern what thoughts and actions are going to be in line with our soul’s path or not. We can use this to regulate our behaviour, our thoughts and effect our emotions.   The Buddhi mind discerns what is real (in relation to the soul) and what is not real for the soul. So by strengthening the buddi mind & neutral mind we can see when we start procrastinating and correct ourselves. That is why we need a practice to keep us on track. Join me as we work on the mind and strengthen the neutral mind to work and act with us and not resist us.

How Mantra helps us Destress! Kundalini Yoga 6.15, October 1st 6.15pm Prana Lounge.

Last week was a challenging week where I had to bring all my Kundalini Yoga tools and technology to bare to stop my stress personality getting the better of me. Stress is a condition not an illness and you need a certain amount of stress in your life, as I have said many times.  Last week just before Kundalini yoga Level 1 Teacher Training I let stress build up until I ended up with mouth ulcers and feelings of overwhelm. Fortunately during the beautiful training, with its kriya’s, long Sadhana meditations and workshop, I came to the understanding that sometimes you need your emotions stirred up by someone or something so that they can surface to be released. Otherwise they hide unnoticed under your constant protective negative and positive minds not allowing yourself to feel. I noticed my stress triggers like, trying to please, other people’s opinions and the need to control things, wanting things to be perfect. I used a lot of self awareness watching my stress personality to master the stress and feel steady even when faced with criticism and negativity. To be real in these moments, watch the experience and use mantra to uplift, cut and overcome the worse parts. The physical exercises pressurized my glandular system to create neurochemical changes to deal with my stress, I could also feel after long boughts of chanting mantra how this effected my nervous system by stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system to make me feel neutral and relaxed even when things did not go as planned.  As a result our training team was able to respond to the moment, being flexible with the plan we had made. I was inspired by our lead trainer Ronit Vardi, as she tweaked our timetable on a daily and hourly basis to flow with the needs of our students and the reality of time and place.

In fact that is the magic of mantra, the conflicting thoughts and emotions we feel stirred up by, our neutralized when we bring our frequency up to the pure frequency of the Infinite or Universe. Mantra puts our body, mind, etc into the same resonance as the Universe. Mantras calm the disturb thoughts instead to resonate with peace, joy and love.

The mantra chanting I felt really connected me to a different level of consciousness so I could deal with the grueling 14 hour work days, plus evening trainer meetings and prep before bed. Using mantras such as Sat nam or Ong Namo Guru Dev Namo allowed me to access the realm to be in the flow while teaching, to really connect to the teachings and deliver them to the students via knowledge and their electromagnetic fields. Living our daily lives especially in the Age of Aquarius, juggling, work, family, friends and finances can be difficult at the best of times, but when challenges or crisis hits we can feel overwhelmed by pressure which can literally derail us and end up as STRESS.

How we respond consciously or unconsciously to our environment, people and situations all depends on the strength of our nervous system. The nervous system consists of three parts: Central Nervous System (sensation & motor control), Peripheral Nervous System (connects nerves to organs and limbs) and Autonomic Nervous System (emergency response: Sympathetic- “gas pedal” & Parasympathetic- “brake pedal”). Nerve impulses from these 3 different systems communicate with our glands, muscles and organs via electrical and chemical signals to sense and respond, or sense and react.

Some of the benefits to having a strong nervous system are that you can manage stress, respond less automatically and process sensations and emotions so they do not create patterns/habits in our sub and unconscious mind.

Have you ever looked away during a scary movie or if you see something painful? It feels like you cannot bare to watch what is about to happen, anticipating something bad? This is what a weak nervous system is like. A person cannot contain the reality of an event and therefore avoids it altogether. It is as if your container, the nervous system, does not have the depth or inner resources to deal with the painful or difficult events and this governs the limit of the amount of stress or pain that can be withstood. Your nerves get frayed and the thalamus (an area at the back of your brain) filters sensations and decides which thoughts and sensations make it to the conscious mind or which go unnoticed and are pushed into the unconscious mind. These thoughts left unprocessed end up in nervous disorders.

When you develop a strong nervous system, it allowsyouto experience an event no matter how painful. You cannot control what is happening, but you can control whether you allow yourself to experience reality.

A strong nervous system is like a deep well, it gives you the ability to hold whatever situation comes into your life. A strong nervous system can allow you to experience and process painful events faster, as you can ALLOW the experience without avoiding it, process the feelings and not get attached. It can also reflect in your depth in meditation. With a strong nervous system you can meditate for hours without distracting pain. When the nervous system develops the capacity to hold pain, then your mind can bring awareness to it and then release it.

We have become a society that seeks pleasure and avoids pain at all costs. I am not saying that we should seek out pain, but the reality of life is that there are good times and bad times, this is just the polarity of existence. By consciously avoiding the tough times you are running away from reality. We all do it on some level, but the truth is that avoiding pain causes neurosis. It is important to have a strong nervous system to be graceful during tough times.

Practical tips – What does this all mean?

Practice soothing the nervous system, through yoga and meditation. Yoga increases the energy moving through particular nerve pathways. Breath of fire is great for this. This is why sometimes you feel light headed when practicing this breath, because it has moved a block, now energy can flow along that nerve pathway releasing toxins and giving you renewed vitality, which creates that sensation of dizziness.

Yoga also works on stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system, your brake pedal in life, by increasing the parasympathetic response, so you do not get the feeling of being overwhelmed.You can ALLOW yourself to see the thought, or feel the emotion, bring conscious awareness to it and release it.

The neural pathways in people with chronic pain become hypersensitive so they feel pain much faster. Yoga decreases the pain sensation by increasing the amount of information travelling down a shared neural pathway, effectively diluting the pain information. This means you withstand more pain, once again bring conscious awareness to that area and heal it.

Meditation including mantra and eye focus actively stimulates the thalamus and changes how it deals with sensory information, once again allowing us to be in the moment without rejecting it.

Try meditation to “To Stabilize the State.” This meditation works with the armpits which Yogi Bhajan said, if the brain is the engine the armpits are the exhaust. By working the armpits, the connection to our central nervous system, we strengthen the whole nervous system.

Letting Go to Gain Everything

Loosening your grip does not mean you lose, it eventually makes you win because you are invested without attachment to the outcome.   You do the work, take the risk but without expectation. Holding on leaves little room for new creation to blossom as we create energetic boundaries that say, “No I expect this, I want that, No thank you!” The hard part is to act without expectation of gain, to do with intention, pure intention without the need to try and manipulate ensure your expectation is met. This is the real yoga. Because eventually we have to complete all our life lessons and then let go of everything the illusion of our five senses has created, this is called Death. But life without conscious living is no life at all, it is all sweat, toll, and worry without the feelings of limitless liberation in this lifetime.   As the bounds of attachment keep us glued to external validation.

 

The earth element is linked with our attachment. When we practice the one minute breath and master the one minute breath it can really give us a sense of liberation, effortless non attachment, having the experience for itself. I had this experience a few times practicing this breath and it was life altering for me. It left me with a touch stone to go back to when life becomes very heavy, when gravity outweighs gratitude.

Practical Solutions – I found his great practical exercise on www.3ho.org website. It can really help those obsessive thoughts especially related to emotions of anger, outrage and shame. Example: Release of suffering that originates with attachment from the activity of the intellectual mind and reactive emotions.

  1. Old habit: If someone insulted you, your intellectual mind understood it and your body responded to the stress. You used to allow your mind to repeat that incident over and over, stressing your body over and over. Although sometimes repeated with different outcomes, no matter how you ran or re-ran the event in your mind and body, neither were satisfied. Repeated self-induced stress equaled suffering.
  2. New habit: If someone insults you, you recall that the definition of a yogi/yogini is someone who is not attached or reactive to either praise or insult. You then recall the profound sensory experiences that you have created earlier through your practice. Recall your sensory experience of being transported into deep tranquility by meditating on the sacred mantra sounds. Recall your sensory experience of total relaxation. Recall your sensory experience of brilliant healing light radiating from your heart. As you drop your old habit of attachment, your suffering ends. Make Friends with Your Mind

You do not want to stop your heart, lungs, kidneys so why do not want to stop your mind. The common illusion is that meditation stops the mind. What meditation really does is purify the subconscious and unconscious part of the mind so that the conscious mind has greater clarity, focus and can be directed.

Yogi Bhajan describes human being as antennas, constantly broadcasting signals to each other, consciously and unconsciously.   He says, “If a million stations send signals to you, you shall receive them without knowing. That is the unconscious state which the mind has. And then what happens? You get bloated. Overloaded is called bloated. And then your own life starts to fall apart …whatever comes from the mind needs to be worked out.”

What he is telling us is that we need to process the thoughts, emotions and subconscious impressions we are constantly receiving from our mind. If we do not have the habit to do this on a regular basis we become full of mental garbage which dulls our mind. We feel we have no will power, no control over our destiny or destination.

If we do not regularly process what is in the mind Yogi Bhajan reminds us that the subconscious starts to overflow into the conscious. You may have noticed times you just want to talk about everything; this is the subconscious mind flowing into the conscious.

Practical Solutions – How do we Process these signals or thoughts?

My simple understanding of processing a thought or thought sequence is to view it, acknowledge it but let it go. You do not have to analyse it, believe it or be it. Just see what is there, notice and let it flow to the next thought. The kriya we are going to work on this week is really going do some deep cleansing of the subconscious and unconscious mind. This is what you need to do on a regular basis that is why we sit and meditate. We sit and allow the garbage or excess thoughts of the mind to come up and out, we try not to get entangled in them during the meditation but even if this happens it is ok, as when we notice we go back to processing thoughts. Having just been to the movies to watch Pitch Perfect I was inspired by how amazing music, singing and sound can lift you up and start really transforming you. In fact Mick Rock legendary 70’s rock and roll photographer and yogi said, “ You paid whatever you could afford for your mantra…I ‘ve used this mantra ever since. Very easy to use very powerful.” In later life he discovered Kundalini yoga. When asked why Kundalini? He said, “It totally works. It is not bullshit crap. It’s not theoretical. You don’t have to start as a believer or be a follower of Yogi Bhajan to get the benefits. All I really know is the Kundalini kriyas, postures, meditation, chanting and breathing techniques enable me to easily access an altered state in a non chemical way. I just go into the Kundalini space. My brain, my being transforms.”

Practical Guide: So how does Sound & Mantra work

Thoughts and sounds are energetic waves we cannot see but exist. If you project a specific form of energy through the mind, it can have a predictable effect on the physiology of the body and psyche of the brain. This we call mantra. Mantra essentially is a sound wave that you pulse across the brain to create a specific effect within you. It is a bit like a mathematical formula. Each mantra creates a measurable end. It alters the chemistry and pattern of the neurons with both physical and esoteric effects. This has been measured in Harvard and UCLA when they researched how Kritan Kriya (SA,TA,NA,MA) affected DNA and regrowth of telomeres in patients with Alzheimer’s.

Every element of the universe is in a constant state of vibration manifested to us as light, sound and energy. The human sense perceives only a fraction of the infinite range of vibration, so it is difficult to comprehen that the Word mentioned in the bible is actually the totality of vibration which underlies and sustains all creation. A person can tune his or her own consciousness into the awareness of that totality with the use of a mantra. By vibrating in rhythm with the breath to a particular sound that is proportional to the creative sound, or sound current, one can expand one’s sensitivity to the entire spectrum of vibration. It is similar to striking a note on a stringed instrument. In other words, as you vibrate, the universe vibrates with you.” ~Yogi Bhajan

Chanting a mantra either silently or out loud is a method of directing the mind. All of our emotions (sorrow, joy, bitterness, elation) are vibratory frequencies. You can call them beliefs, attitudes, whatever you want, but fundamentally they are vibratory patterns that determine the program played by our mind. So much of what we interact with as “reality” is the program our mind is playing. Our vibratory pattern determines how we feel.

We chant constantly, even if we aren’t aware of it. Chanting can look like “I’m failure, I’m failure, I always fail so why bother trying”. If every other word out of our mouth is “I don’t have enough money for (fill in the blank)” then that, too, is the vibratory pattern we are sending across our minds. When we consciously chant a mantra we are invoking its specific vibratory resonance and placing it into our mind’s field. So if the mantra is for prosperity, peace, happiness, intuition or any multitude of other marvelous things that is the vibratory pattern we are establishing. It doesn’t actually matter if we know the meaning of the mantra; it will still have an effect. The sounds themselves are encoded with meaning and vibratory range. It’s not all about belief. Nor is it placebo. It’s a matter of the universe itself using certain frequencies to manifest things. Mantras were developed by those who could hear and understand the language of the universe. They then blossomed forth these combination of sounds to harness specific vibratory patterns and allow us to mirror them back to the universe in its own language of sound, light and energy.

When chanting it is important to listen to the sound of your own voice, no matter what the pitch or tone. It is not about harmonising. But try to make sure your voice does not dominate either. As the thoughts or emotions arise in meditation, chant strongly and consciously to match the frequency of the thought or emotion. The mantra can then dissolve or replace this pattern with a positive one.

Mantra is also great for people who find meditation difficult. Chanting mantra is a way of staying focused and positively cutting through negative mind loops and patterns. Great to use with Autistic children. Find a mantra that you feel the effect of and use it this year to be the truest, highest version of you. Can your Vibration change your Life? – Kundalini yoga 15 May 6.15pm @ Prana Lounge, Col 7

Last week we used the longitude and latitude of MAN (MIND) TRA (PROJECTION) to first notice then change what we were broadcasting through our words and thoughts both conscious and unconscious. This week we look in more detail about vibration.

Do you feel you are in the flow of life today? Or do you feel like life is blocking you, things are not moving, something just does not feel right? Well there could be a physical and energetic resolution to this problem.

Quantum science tells us that the Universe is a vibration of energy. We are either vibrating in harmony or disharmony with this energy. We vibrate frequently through our thoughts, words, actions, emotions, and feelings. What we vibrate out through our mind and antennas (the hairs on our body) goes out in waves into the Universe and much like a boom-a-rang we receive it back.

When life seems to be continually placing blocks along your path and nothing seems to be moving, it may be showing you that you are not vibrating in harmony with the Universe. To vibrate with the Universe is to vibrate the higher frequencies of love, compassion, and kindness. (See my earlier blog on vibrational frequencies.)

So how do we change our frequency? One of the best ways to be in the flow of the Universe is through yoga, meditation, gong and chanting mantra. The sacred sounds that attune your mind to the pure vibration of the Universe or sound current.

Shift the frequency of your thoughts to be more aligned with the high frequency of the Universe. When you bring in the higher frequency energy into you and your life watch the Universe respond by clearing your path.   Trouble comes only when you ask for it.  Try out the simple Mantra Sat nam, (chanting a long Sat and short nam) and see how you feel after a few minutes of vibrating at a higher frequency.
