The Buddhi Mind and why we Meditate?

We have worked a lot on the mind and in these final weeks before Sri Lankan New Year I wanted to clear up some concepts around meditation, concentration and relaxation. This is what we know so far:

  1. The mind is automatic and there is a lot being thought, processed in the sub, unconscious and conscious mind. But the key thing is that you recognise that YOU are not the one thinking; your MIND is the one thinking. You are the one observing a small portion of the thoughts the mind is having.
  2. The Mind loves contrast so it can create a blueprint for the mind. It likes polarities because they are helpful for classification, good/ bad, right/wrong. Pre established judgements of the world allow the brain to do less work, use less energy and be on a low power mode.
  3. You can affect your mind because it is actually very subtle matter. It can be affected by things like food, breathing, lifestyle, sound and energy.
  4. The point of meditation isn’t to shut it off the mind, it is always working. We meditate to both delete obsolete content that has been stored in the mind and pause in our identification with it.
  5. The only way to gain control of the mind to start serving you, is to use a technique that removes the self reference point, the I.   When we take our attention to the breath, body, mantra, an object etc, this concentration on something beyond the mind is like working a muscle. After the muscle is worked it relaxes more easily. This is the same as your mind, at one point during or after the focused meditation you will start to feel more relaxed and with regular practice start developing the Buddhi mind, which is intuitive, discerning and discriminates what is false and real.

The word meditation has become super trendy, people talk about beer meditation, cooking meditation, all sorts of times when they feel they are in a meditative state.   Feeling relaxed is one of the effects of meditation but it is not the only one. I discussed this with one of the wonderful teachers from the UK who were visiting us, Hari Karam.   Relaxation is essential in life, doing things you love and feeling relaxed but do not confuse it with meditation which is essentially concentration to unload the mind, relax it, make it intuitive and in higher states feel a merger with the Infinite.   This is very different to feeling relaxed after a glass of wine or TV show. The former puts you above thought, while the later puts you below thought.

So in summary we meditate to transcend the waves of the mind and become conscious of our sensory system. It allows us to see what is in our mind, why we are behaving as we do, so we know what is real and not. In higher forms it allows you to know the unknown (intuition) and see the unseen. So you can steer yourself through life, without reaction with GRACE.

Practical Solutions –The easiest way to meditate is through simple, seated breath, or mantra meditation. Just sit comfortably in a quiet place, straighten the spine, relax the body and slow your breath. Focus on your breath or on repeating a mantra. Keep your body still. Your mind will dump out a lot of thoughts from the subconscious, your may experience pain the in body. Watch them, they are not YOU. Just continue to sit still and continue to bring yourself back to your focus. Eventually the thoughts will become still and you will feel surrounded by comfort. Make Friends with Your Mind

You do not want to stop your heart, lungs, kidneys so why do not want to stop your mind. The common illusion is that meditation stops the mind. What meditation really does is purify the subconscious and unconscious part of the mind so that the conscious mind has greater clarity, focus and can be directed.

Yogi Bhajan describes human being as antennas, constantly broadcasting signals to each other, consciously and unconsciously.   He says, “If a million stations send signals to you, you shall receive them without knowing. That is the unconscious state which the mind has. And then what happens? You get bloated. Overloaded is called bloated. And then your own life starts to fall apart …whatever comes from the mind needs to be worked out.”

What he is telling us is that we need to process the thoughts, emotions and subconscious impressions we are constantly receiving from our mind. If we do not have the habit to do this on a regular basis we become full of mental garbage which dulls our mind. We feel we have no will power, no control over our destiny or destination.

If we do not regularly process what is in the mind Yogi Bhajan reminds us that the subconscious starts to overflow into the conscious. You may have noticed times you just want to talk about everything; this is the subconscious mind flowing into the conscious.

Practical Solutions – How do we Process these signals or thoughts?

My simple understanding of processing a thought or thought sequence is to view it, acknowledge it but let it go. You do not have to analyse it, believe it or be it. Just see what is there, notice and let it flow to the next thought. The kriya we are going to work on this week is really going do some deep cleansing of the subconscious and unconscious mind. This is what you need to do on a regular basis that is why we sit and meditate. We sit and allow the garbage or excess thoughts of the mind to come up and out, we try not to get entangled in them during the meditation but even if this happens it is ok, as when we notice we go back to processing thoughts.
