Yogic Hacks & GH Retreat – 11 Feb 2020

More yogic hacks & Guava House Retreat

Last weekend we enjoyed a beautiful retreat at Guava House with some amazing students and all learned a lot from each other.  Here is some of what we learnt:

About the Venue

Shaunagh and Ranjan’s amazing Guava House always serves as an inspiration for our Retreats, surrounded by nature, birds, trees and mountains, we immediately started feeling energised by the pranic energy of the natural world.

About the Retreat

The Retreat went through many topics, including what is yoga and why we need to practice Kundalini yoga in the Age of Aquarius. We learnt to understand your breath signature and how this effects your vitality. We sang mantras, studied our life cycles, went into death and rebirth. Including a fun interactive workshop on yogic anatomy. We learnt that if we changed the dominance of our nostril we can control our emotions. Try it when you next feel commotional.

The second morning we climbed Bible Rock in silence chanting SA, TA, NA, MA and mediated to balance the 3 minds as sun rose. Wow!

About the Food

On this retreat not only did we have the amazing Jayanthi cooking up a veggie rice and curry storm but the teachers pitched in to make it the most delicious vegan fare I have eaten. From the Persian nut roast with vegan gravy to the chia chocolate vegan wattalapan. It was all amazing, scrumptious and filling.

Prana & Beyond Duality – 24 Nov 2019

Pranic Body and Duality – 24 Nov 2019

e456e9853d2fe92816e7f61cce87c479

This week’s inspiration for my classes comes from taking Shaunagh’s class last week on the Pranic Body and reading Nivair Singh’s book on the 8th Body the Pranic Body.

He discusses the integration of charateristics we dislike into our personality. Not an easy or comfortable exercise but something really deep and that will help us to feel whole.

So this week we will go through our family, especially those that are closes to us and make a list of characteristics that you wish to own and disown from each person. This will give you a really good indication of what aspects or characteristics you have integrated and which you have not.

For example let’s say you always care for others, your friends, partner, children and suddenly you do not do something for one of them, they may become angry at you. Underneath the anger is the fear that if they do not get nurtured from you now, they will never get nurtured in the future. This sets up a duality. How to integrate that would be to ask them to nurture themselves. You can still do things for them sometimes but if you do not always nurture them they can rely on themselves so will not get angry.

Try and see what other characteristic you do not like in your close relatives and see if you can integrate them in a way that makes for integration instead of duality?

Grief, emotional blocks? What are you avoiding?- Kundalini Yoga Full Moon Gong Bath 20 January 2019, 6pm Sri Yoga Shala

After having an amazing, delightful start to 2019, I can truly say that last week has been very testing. This week’s blog is really personal because I am trying to teach myself and all of you how to deal with the shadow side of our heart, the area where grief, sadness and deep pain lives. I wrote about how we should start dealing with happiness and sadness as equal in 2019. But it is so easy to write but so difficult to practice that is why we need to keep up, so we can learn to deal with all emotions and not let our emotional body end up ruling us. The tendency is to numb ourselves to avoid pain, but by closing the door to pain, sadness and grief you also close yourself off to real joy.

One of my kittens was run over last week and I have been dealing with his death and my grief. Grief stricken I turned to my practice, I sat on the mat and went through all my emotions, all my mental images and thoughts, I cried and grieved but eventually I smiled. Then I starting reading about techniques and philosophy which could help me through this difficult time.

When pain, grief, sorrow, etc arise and we block them, they cease to be energy in motion and instead become stuck in our bodies, in our psyches, in our mind.

Three things happen as a result of this one we strengthen the pattern in our body/mind that blocks, avoids, or denies emotions, thereby cutting ourselves off from the truth of our emotion. Two, those stuck emotions have to go somewhere, and they affect our body in some way. (Possibly illness in years to come.)

Finally, blocking, avoiding or denying emotion and allowing it to remain in our body affects how we interact with life down the line. We’ll seek to avoid situations that create painful emotions. We begin to avoid life. For example my why have any pets since we will have to go through the pain of their death.

Our physical, mental and meditative practice allows us to start processing these thoughts, emotions and even blocks. Yogi Ji says that if we keep our navel point strong and centered (please read my earlier writing about the nabhi or navel point) we develop a stoic attitude to life. He specifically recommended bow pose and camel pose.

Having done a strong practice for the last week and a kriya which includes these postures, plus a meditation with the seed mantra SA, TA NA MA, I have been able to see my way through grief, to know it is but another experience, that I can take pain without it overwhelming me and swallowing me whole. If you can sit with it, it will pass and there is joy at the end of the tunnel. I promise.
