Digital Detox – Kundalini Yoga 30 November 2020

Digital Detox – Kundalini Yoga

We have been talking about detox over the last fortnight, which basically means that you have accumulated more than you have eliminated resulting in your system being overloaded.

In today’s Age of Aquarius (please look at past blogs) the information age.  We are constantly accumulating information.  Especially from our smartphones, tablets, computers etc.  Taking information in this form firstly stimulates a different part of your brain, than if you read a paper book, newspaper, etc.  This in itself is not a problem, but if you are on your digital device whether it is for work or leisure for 6-10 hours a day, you are absorbing and storing vast amounts of information which really has no way to be processed.  And here in the problem lies, over accumulation leads to a toxic build up.

But as you know the digital world is addictive.  It is easily addictive as food, alcohol, smoking or drugs.  Try to be out of contact with the digital world for ½ day or 1 day and see how you feel.  You may start feeling anxious, worried, upset, maybe someone is urgently trying to contact you?  Also we are not used to being bored, not doing, reading, or watching something, etc.  This was highlighted when I waited in a Doctor’s surgery (Here is Sri Lanka the digital world only surfaced around 5 years ago), everyone was on their phones.  Heads down, shoulders rounded, engrossed.

So the challenge this week, is other than your work, can you make space for at least 3 hours of digital free time per day.  On the weekend have half a day i.e. 6 hours to 12 hours with no interaction with the digital world. Instead, play games, talk to your family, friends, neighbours, do a jigsaw, draw, handwrite a letter, make Christmas cards, read a paper book.  Try it, it will not kill you and maybe you will feel a spark of creativity that you have lost.

In class we will support you with this challenge by doing lots of soothing kriyas for the brain and deep meditative practices to clear out some of the information overload.  Sat nam Fi xx.  www.sanasuma.co.uk

Embrace Boredom – Kundalini Yoga

Embrace Boredom – Kundalini Yoga

We continue on with the journey into our emotions as we move from UPSET to BOREDOM. Never before has the mind had so many choices to circumvent boredom. We have social media, gaming, netflicks all on the go to distract ourselves from the present moment. We are always disengaging from our own reality. We fill our lives. We are constantly busy, our minds filled with our to do lists, worries or wishes. However as soon as we have completed a task and there is a small pause, we are so fearful of boredom that we fill the space with entertainment, food, texting, social media, to sleep etc.

As yogis we know that all emotions are valid. Boredom is natural. You are not a bad yogi if you feel bored during your class, relaxation or meditation. We need to first stop attaching a value judgement to our shadow emotions.

The lock down as a result of Covid 19 made us face global boredom in an unprecedented way. We are scared of boredom because it lies between the water and fire elements. We are worried that if we allow ourselves to feel bored it could spiral down into feelings of upset, sadness or depression (water and earth elements). Or move upwards into irritation, frustration and anger at life (fire elements).

unnamedLL4RVHUH

What is boredom and how can we accept it?

Boredom is just the polarity of achievement or setting of goals. When we achieve our goal we sometimes are not filled with a sense of relief, release but boredom. I have experienced this after an intense period of teacher training and retreats, I can sometimes feel on edge or at a loose end. It is not a comfortable feeling. The tendency is to fill the boredom so you do not experience it. The energy of that task has been spent, we feel in a state of boredom, which the Buddha called balance. It is a state of no movement.

  • At this point you want to sit with it then connect to the infinite stillness, zero or nothing which resides in you.
  • By learning to rest in the present moment and training ourselves not to react to emotional and mental fluctuations, we begin to exist in the space of limitless possibility and creativity. This is when we incubate a new idea, dream or a solution to a problem or situation.
  • By being alert, aware and curious about your boredom may help you gain some valuable insights and sense of purpose.
  • The homework this week is to be bored. Say to yourself bored is bored. Do not look at your device or distract yourself when you are waiting, in traffic, on waking. Shift to a sense of curiosity, patience and readiness to shift energy, be present to this boring feeling of peace.

See you all next week Sat nam x

Workshop on Pranic Healing with Tonie Nooyens
Purifying the Subtle Energies Flows
9am-12.30pm

During this workshop we will focus on the subtle energy “Prana” that flows through us: through our body, our mind and our thoughts. The focus will be sound and mantra to project our thoughts outward and inward, to remove blockages, to purify inner and outer energy, and heal imbalances, taking us into a state of physical and mental balance and well-being, taking away the roots of stress and depression.

How to Play Gong Workshop with Tonie Nooyens
2-4.30pm

A yoga and meditation workshop focusing on the use of sound as part of our yoga and meditation practice. During this workshop we will practice breathing and silent meditation, and we will use mantra as a tool to transform disturbing thought patterns. We will go through a gentle sequence of breathing, yoga and meditation exercises to prepare ourselves for deep healing through the vibration of the gong.

This workshop includes brief explanations on the working of sound, the practice of mantra and on playing the gong.
Silent meditation is effective to get to know yourself, but mantra meditation can break through deep rooted thought patterns…

The sound of the gong creates deep relaxation, releasing us from the torrent of thoughts, removing blocks, reducing tension, and re-arranging our emotional energy and feelings…

Kundalini Yoga – 6.15pm 23 Sept @ Prana Lounge

The Retreat

Kundalini Yoga Teacher Training 2019 has started off as a deeply transformative experience for the students and training team alike.  We learnt through experiential workshops about our breath signatures, how our nervous system has plasticity to change as a result of glial cells, the compassion at of the heart of a kundalini yoga teacher, the Vayu’s in yogic anatomy, the quantum technology of mantra that affects us as a cellular level, etc. during 7 intensive days starting at 5am and ending at 6pm.

The Venue  as usual we started off in Colombo spending our last 3 days at Guava House, enjoying the variety of birds, squirrels, nature and prana which was an uplifting experience.  We ended the last morning on the misty pool deck at Guava House with Sadhana staring at a starlit sky before chanting into the dawn to clear the stories that litter our subconscious and stop us living in the present moment.

Living in Faith not Fear – Kundalini Yoga

Last week we learnt to live in our intuition in the month of June.  To do this we need to be in a state of faith.  In yoga we understand that faith does not have an object, ie I have faith in GOD, guru, my husband, my employees, my family, etc.  Faith is a state of mind either we are in that state of consciousness or we are not.

This is what Guru Singh has to say about faith:

“The heart brain listens to the tones of all voices through the sensitivity of the inner ear. These tones either induce faith, or doubt, in the psyche as time unfolds into moments. Faith can also be induced by the will, as a means of birthing power into a moment. The strength of the will actually arrives from within the muscles of the heart . . . at the core of the heart brain. The fascia of these heart muscles extends — both physically and energetically — up through the throat (doorway to the inner ear) and on up into the tongue. This fascia, is involved — moment to moment — in the shaping of the tongue and produces those tones; overtones, and undertones around the voice. This allows you — through the power of your faith — to imagine the unimaginable; achieve the unexplainable — for it’s all right there, if you allow it to appear. Another trigger for the sensation of faith is that of gratitude, and an interesting fact about such attitudes is that gratitude and concern — faith and fear — will power and the unattainable, cannot occupy the same space at the same time.

You have to make a choice between gratitude and concern; between faith and fear; between will and disbelief, in order to occupy the space of any moment. Combine gratitude, faith and will and you’ve combined some of the most powerful tools to open your higher awareness. With this higher awareness comes the insights that confirm faith; affirm gratitude and set your will into super-action. This produces the frequencies to cure the dangers that might have been reasons for the concern and fear in moments. Setting your will into super-action moves both the physical and psychic energies through your body, from the groin — area of your survival — up into the heart center and your arrival into further faith. The circle and the cycle continues unbroken as the solutions — that are always there . . . are always right on time.”

So we can work on these things through the spiritual, psycho/emotional and physical levels.  This is exactly what happens in a Kundalini yoga kriya.

Synchronize your Brain – Kundalini Yoga Mon 12 Mar 6.15pm @ Prana Lounge

AdobeStock_49489794-1000x675.jpgLast week we processed and unloaded the unconscious and subconscious mind. This week we become whole brain centric as we understand what the functions of the left and right hemispheres are and how we can make them work together to give us neuroplasticity or super brain thinking

When Albert Einstein’s brain was examined after death the only difference they found to a normal brain was the thickening of the tissue that interconnects the right and left brain hemispheres. Giving him a “Super Brain”.

The brain has right and left cerebral hemispheres which are divided by the longitudinal fissure. Both hemispheres have an outer grey matter and a cerebral cortex.  They have individual functions and can also function together. For example:

  • Linear reasoning functions of language such as grammar and word production are often controlled by the left hemisphere of the brain. In contrast, holistic functions of language such as intonation and emphasis are often controlled by the right hemisphere of the brain.
  • The right brain does not distinguish between past, present or future but the left brain cuts reality up to give us the past, present and future.
  • The left hemisphere is the elementary brain which releases memory of movement patterns.
  • The right brain controls your projection and has an independent identity from the left brain.

Practical Solutions

What this shows us is that we need the synchronization of both hemispheres at the same time to give us the ability to live and act with grace in these challenging times Balancing the hemispheres enables you to convert ideas into actions and to function as an integrated whole

530-quotes-150x150

The kriya and meditations we will be practicing this week will help to develop neuroplasticity. The use of mantra with the postures stimulates the central neural cavity in the brain to allow you to hear the inner voice of your soul. This is accomplished through both chemical and electrical adjustments to the brain. The experienced effect is both mental and physical relaxation. Applied Intelligence – Kundalini Yoga 5 Feb 6.15-7.30pm Prana Lounge

The Mind and Applied Intelligence

In January took at look at ourselves, our relationship with the self and how through the use of our own voice and sound we could be our truest, highest self. During the next few weeks I want to take us on a discovery of our minds. I want us to understand the mind, its function, its challenges and discover how to make it our best friend. In order to do this we need to clarify the relationship between ourselves and our mind.

What is intelligence?

We begin with a look at Intelligence. Intelligence is the ability to manifest the thoughts that we identify with and create clear intentions from. Intelligence is not the thoughts themselves, nor just the intellect, nor knowing something. It is the capacity to act on what we know and to evaluate quickly the result of our choices.

What is Applied intelligence?

Is the capacity of the mind to determine the thoughts we dwell on, the intentions we manifest and the actions we take. With applied intelligence you have subjective control to select and direct your thought projections.

wahaHow does it work?

Remember we talked about mantra, man being mind, tra being projection. When you can control your thought projections, you are said to have applied intelligence. This is not easy, but with patience and discipline it can be learnt.  The normal way of thinking is we attach to an idea, feeling, or belief that is just a stream of messages running through our mind as a result of internal and external stimulation. When we do not consciously understand this we let those random thoughts narrow our perception of what is, which slows our ability to learn and adapt to new environments. The key to appropriate development of intelligence is the power of non-attachment.  It is the capacity to select a strategy, from competing factions, that can get you to the goal. It is the higher form of the negative mind In this context, it is your ability to negate false learning and move quickly to a new insight and direction.  This week we will analyse the kinds of thoughts we are constantly having from the elevation and development of our neutral mind and focus on the projection we want have. How to Deal with the Pressure Cooker of Life – Kundalini Yoga 6.15-7.30pm Mon 16 Oct @ Prana Lounge

anti stress yoga

Just as Yogi Bhajan predicted, now more than ever people need to know how to quickly and efficiently deal with the pressures of the times.

Since 2002 when I discovered Kundalini Yoga I have watched the pressures of our technological ages consume more and more of our fading attention span and vitality. The demands we are facing as human beings has exponentially increased with the development in technology. In this pressure cooker inflicting pressure, tension and friction on us something profound is also happening. Mainly a viral need for physical, emotional understanding and wellness on a deeper and deeper level.

Last week I was honoured to take part in a Hatha Yoga Teacher Training(YTT), to introduce the technology of Kundalini yoga, Chakras, Tattvas and the Gong. I was so impressed with the young ladies who are doing the training. For taking the chance to go deep, connect with themselves and their soul.   I joke that everyone now a days is a yoga teacher, but it makes me feel supremely happy as this is another sign of the change of the times. When I trained 15 years ago, my family thought I was nuts to turn in a good job as a lawyer to pursue teaching yoga, now it is common place.

From my experience what I have found is that Kundalini yoga kriyas and meditations are a quick and efficient way to release the stress and pressure of these times, more efficient than a cocktail or a movie. The pressure is not a bad thing. The pressure has made many look deep inside of themselves and ask the hard questions. Just like the girls on the YTT.

12096555_395166917356978_4905646554773778319_n

I feel personally this technology has given me a different perspective on life. A way that does not require me to follow a religion or rely on my teacher to initiate me. You can right here, right now in a very short time be connected to a deeper pulse of your life force which manifests in instant, peace, harmony, mental clarity, neutrality and wellness.

This is not some form of denial and fakism that pretends that there are no up and downs in life, gains and losses. But it does mean that I am training myself to use the now as a guide for joy, wisdom and learning to gain a greater understanding and experience of myself. This I was born to do. Join me all week as we practice kriyas and meditations to help you cope with the pressure and thrive.

Soul Mate – The yogic science of relationships, 11 Sept 2017, 6.15-7.30pm @Prana Lounge

untitledOver the last few weeks we have talked about the mind, the frequency and going beyond the small I, to really connect with ourselves on a level which gives us the bigger picture of life. Let’s apply this to our relationships.

We all are lonely and also have a longing. A longing to form loving, intimate relationships with passionate, deep, connections, at every level in our life.  To understand this we need to examine, where does this longing or need come from? What is the reality or the Maya of these feelings?

The impulse to form relationships comes from our soul or spirit.  The spirit is longing to know itself.  We are not just longing for a relationship with someone else. We know, we can be in a crowded room full of people but still feel alone.  We are longing for a deep connection with ourselves, our soul. The soul is considered a thing, with a weight just less than 1 once. It is the barometer in us that gives us our purpose in life and makes us feel in harmony with existence.    This is why when you practice Kundalini Yoga and meditation you start to get this cosy and fulfilling feeling.  You do not even realise what it is, but you feel it. Just this feeling of deep connection with your heart beat, body and breath makes you feel really good.

The feelings you get when you connect to another person is similar, you are also trying to connect with that person’s soul.  That is why when you have a deep, fulfilling relationship, a merger with another person, you feel so good because once again it is allowing you to experience the infinite in them. It is when you go back to being your personality and they become their personality that there are conflicts again. If you can see yourself and them as soul, you can move beyond your need to fight and be right.

The Practice

This week sit with yourself and start to develop a real and beautiful relationship with yourself, not because of the things you have or the personality you are, just because you can feel your breath moving in and out of your nostrils, your heart beat, the feeling of air touching your skin, etc. Then connect to this subtle life force energy in nature, your partner, friends, family and colleagues.  See through their personalities, outside projections to the heart and soul which resides inside you and them.
