Relieve mental noise and stress

Stress increases mental noise, it is a universal effect. As mental noise increases our mind fills with sensations and thoughts. The mind begins to repeat things, get caught up in the same thought again and again. Feelings and thoughts can also seem unrelated. As I described in class last week, think of your mind as a large pond. When we receive sensory overload whether coming from traffic, loud noises, trying to do too many things at once or from inside our heads the still pond of our mind becomes agitated, when those waves become too fast and strong it can even express itself as mental illness, schizophrenia, OCD, etc, narratives or voices that seem separate from ourselves. These disturbed waves lead to mental fogginess, making mistakes and finally insulation to try and deal with this overload. Our mind creates stories and distortions which we believe are real. We become lost in the detail or lose sight of the whole becoming more impulsive, acting out of fear, trapped in habits becoming a different person or our stress personality.

We try to escape the pain of our sensory overload, by escaping our reality. We watch TV when we should be studying for our exams. We clean out a cupboard when we need to complete our tax form. We seek one great cause of our misery, our relationship, our families, our jobs, etc. We seek one solution to end our pain, if we are just more religious, good, follow a guru, etc we will be saved. Our striving for this one great solution becomes a platform for judging others, we start blaming and isolating ourselves and/or we escape into fantasy, TV, films, etc.

Now we are only using our old reptilian brain, situated at the brain stem to function. The limbic system which gives us compassion and the ability to relate to others stops functioning. We are in survival mode, alive but not living.

Ok that all sounds terrible now what can we do. It is important that we have a daily practice of reducing the internal and external noise vibrating in our mind. Watch those waves and then dive deep into the stillness that exists even if the nosiest of brains. You could use the tools of yoga, pranayama, meditation, kriya, gong, going for a swim, etc. However being mindful (ie watching your thoughts) is not enough. You need to go one step further to move your mind into a neutral meditative state, zero or shuniya, even if it lasts for just for a few seconds. You need this mental silence to help you recalibrate your mind. It is like the reset button on your phone when it is playing up. Guru Singh tells us “When you walk into any room, make it your home. Then help everyone in the room to feel at home. Remember, you are uniquely you and you have every right to be exactly that. Do not try to fit in, you fit perfectly in you.”This is you making everyone else in the room feel at home. It is the very reason why sacred disciplines are essential. Yoga and meditation to reconstruct our random inclinations to follow the crowd instead of having the courage to move towards our dream and goals. Not just your parents and societies.

Practical Solutions

Essentially I think the key to understanding your uniqueness is to take a beautiful journey to learn who you really are. What your dreams are, your talents, your weaknesses, your gifts and your challenges. We are so obsessed about learning about others, the latest movie star, our partners, discovering everything new about our children or new friendships, but how often do we really decide to deeply learn about ourselves? Not in a narcissist way, but in a profound, curious and amazed way?

What is the difference between your external reality (i.e. personality) and the inner you, the spirit within? Because each of us has more than just a personality. Each of us has an energy signature like a thumb print which makes us Unique, one in finity in this incarnation. I just feel special even thinking about it. But we must remember that this applies to all people not just ourselves. So I invite you in the next few weeks, to take time out each day, whether it is through kundalini or yoga meditation practice, reiki, healing, being around the light energy of children, communing with nature in the waves or mountains to become a curious and courageous traveler of your inner journey. To find out more and more about yourself, experience and sense your unique essence or spirit.
