Elevate your Polarities to Live with Grace – Kundalini Yoga 6, Nov 6.15pm @ Prana Lounge

Wow, having just spent 10days together with amazing teachers Tonie Nooyens and Tien at Guava House participating at a Level 2 Authentic Relationship Retreat, I was amazed at facing the polarities and paradoxes of life immediately. I was left energised by dead tired at the same time.

This is a complicated topic so I am going to take 2 weeks in blogging about this one so stay with me!

Let’s look at definitions first. A polarity is an opposite that cannot exist without the other. We live in a world full of polarities like night and day, black and white, good and bad. In fact one of the reasons the world is in such conflict inside ourselves and out, is because we do not understand or handle our polarities.

We get narrow minded and feel that we can only have one view; we either have to Hate Trump or love him. We either have to eat, a clean, green, vegan diet to be a good person or eat junk food. There is no longer a middle ground we feel we can comfortable to occupy. These polarised views are damaging us.

The first mistake is to try and fight the polarity. If we destroy one side the other side will cease to exist. Every Wiseman is sometimes a fool. From the mouths of fools the greatest wisdom flows. In fact by focusing solely on one side of the picture, the balance shifts to give you more of what you do not want. For example when you are trying not to think of a scary thought, it increases your fear not decreases it. The second mistake is to take the average between the 2 polarities. For example look at a coalition government, most of the time they end up being totally ineffective as they end up compromising so much that neither do they get anything done or do they please the electorate or their respective parties.

We need to elevate the polarities and paradoxes in our personalities and outside ourselves on a diagonal path to become masters of ourselves. This is not another facade where we reduce the tensions between our conflicts and challenges by pretending everything is perfect, for example when a spiritualised person avoids inner conflict by saying, “What conflict, everything is ONE and heavenly”! This is a position that isolates, insulates, separates and denies reality. Where there is peace there is conflict, where there is heaven there is hell.

This week we will look at each polarity and see the lessons they can create for us in life and why they exist? Look at this quote and try and see the elevated or diagonal energy it gives to a polarity.

“When you deny something, actually you are accepting those things very deep in your subconscious mind, and sometimes when you accept something you are rejecting it in your subconscious mind so strongly even though you do not know it. So it is not by your acts alone that you approve or disapprove things. Your personality, which is a known personality can be known by acts, but your unknown personality is also there. Man is both unknown and known. Unknown is divine. Known is individual, however you are denying God. God is only denied because you say it is unknown. To know thyself is to know God. God is what? God is the totality, and when one knows the totality of one’s personality, one is GOD.” Teachings of Yogi Bhajan.

See you if you can understand why a polarity exists in your life. Next week we look more closely at paradox.

Appreciate Yourself – Kundalini Yoga 6.15-7.30pm Mon 2 Oct 2017@Prana Lounge, Colombo 7

security

We often feel unappreciated. We do all these things for other people, but it feels like a thankless waste as no one’s acknowledges us. We expect something from the things we do, achieve, etc. But nobody acknowledges us? Well guess what the most important thing is to feel self appreciation for all you do. In my kids class when a child says, “Aunty, aunty look at me!”, I reply, “That is great but how do you feel? You do not need me to like what you are doing, you need to feel good about what you are doing.”

This is what Yogi Bhajan says about appreciation, “If you appreciate your life, if you appreciate your job, if you appreciate yourself, if you appreciate your surroundings—poor or rich, whatever they are—you are divine. The principle is that you are divine when you appreciate whatever you are. You must appreciate your job, no matter how dirty it is. You must appreciate your misery, no matter how painful it is. The moment you start appreciating misery it will run away. You don’t have to do anything. That’s why you all suffer. Misery doesn’t need appreciation. Misery needs to give you pain. The purpose of misery is to put you through pain. As soon as you start appreciating misery, its purpose is lost. How is misery going to be there?” The Universal consciousness is around and within us, if we can feel appreciation.

Last week I understood this concept. When I was going through a feeling of being really stuck, annoyed, off centre, frustrated, just for a moment I was able to break through and ask myself ok, there must be a lesson in this? Guru Singh’s punch line is, there so much fresh shit around, if I dig deep enough I will find the pony.

How are you going to tap into appreciation when your day falls apart when you are at your worst?

Practical Tips

Move away from the object of frustration, take a deep breath, go and have a shower or drink a cold class of water, or if you have time go for a swim, change the electromagnetic field of negativity around you. Refresh and reboot yourself. Say to yourself even though this is not going well, I appreciate myself and the situation. I will learn the lesson that comes out of this situation, even if I do not understand why this is happening. Do not try to engage your brain, it will only say that life is no fare, there is no justice and why it is happening to me? Drop your expectations of the situation and appreciate what is at the present moment.

Make all your Relationships Authentic – 18 Sept 6.15-7.30pm Kundalini Yoga @ Prana Lounge, Colombo 7

We now know that our real soul mate is when we connect deeply with our spirit. Once we can feel our spirit, we can then start to bring that clear, real relationship we have with our self into relating with others.

IMG_4350

The problem is that our relationships with our friends, partners, colleagues, students, etc. are always in a state of change. They are very complex. We need to keep a clear relationship with ourselves so we can extend that out through our electromagnetic field when we deal with others.  This is called having an authentic relationship.  Relationships even ones filled with conflict we deal with through integrity, kindness, intuitive intelligence  and neutrally.  You always express love, your authenticity  and your soul,  as opposed to your projected fears and defences that are provoked during challenging circumstances.

authentic_relationships

Now think of a time in your life when you felt the most authentic and your core self? What do you look, sound and feel like? With whom do you feel you can be yourself without feeling judged? How do you recognise an authentic relationship verses an inauthentic one where you have something to gain from displaying particular behaviour.

Yogi bhajan says, “ Relationship is nothing but a totally extended experience of self”.

For me being authentic is saying what I mean and following through with my words.  I have had to start being more careful with how I relate to people through my speech. Not just saying empty words to fill the time , or making empty promises to please people. I strive to hold the relationship with myself  consciously, not to let myself down or anyone else down. To face relationships evening challenging ones with  love first over projected fears and defences that are provoked by circumstances and act neutrally, from my soul.

The Practice

One Minute Breath: Tune in with Ong Namo, Guru Dev Namo 3-5x. Sit with a straight spine. Inhale deeply for 20 seconds, hold for 20 seconds, exhale for 20 seconds. You may start with 10 seconds and build up.  Even if you do this for 3 mins it can really get you back in touch with the true, authentic self.

The Anatomy of Depression – Kundalini Yoga and Meditation Tues 11 April 6-7pm@ The Om Space, Col 5

mindfulnessHaving completed 5 days of a deep, detox and spending time rejuvenating myself from within. This week we will focus on opening up to life especially through the breath and understanding the anatomy of depression or negative feelings.

Yogi Bhanjan says that depression is a symptom of shallow breathing and locked pelvic area. He says that people are mistaken in thinking depression and negativity are a result of mood or circumstance. He encourages people to do a heavy breath from the navel point to move negativity or depression very fast.

Practical Tip

Try lots of deep breathing starting from the pelvic floor and breath of fire this week, to counter any negativity in your thoughts and emotions. Start with 3mins daily, but if possible extend this up to 31 mins.

Sadhana – Invest in your Wellbeing

kundalini-yoga-sadhana-flickr-sharing-218170There is no gain without effort, therefore creating the habit of Sadhana (spiritual disciplined practice) in your life is a worthy investment in your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing.

Sadhana can be defined as, whatever you do consistently to awaken your consciousness so that you can relate your higher self. To cover all aspects, it will include some form of yoga or exercise and meditation. You can do it on your own or in the group. The best time to practice is in the Amrit Vela which is 2 hours before sunrise or sunset 4-7am or 4-7pm daily.

When I thought about writing about Sadhana, I wanted to give you an idea of what my motivation is to do a daily spiritual practice as well as group Sadhana.

On many fronts, I would say that before I began practicing Kundalini Yoga and doing a daily practice, I found it very hard to motivate myself, especially when it came to physical exercise and meditation. I am one of those soft people, who loves comfort, cosiness and really lazing around. I had not really nurtured discipline in my life, especially the physical or emotional sort. I was very self-absorbed and believed my internal mental dialog. I had quite a shock when I realised that I was indeed not my mind or emotions and that the clarity of the real me, was buried deep down under a ton of pre-conceived ideas most of which were not even my own.

Sadhana began as a chore for me. I got bored by my practice, used it to daydream about other things but keep on just doing it. Very slowly it started to work, very subtly without even my conscious knowledge.

When you start a consistent Sadhana practice be prepared for many subconscious blocks to challenge you and prevent you from keeping up a daily practice. Whether it be, not being able to sleep the night before, feeling sick, running late, family problems or just your alarm not going off. But as you build up your will power to overcome your mental and physical excuses it becomes easier to become more committed to yourself. Your mind becomes clearer as subconscious fears and unhealthy patterns that normally hold you in their grip are released. Doubt is released and your mind becomes sure. You become clear and start feeling more joy, being able to deal neutrally with fears and anxieties as they arise, as you have started the day by tuning your body, mind instrument to start reflecting that inner radiance in you.

This is my motivation for doing a daily and group Sadhana, I feel the benefits of having greater mental clarity to see what is real and what is just an illusion created by my mind. I am able to see my emotional patterns especially the unhealthy ones. This manifests in my new-found ability not to automatically speak my mind, which may create drama or karma, instead watch my mind and not react to its internal dialog.

I know I have a long way to go but by keeping up almost an uninterrupted practice for the last 14 years, I really see the benefits in my life. So, my challenge to you is, try it, keep going for 1 year and if you see no benefits stop. If you do feel better continue. Keep your motivation in mind when you feel tired, or angry you have to do your practice last thing at night. Remember sadhana clears the subconscious shadows, the automatic patterns of behaviour that make you feel bad or guilty after reacting to a situation. Try coming to a group Sadhana, I lead one once a week every Wed 5-7.30am 9 Greenlands Lane, Col 5, just sms to confirm you are coming or attend the first Saturday of the month at The Om Space.
