2020 – The Year of the Heart, Love, Compassion, Community and Service

Sat nam yogis and Happy 2020. Wow this year has already started with a bang on the door of our hearts, calling on us to be more tolerant, more compassionate and serviceful to all. Remembering one of the Aquarian sutras, understand through compassion or misunderstand the times.

January is the month to deeply come back to our connection with soul or the deeper truth under the seeming reality of life. Soul does not mean something so far away you cannot connect with it. You can feel it when you are still, in the beat of your heart, feeling the breath in your nose or when you relate to community,friends and loved ones. This is when we go beyond our doubt filled heads and into our heart and soul.

So let’s look forward to 2020. What does Shiv Charan say. His full numerology can be found on his Facebook page, but here is my summary of it.

The year of 4 bring more possibilities, opportunities but also the breakdown of the old false patterns which can leave you feeling insecure and indecisive. See change this year as a release from the old that did not serve you. If the opening in our minds is down towards our lower animal self-there is a danger of falling into the subconscious domain of the negative mind. So it is important to keep moving away from habits that do not serve us.

This is also the year that the neutral mind needs to be in charge. Neutral does not mean that there is no differentiation, it means embracing the now, being aware of the difference but not giving preference or undue attachment to our likes and dislikes. Instead making conscious decisions and whole heartedly committing to that choice.

This year community is going to be vital. Community is seeing the oneness of spirit in all. Make time to focus your intention to get together, sing together, meditate together, eat together, be together.

Finally let’s look at the 2 and 0 in the 2020. The negative mind 2 alone is designed to identify problems and obstacles. But when problems are looked at through the innocence of a child’s eye they represent a challenge in a moment full of opportunity.

We need to direct the flow of emotion (energy in motion) out from the subconscious, instinctive, domain of the negative mind, and move it to the intuitively conscious domain of devotion through the heart.

Negative mind and can be a great moving power. The longing to belong, connects us with our spirit and moves emotion to devotion. Otherwise, it becomes a desperate and needy state through which we descend and drown into the black hole of despair, powerlessness and depression. The double 2 can result in doubling of the duality, a deeper split in the growing polarisation that is increasing in the world and brings a bottomless pit of cold depression, a sense of lack that knows no satisfaction. If these thoughts creep into your mind the best thing is to doubt the doubt. Don’t merely bear the unbearable – transform it through meditation Don’t just accept the unacceptable – transform it through action of service to others.

Say no to the ‘anti’ approach – become for something. Let all your moments be as conscious as possible this year. Have a blessed year.

Longing to Belong & Elementary Stress – Kundalini Yoga 6.15pm Mon 15 Oct 2018

spiritInspired by my trip to Kuala Lumpur and the Radiant Kundalini Yoga Festival I attended last week, I wanted to link two topics together. Elementary stress which is created by not being in touch with your soul and Longing to Belong, which is the emptiness we sometimes feel like loneliness that cannot be filled.

Yogi Bhajan informs us that the only real and deep stressor in life, is that you feel a hole in yourself and your life. You try to fill the gap by having relationships, being busy, buying things, filling our stomachs etc but you still do not feel fulfilled you still feel an emptiness inside. This is because there is an elementary stress within all of us. This elementary stress Yogi Bhajan tells us is because we feel a longing and that longing is to be at one with our infinite selves, with our soul. This is not outside ourselves but deep within. When we honour this relationship with soul or spirit on a daily basis this longing diminishes to a degree, as we are connecting with that which we long for on a regular basis. This then gives us the ability to drop our addictions, not fill our lives up with things, being busy, over eating. This is where our true will power comes from and as we reduce this fundamental stressor in our life, our elementary stress, this connection allows us to not take life so seriously and concentrate on the things we really want instead of the expectations of others and society.

So this week, FEEL the longing of your soul to join back with the infinite. Sit with this feeling in meditation. Do not try to stop this feeling or make it better. This ability to sit with this ache in your heart, your heart burning because of this feeling of separation but not react to it, is our ultimate power. It has the ability to magnetise anything we need to us instead of spending our lives sweating, hassling in order to survive.   Amrit Singh also said that when we lie, even little white lies, it kills our trust in the Universe and it is this trust which helps us have the patience to sit with this longing to belong knowing that all we need will come to us.

Yoga and Happiness

Last week we discussed what limits our happiness but this week we look at what increases it. It is no surprise that the number of people practicing yoga has greatly increased over the past few years. Some put this down to an evolution in consciousness.

But on a practical front why does the practice of yoga makes us feel so good. I have students asking me after class, “What is the point of all this Kundalini Yoga?” As yogis we believe we are infinite spirits residing in a finite body mind. Your infinite possibilities meet with your limited body mind at the border of your awareness or consciousness. Your level of awareness gives you different choices , capacities and therefore possibilities. To break or widen your unconscious limit and horizon you need a technical knowhow. Yoga is this technology knowhow that enables the body mind to expand through, asana, pranayama, mudra, mantra, meditation,etc. to allow you to experience the infinite self.

Kundalini yoga is the owner’s manual for human consciousness. Expand your awareness or consciousness and you have a greater relation to your infinite self. This intern grants you more options in life, greater possibilities. This awareness only develops when you receive practical experience of it from your heart, it cannot just be read or philosophised about.

This wisdom needs to be experienced and practiced on a regular if not daily basis. Your teacher, Guru can show you the techniques but this will not make you feel good unless you have a personal experience of it through your body mind and 5 senses. That is why you need to practice yoga. Not talk about it but actually do it, breath it, feel it in your body so your limited concept of life and yourself dissolve to reveal what your true identity is, your unlimited spirit. That is why we say Sat Nam so much in Kundalini yoga as a constant reminder that I am not this limited body mind but an infinite, eternal, soul here on earth to experience the wave of life. So if you want to thrive not survive, improve your choices, increase your capacity and be happy, keep up a daily practice of yoga. It will raise the horizon between the limits on your life and life’s unlimited possibilities.

Thoughts are a very subtle energy and our mind is the antenna constantly receiving and broadcasting this subtle energy. But what are we broadcasting? When our lives and behaviour become automatic, instinctual without conscious awareness, we are broadcasting our factory setting, default mode, etc. The factory setting of our mind is largely determined by genes and the environment we grew up in. For example what did your carers say about money, security, success, relationships? Do any of these statements sound familiar?

  • Life is hard/ Life is a Burden/ Life is Suffering
  • Money does Not grow on trees
  • People eventually disappoint you.
  • You cannot trust anyone.
  • Better to expect the worse than hope for the best.
  • Money is easy to spend difficult to make.

The predisposition of our mind can show us our automatic programming. This programming is generated from the sub conscious mind, therefore we are not always aware of it. Once we can become aware of this programming we can develop mental flexibility or neuroplasticity, to change that programming through the process of meditation and consciousness. In a meditative state ( if you are confused read last week’s blog) the observer observes the mind and its thought patterns, the observer then elevates the mind to the vastness of the universal Shuniya (stillness).

Practical Solutions

During your meditation notice what is the factory setting of your mind regarding the fundamental issues in your life. It could be, why I am not successful, why I am not prosperous, why I am not trusting, etc. Use acceptance of what is and gratitude to reprogram the default mode, i.e. feeling grateful for the 1 student who attended your class instead of being disappointed. This moves us away from broadcasting a constant message of need, fear and want, to feeling blessed, fulfilled and taken care of. My personal experience of this is that it can really start changing the reality of your life. It is not a miracle and may take time to work but with patience, trust and practice when you see a mental pattern that is not serving you and you want to break the cycle, a gratitude practice will work.
