Kundalini Yoga – 6.15pm 23 Sept @ Prana Lounge

The Retreat

Kundalini Yoga Teacher Training 2019 has started off as a deeply transformative experience for the students and training team alike.  We learnt through experiential workshops about our breath signatures, how our nervous system has plasticity to change as a result of glial cells, the compassion at of the heart of a kundalini yoga teacher, the Vayu’s in yogic anatomy, the quantum technology of mantra that affects us as a cellular level, etc. during 7 intensive days starting at 5am and ending at 6pm.

The Venue  as usual we started off in Colombo spending our last 3 days at Guava House, enjoying the variety of birds, squirrels, nature and prana which was an uplifting experience.  We ended the last morning on the misty pool deck at Guava House with Sadhana staring at a starlit sky before chanting into the dawn to clear the stories that litter our subconscious and stop us living in the present moment.

This week we will work on dealing with clearing our mental stories, whether they are complaints in our mind about our relationships, family, life situation or worries.  Through kriya, conscious living yamas and niyamas we will try to reduce the weight of the world from our shoulders. Sat nam see you this week. Love Fi x www.sanasuma.co.uk  0778011094 raymond.fiona@gmail.com

Living in Faith not Fear – Kundalini Yoga

Last week we learnt to live in our intuition in the month of June.  To do this we need to be in a state of faith.  In yoga we understand that faith does not have an object, ie I have faith in GOD, guru, my husband, my employees, my family, etc.  Faith is a state of mind either we are in that state of consciousness or we are not.

This is what Guru Singh has to say about faith:

“The heart brain listens to the tones of all voices through the sensitivity of the inner ear. These tones either induce faith, or doubt, in the psyche as time unfolds into moments. Faith can also be induced by the will, as a means of birthing power into a moment. The strength of the will actually arrives from within the muscles of the heart . . . at the core of the heart brain. The fascia of these heart muscles extends — both physically and energetically — up through the throat (doorway to the inner ear) and on up into the tongue. This fascia, is involved — moment to moment — in the shaping of the tongue and produces those tones; overtones, and undertones around the voice. This allows you — through the power of your faith — to imagine the unimaginable; achieve the unexplainable — for it’s all right there, if you allow it to appear. Another trigger for the sensation of faith is that of gratitude, and an interesting fact about such attitudes is that gratitude and concern — faith and fear — will power and the unattainable, cannot occupy the same space at the same time.

You have to make a choice between gratitude and concern; between faith and fear; between will and disbelief, in order to occupy the space of any moment. Combine gratitude, faith and will and you’ve combined some of the most powerful tools to open your higher awareness. With this higher awareness comes the insights that confirm faith; affirm gratitude and set your will into super-action. This produces the frequencies to cure the dangers that might have been reasons for the concern and fear in moments. Setting your will into super-action moves both the physical and psychic energies through your body, from the groin — area of your survival — up into the heart center and your arrival into further faith. The circle and the cycle continues unbroken as the solutions — that are always there . . . are always right on time.”

So we can work on these things through the spiritual, psycho/emotional and physical levels.  This is exactly what happens in a Kundalini yoga kriya.

Reactive or Hidden Self – Kundalini yoga 6.15pm Mon 30 July 2018

Reactive Personality ie Hidden Self

Over the last few weeks we have been looking at how we can be truly happy, to feel good about ourselves, be able to cope with difficult feelings and circumstances. But the biggest obstacle to all of this is what Yogi Bhajan named as the Reactive personality or Hidden self.

Firstly we need to understand that we originate from the soul which does not include any polarity, just oneness, which reflects true self. We incarnate into a Universe of polarities, where our persona and shadow self exist. Persona is the part of our personality which we project into the world, how we would like to be seen. The Shadow is the part of the personality which we keep hidden. For example if you are a very kind, generous person there is within you a selfish and mean side. In order not to be at odds with your Shadow you need to acknowledge both sides of the persona but choose to be kind and generous to yourself and others. Understanding that sometimes you need to put yourself first and look after your financial needs. Then there is no conflict between the persona and the shadow.

Within the Shadow lies the Hidden or reactive self. This part of us is created through experiences we had usually in the first 7 years of our life. Just like the little angle baby becomes a monster during the terrible twos, this reactive self does not die with childhood. It stays in the subconscious realm as we get older, holding on to its hidden agenda, undermining our ability to appreciate life, be happy and fulfilled. The reactive self is activated when we do not get what we want. In these circumstances we become angry but it is not just feelings of anger but the reactive mind gets involved, saying, why am I angry, I feel bad about being angry, etc. Adding layer upon layer to this initial feeling from the hidden self.

letting-go-real-life

How to recognise the Reactive or Hidden Self ?

  1. Feelings of regret about the past, past mistakes, etc.
  2. When you begin defending yourself because feelings of shame, loss and fear arise. It prevents us from acknowledging our accountability for what happens to us in life. If it is happening to you, it is happening through you.
  3. We may be busy, our lives filled with many people, tasks and adventures but inside we are not content.
  4. The interconnection between the left and right hemisphere is weakened. The effect is often a change in voice and tone. We are angry, childlike, talkative, full of stories, sneaky and insecure.
  5. Feeling sorry for ourselves, life is unfair, living in our stories.
  6. . Because we are not neutral about ourselves we dismiss the hidden self and its agendas and do not believe the outside world is affected by our private thoughts and feelings. The ego and subconscious mind align with the hidden self. This now reactive personality based on unprocessed childhood trauma, creates thousands of thoughts, feelings and narratives to serve our hidden agenda. We react in the same way to all situations, which may not make sense in the current moment. The gap between us and reality increases.   If our habit is to simple react, or to react and deny we reacted we divide and fight ourselves. It is just like trying to see ourselves in a shattered mirror.

These are just some of the signs of the Reactive personality. When they occur the hidden personality is dominating our normal personality

So how do we deal with it?

Shiv Charan our teacher is very clear about this, he says when you observe the Hidden self, you have got to be very very firm.

  1. There is nothing to heal.
  2. Do not mentally react to it or start to analysis it or discuss it.
  3. Hit it with a Mantra. Mantra is like a tread, a diver’s life line, keep chanting, keep the rhythm and you will get through the waves of it until you come out on the other side.
  4. Have a tool box you can use when the Reactive Self arises, Inhale 4 exhale 1.
  5. For most people we will never be able to get rid of the hidden self reactive personality, only put it to sleep.

Change the Factory Setting of your Mind – Kundalini yoga Mon 9 April 6.15pm Prana Lounge

defaultChange the Factory Setting of your Mind

Thoughts are a very subtle energy and our mind is the antenna constantly receiving and broadcasting this subtle energy. But what are we broadcasting? When our lives and behaviour become automatic, instinctual without conscious awareness, we are broadcasting our factory setting, default mode, etc. The factory setting of our mind is largely determined by genes and the environment we grew up in. For example what did your carers say about money, security, success, relationships? Do any of these statements sound familiar?

  • Life is hard/ Life is a Burden/ Life is Suffering
  • Money does Not grow on trees
  • People eventually disappoint you.
  • You cannot trust anyone.
  • Better to expect the worse than hope for the best.
  • Money is easy to spend difficult to make.

The predisposition of our mind can show us our automatic programming. This programming is generated from the sub conscious mind, therefore we are not always aware of it. Once we can become aware of this programming we can develop mental flexibility or neuroplasticity, to change that programming through the process of meditation and consciousness. In a meditative state ( if you are confused read last week’s blog) the observer observes the mind and its thought patterns, the observer then elevates the mind to the vastness of the universal Shuniya (stillness).

2018-03-27_09-24-49

Practical Solutions

During your meditation notice what is the factory setting of your mind regarding the fundamental issues in your life. It could be, why I am not successful, why I am not prosperous, why I am not trusting, etc. Use acceptance of what is and gratitude to reprogram the default mode, i.e. feeling grateful for the 1 student who attended your class instead of being disappointed. This moves us away from broadcasting a constant message of need, fear and want, to feeling blessed, fulfilled and taken care of. My personal experience of this is that it can really start changing the reality of your life. It is not a miracle and may take time to work but with patience, trust and practice when you see a mental pattern that is not serving you and you want to break the cycle, a gratitude practice will work. Synchronize your Brain – Kundalini Yoga Mon 12 Mar 6.15pm @ Prana Lounge

AdobeStock_49489794-1000x675.jpgLast week we processed and unloaded the unconscious and subconscious mind. This week we become whole brain centric as we understand what the functions of the left and right hemispheres are and how we can make them work together to give us neuroplasticity or super brain thinking

When Albert Einstein’s brain was examined after death the only difference they found to a normal brain was the thickening of the tissue that interconnects the right and left brain hemispheres. Giving him a “Super Brain”.

The brain has right and left cerebral hemispheres which are divided by the longitudinal fissure. Both hemispheres have an outer grey matter and a cerebral cortex.  They have individual functions and can also function together. For example:

  • Linear reasoning functions of language such as grammar and word production are often controlled by the left hemisphere of the brain. In contrast, holistic functions of language such as intonation and emphasis are often controlled by the right hemisphere of the brain.
  • The right brain does not distinguish between past, present or future but the left brain cuts reality up to give us the past, present and future.
  • The left hemisphere is the elementary brain which releases memory of movement patterns.
  • The right brain controls your projection and has an independent identity from the left brain.

Practical Solutions

What this shows us is that we need the synchronization of both hemispheres at the same time to give us the ability to live and act with grace in these challenging times Balancing the hemispheres enables you to convert ideas into actions and to function as an integrated whole

530-quotes-150x150

The kriya and meditations we will be practicing this week will help to develop neuroplasticity. The use of mantra with the postures stimulates the central neural cavity in the brain to allow you to hear the inner voice of your soul. This is accomplished through both chemical and electrical adjustments to the brain. The experienced effect is both mental and physical relaxation. How to Deal with the Pressure Cooker of Life – Kundalini Yoga 6.15-7.30pm Mon 16 Oct @ Prana Lounge

anti stress yoga

Just as Yogi Bhajan predicted, now more than ever people need to know how to quickly and efficiently deal with the pressures of the times.

Since 2002 when I discovered Kundalini Yoga I have watched the pressures of our technological ages consume more and more of our fading attention span and vitality. The demands we are facing as human beings has exponentially increased with the development in technology. In this pressure cooker inflicting pressure, tension and friction on us something profound is also happening. Mainly a viral need for physical, emotional understanding and wellness on a deeper and deeper level.

Last week I was honoured to take part in a Hatha Yoga Teacher Training(YTT), to introduce the technology of Kundalini yoga, Chakras, Tattvas and the Gong. I was so impressed with the young ladies who are doing the training. For taking the chance to go deep, connect with themselves and their soul.   I joke that everyone now a days is a yoga teacher, but it makes me feel supremely happy as this is another sign of the change of the times. When I trained 15 years ago, my family thought I was nuts to turn in a good job as a lawyer to pursue teaching yoga, now it is common place.

From my experience what I have found is that Kundalini yoga kriyas and meditations are a quick and efficient way to release the stress and pressure of these times, more efficient than a cocktail or a movie. The pressure is not a bad thing. The pressure has made many look deep inside of themselves and ask the hard questions. Just like the girls on the YTT.

12096555_395166917356978_4905646554773778319_n

I feel personally this technology has given me a different perspective on life. A way that does not require me to follow a religion or rely on my teacher to initiate me. You can right here, right now in a very short time be connected to a deeper pulse of your life force which manifests in instant, peace, harmony, mental clarity, neutrality and wellness.

This is not some form of denial and fakism that pretends that there are no up and downs in life, gains and losses. But it does mean that I am training myself to use the now as a guide for joy, wisdom and learning to gain a greater understanding and experience of myself. This I was born to do. Join me all week as we practice kriyas and meditations to help you cope with the pressure and thrive.

Take your life off Autopilot- Kundalini Yoga 6.15pm Tuesday 26 Sept @ The Om Space

transitionWe have all experienced reading a few lines or in fact pages in a state of automatic pilot and not being able to recall any of it. This is our body’s clever way of saving fuel. Our conscious brain is a gas guzzling high powered machine when we concentrate, for example like learning a new language. To be more efficient our subconscious brain takes over, it looks at what we are experiencing now and sees if it looks familiar with a previous experience. If it does, it assumes that the experience is the same as yesterday and behaves in the same way. It creates a blue print of your daily life and feeds you this reality again and again. No wonder we feel bored, no wonder small kids say, “I know that Aunty”.

It is estimated that we spend 80% of our life on autopilot or subconscious pilot! This means that majority of life is habituated doing what we regularly do and not seeing the unique context of that moment as a separate time (fourth dimension) in three dimensional space.

Our life is lived in a dull blur. We resist the now and the new.

We need to override this autopilot. Each time you notice you are on autopilot, or the next time you take a drink of water, tea, etc. Take a slow deep breath in through your nose, hold the breath, exhale through the nose, smile and ask yourself, “what is needed now?” Because it is different to what was needed yesterday. Just by doing this you will have taken yourself off autopilot and switched on your high powered intuitive, brain. Enjoy, life is here to be experienced not thought about!

Soul Mate – The yogic science of relationships, 11 Sept 2017, 6.15-7.30pm @Prana Lounge

untitledOver the last few weeks we have talked about the mind, the frequency and going beyond the small I, to really connect with ourselves on a level which gives us the bigger picture of life. Let’s apply this to our relationships.

We all are lonely and also have a longing. A longing to form loving, intimate relationships with passionate, deep, connections, at every level in our life.  To understand this we need to examine, where does this longing or need come from? What is the reality or the Maya of these feelings?

The impulse to form relationships comes from our soul or spirit.  The spirit is longing to know itself.  We are not just longing for a relationship with someone else. We know, we can be in a crowded room full of people but still feel alone.  We are longing for a deep connection with ourselves, our soul. The soul is considered a thing, with a weight just less than 1 once. It is the barometer in us that gives us our purpose in life and makes us feel in harmony with existence.    This is why when you practice Kundalini Yoga and meditation you start to get this cosy and fulfilling feeling.  You do not even realise what it is, but you feel it. Just this feeling of deep connection with your heart beat, body and breath makes you feel really good.

The feelings you get when you connect to another person is similar, you are also trying to connect with that person’s soul.  That is why when you have a deep, fulfilling relationship, a merger with another person, you feel so good because once again it is allowing you to experience the infinite in them. It is when you go back to being your personality and they become their personality that there are conflicts again. If you can see yourself and them as soul, you can move beyond your need to fight and be right.

The Practice

This week sit with yourself and start to develop a real and beautiful relationship with yourself, not because of the things you have or the personality you are, just because you can feel your breath moving in and out of your nostrils, your heart beat, the feeling of air touching your skin, etc. Then connect to this subtle life force energy in nature, your partner, friends, family and colleagues.  See through their personalities, outside projections to the heart and soul which resides inside you and them.

Kundalini Yoga Teacher Training Level 1 Café Ceylon, Sri Lanka

About the Venue?

Café Ceylon and Jasmin cottage are our beautiful beach cottage and wild sea food restaurant by Kabalana Beach. Jasmin cottage is homely, cosy and colourful. Beds are covered with Indian kanta work, brightly coloured bedspreads and lots of art adorn the walls. Café Ceylon has a huge, tropical garden full of ancient coconut palms, organic papaya, passion, bananas and flowers. We slept between the 2 cottages, had our classes looking out on to the luscious garden and ate special veggie food cooked by my master chef husband German Dimaano. After an intense day of classes, we went off to Kabalana beach and got thrown about in the dramatic waves. Some of us went body boarding but it was an intense experience for all as we faced our fears and did it anyway. The star lit night was filled with the sweet sound of singing and playing of spiritual mantras, before an early night for a 5am start.

About the Retreat?

We began the final week of Kundalini Yoga Teacher Training Level 1 with our joyful teacher Ronit Vardi who flew to us from Israel just for this course. It was a 7 day intensive. With 5am starts for morning Sadhana, then full 13-14 hour days, filled with teachings that included, the science of Chakras, humanology, the relationship and differences between male and females, Yogic diet, ethics, spiritual path and development, western anatomy, etc. All the student teachers got to a chance to teach in front of their peers, handling the Kriya’s, presentations and teaching asana, pranayama and meditation. The final day ended with a beautiful ceremony where we shared our thoughts for the future and how transformational the course had been for everyone including the teachers.

About the Food?

German is a brilliant chef, he was artistically creative with our food as well as it being delicious. We started the day with homemade muesli, fresh seasonal fruits and buffalo yoghurt or curd.   Lunch was roast veggie quinoa salad with hummus, roast pumpkin risotto with shavings of parmesan, etc. Dinner was a light, healthy veggie soup and coconut roti.

The Science of Chakra’s – Kundalini Yoga 29 May 6.15pm@ Prana Lounge

Kundlaini_Meditaiton

When the yogis discovered the sound, workings, co relationship of the Chakra system, they developed it into a whole science. This total science gave birth to Kundalini yoga. What for me was the OMG moment when rediscovering the Chakra system was that by knowing the workings of each chakra you can better understand where and why you are off balance.

We discussed last week how the human body was like a musical instrument constructed of strings or surs, which vibrate with the flow of pranic energy. Out of these 72,000 strings there are 3 major surs that control the rest. Pranic energy flows like a waterfall from the crown downwards collecting in seven energy pools at the chakras.

The upper chakras vibrate with each thought of the mind. They carry this vibration down to the lower chakras which create the shape of the physical, emotional and mental bodies.

First Chakra, Muladara, is located at the base of the spine, perineum and rectum. It deals with security, grounding and the instinct to survive. It also works on eliminating anything you no longer need, food waste, unneeded emotions, thoughts, etc. From complex to basic or common elements. It is linked to your sense of smell because if you hold on to everything you end up reeking or eliminating well allows you to have a sweet smell. Habit is a big part of this chakra you develop conscious habits which finally can be done unconsciously. Trust is the key to balancing this chakra, trust in the earth, yourself and the unseen. This is a key problem in the modern world. When in doubt in your first chakra, secure yourself and hold to the old patterns.

Second Chakra, Svadhisthana is located in the sacrum, kidneys, ovaries and testis. It deals with creativity, reproduction and relationships. It also embodies duality and polarity as 1 becomes 2. It is the first taste of merger. The element water is associated with it and like water, feelings flow or get damned up. Research shows that our memories are categorised as much by feeling as anything else. When this chakra is unbalanced you may develop shallow relationships, shame of the body and sexuality, inadequacy or wild child behaviour. We use Sat Kriya, and frog pose not to stimulate and increase the energy of this chakra but to balance it. When balanced you can have fulfilling intimate relationships, a passion for life, generosity and willingness to share. The sense is touch and the colour orange. When in doubt in your second chakra find your feelings and follow your passion.

Third Chakra, Manipura is located at the navel, solar plexus, and upper digestive system. This is the area of our strength, will power, sense of control and coordination. It is ruled by the element fire and coordinates sight and vision. Fire can also make you an angry fiery person if not directed correctly into determination. It is at the navel that energy is gathered and distributed, this is why the first thing during the wake-up routine is stretch pose with breath of fire. When in doubt in your third chakra, act. This is the realm of the spiritual warrior, you know where you want to get to and can gather the energy needed to get there, fearlessly. When you feel insufficiency energy you may compensate with reaching for energy in from of carbohydrate or sweet foods, drugs and stimulants.

Fourth Chakra, Anahata is located at the sternum, thymus gland and heart. This is your centre of compassion, empathy, joy, grief, bitterness, attachment, loneliness, passive aggressive. It gives us the sense of touch, that is why we say when someone speaks from the heart, it touches us. Air is the element associated with this Chakra. Expression of the air element when unbalanced, will manifest as giving to those who do not want or need it. The heart is stimulated by Prana, any blocks of the diaphragm deeply effect the heart chakra. So, it is recommended to do Pranayama daily to increase the flow at this heart centre.

Fifth Chakra, Vishuddha is located at the throat, thyroid and parathyroid glands. The centre of communication and sound. If this chakra is unbalanced you can feel frustrated, not be able to express yourself, feelings of shyness, withdrawal into the mind.   Balanced you are an inspirational communicator and you will be listened to as an authority. You can create through your words and hear the subtle of what has not been said.

Sixth Chakra, Anja is located in the third eye area, pituitary gland, above the root of the nose. I perceive and I see. It is all about your intuitive mind, when out of balance you suffer from nightmares, eye problems, confusion discerning what is real, being unfocussed and psychic disturbances. When balanced, you are clear, you can connect to and rely on your intuition and are comfortable with what is, reality.

Seven Chakra, Sahasrara is located at the crown of the head and pineal gland. I know, I accept. The element related to this chakra is thought and the divine. When this chakra is unbalanced you can be close minded, doubtful, feel despairing, suffer from symptoms without cause and be self-conscious.  Balanced you can feel bliss, experience oneness (samadhi), joy, peace and wholeness as all the other chakras become integrated and connected to the seventh.

Eight Chakra, the Aura is located as the radiance of the electromagnetic field around you. The aura combines the effects of all the other chakra’s, giving you protection and projection. If the aura is balanced it appears as an oval light, symmetrical. When you are ill, it has various dimples and pockets where your radiance is dimmed. The Aura connects your inner and outer realities. It connects you to the entire Universe. When your Aura is weak you catch illness and absorb negativity energy. When strong it aligns all your chakras and your presence alone seems to work to fulfil your desire and needs.

Understand yourself through the chakra system, work out what is weak on a daily basis and take action to balance this area in your life and uplift yourself.
