Retreat, Yogic Lifestyle – 11-13 Oct 2019 Pidurangala Kundalini Yoga Retreat

IMG_0392

I encourage all yogis to start working on the Yamas Niyamas we looked at last week please see the form below.  Those who started please pick a different Yama and Niyama this week to work on.

So why as yogis do we learn about yogic life style, ie Yamas, Niyamas? Is it to make everyone the same. like a cult?  The answer is NO.  We do not want yogis to live in such a restricted way that we cannot express our creative individuality but we do want you to start developing self-discipline and change your life style to promote a healthy mind and body because without the support of our lifestyle, life becomes uphill battle.

I was asked the question this week why is it when I eat unhealthily, do little yogic or exercise do I feel dull, lifeless, tired and down on myself.  Answer: It is because you are increasing the Tamas Guna in your body (look back at the blog on the Gunas) which creates the slowing down, heavy, dull feeling in the mind and body.

Oct 2019 retreat Pidurangula 1

This is why we encourage you all to come on a Retreat.  We love teaching them also.  But for a few days or weeks we live a Sattvic lifestyle.  What does that mean? Well we eat healthy locally grown foods, freshly cooked to balance and compliment the Kundalini Yoga program during the day.  We spend plenty of time in nature, silence to soak in the pranic energy as well as soaking in peace.  We do kundalini yoga, walking and breathing practice to get you back in touch with your body, to feel the lightness of being.  We use early morning meditation, star gazing and gong to lighten your vibration so you leave the Retreat feeling radiant and more able to cope with the stresses and strains of life.

Isaac Newton 3rd Universal Law – Kundalini Yoga 6.15-7.15pm Nov 21st

When I first discovered Kundalini Yoga in Quito, Ecuador around April 2002, I fell in love! Not consciously but unconsciously. Something felt familiar and wonderful about this bizarre practice which was nothing like any other type of yoga I had practiced before. But it also made me start feeling, all feelings not just good ones. Suddenly I became aware of the underlying anxiety I felt, this anxious feeling I still get that I am not good enough, do not work hard enough are inherently lazy… etc. I had left a highly pressured, stressful dream job as a human rights lawyer working under the most talented, fearless female lawyer Louise Christian to suddenly become a housewife in a strange country where I could not even speak the language, it was perfect. I had stepped out a comfort zone into a completely new world just to realise that all my anxiety was not created by my work but by my untrained brain.

During my 2 wonderful years in Ecuador my heart opened, soul soared like a Condor, but sometimes I felt I was making no progress at all, 3 steps forward, 2 steps back. I was still me, I still got angry, sad, worried etc. I thought yoga would make all that go away and I would live in a blissful bubble a bit like the fantasy books I read. But once this expectation for a perfect life and perfect new Fiona faded the real beauty of life with all its up and down started to be experienced.

I have also become conscious over the years that misery can also be comforting. We do not realise that when we are sick or worried and we tell our loved ones, we get sympathy. We are addicted to this sympathy because it makes us feel understood, valued, loved as oppose to being strong and always great, then we are looked up to for guidance, we must be the light and this scares us. We are more scared of our greatness than our weakness. Close your eyes an image you without any of your imaged disabilities, may they be physical back pain or emotional pain. What would that all powerful you look like, how would you deal with problems, if you feel you can always find the solutions?

Isaac Newton’s third Universal law states, “For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.” Remember this in your needy, anxiety, feeling low or down moment. We can start to know intellectually and feel consciously that if I am sick in this moment there also exists the opposite which is healing. I just have to redirect my energy and thoughts from the concentration on sickness to habits and thoughts about healing. Now is not the time for why has this happened to me? I had an important day and needed to finish my list. Now is a time for surrender and redirection, super consciousness.

530-quotes-150x150

Einstein said “Imagination today is reality tomorrow”. So let’s not get caught up in the general malaise of Brexit, Trumps victory, the state of the Environment, or why is the world going to hell? Let’s focus those strong emotions of angry, rage and redirect them into being more determined to do a physical practice every day, start learning something new, start to meditate or increase our meditation practice, kick the inner lazy voice and wake up 10 mins early to feel grateful for the day, grateful for our breath and do something to increase our immune system (3mins breath of fire – obviously not on your moon cycle) as well as being kinder to all around us.

Once you feel the path going backwards, do not continue to let despondency occupy your mental space with its repetitive story either in your head or as you repeat it to get sympathy from you friends. For this will occupy the space needed to find the solution the healing in any situation. Become the change you want to see and by your actions not your words others including family members will start following your lead. Because at this time we do not need someone to tell us what to do, we need to be shown by example what the lightness of being looks like. Then the third law of equal and opposites will take over and tip the balance away from tragedies to levity.

Death and Enlightenment

Death is the death of our physical body and five senses not of our soul. The soul moves either on to its next incarnation or to join with the infinite. Yogi Bhajan joked that it did not matter if you believed in reincarnation or not it happened despite one’s belief.

One of the reasons we practice yoga is as a preparation for the moment of death.  That in the instance that our final breath expires, the soul is confronted with all you have done throughout your life and you must choose to forgive yourself at this moment otherwise attachment to shame, guilt, or pride can bring you back to the incarnations of life. We must make the conscious choice to move on into oneness or continue with the world as we have known it.  Yogi Bhajan referred to this time as “choosing the cold path”.  He said the soul would confront two roads, one cold and unfamiliar, one warm and cozy.  The cold path would lead the soul onwards and the warm familiar path would lead one back into the womb for rebirth.  To escape the wheel of karma is the goal of each soul, and so the moment of death is incredibly important, as that is when the choice is made. The discipline of sadhana, cold showers, waking up before the dawn and keeping up in meditation. These practices train the mind to follow choice and intention rather than laziness and habit.  We are literally training ourselves to take the difficult cold path but ultimately more rewarding road to enlightenment.

In the moment of death, mantra can help a soul move into the blue ethers and escape the electromagnetic field of the earth.  The difference between dying with a swear word on your lips and dying with “Waheguru” can make all the difference. There are many stories from India of parables about this.  One story that I love is that a very bad man, a thief and liar was killed by a man named Ram.  In surprise, he exclaimed “Ram!”  (a name of God in addition to the man’s name) and was surprised to find himself elevated in a more powerful incarnation, such was the power of the vibration of the name.

Whether you believe the parables or not, Yogi Bhajan gave a mantra called the “Pran Sutra” which literally means the “Teaching of Life Force” and gives us a tool to use at the moment of death to train and focus the mind onto a higher vibration.

The Pran Sutra mantra is “Nanak too(n) lehanaa too(n) hai Guru amar too(n) veechaariaa Dhan Ram Das Gur Jin sireeaa tinia savariaa.  This mantra brings you through the energy of the first four Sikh gurus, ending at Guru Ram Das, Lord of Miracles and the Guru associated with the heart chakra.  It focuses the consciousness of the reciter onto the energy of the heart, the energy of miracles, and entreats divine assistance with the passage of life.

The Pran Sutra is a tool given by Yogi Bhajan to prepare our soul to take the right steps in the moment after we pass.  It is a beautiful gift that we can give to ourselves and a wonderful teaching to include in our life as well as our death.
